On the other hand, the poll found that among people who don't have pets, Obama leads McCain 48 percent to 34 percent.

But that still leaves McCain looking strong, since the majority of homes have a pet.

While he doesn't currently have a pet, Obama has reportedly promised his daughters a dog once the campaign is over.

In a spirit of helpfulness, the American Kennel Club is collecting opinions as to what kind of dog Obama should get.

So the AKC has narrowed the choices down to five breeds and is asking the public to vote at www.presidentialpup.com with voting to continue until mid-August.

It looks like a modern take on the horse-drawn carriage, but this unusual hybrid vehicle is actually a sophisticated piece of racehorse training equipment.

The vehicle can travel at quite a gallop and is designed to monitor animals at speeds of up to 38mph.

The four tonne trainer was built by Rousch Technologies for Turkish-based Kurt Systems. It is powered by a Volvo diesel engine and has a hydraulically controlled silicone saddle to simulate different jockey weights as well as electronically controlled reins.

This unusual vehicle is a piece of racehorse training equipment

'The trainer will be able to meet the increasingly sophisticated demands of the race industry worldwide,' a Kurt Systems spokesman said.

He added that the trainer would now go into serial production.

The vehicle can carry a driver, vet and trainer in the back cabin

According to the 2006 United Nations report Livestock’s Long Shadow, activities associated with meat production such as deforestation and fuel-intensive farming, are responsible for over 18% of human-made greenhouse gas emissions. These livestock-related gases account for 9% of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions, 35-40% of total methane (chiefly due to animals’ intestinal fermentation and manure) and 64% of total nitrous-oxide (chiefly due to fertilizer use).

Forgoing meat has implications on even an individual level. For each person who eats an animal-free vegetarian diet, only 1/6 acre of agricultural land is required.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK - In a spot severely burned by the 1988 North Fork fire, a National Park Service interpretive sign notes that the area surrounding the boardwalk may be a meadow for decades. Instead, spring-green lodgepole pine trees up to 15 feet high have taken root across the hillside.

“There's just a lot of myth around the fires that's taken for truth,” said Don Despain, 67, a retired fire ecologist who worked in the park in 1988. “All of (the theories) have been proved wrong. By 1988, I knew that those were not true. The '81, '79 and '76 fires were just as hot as 1988.”

“Fire in a forest that's dependent on fire, it's not destructive, it's recycling itself,” said Bob Barbee, Yellowstone superintendent in 1988. “It's a fact of life, like rain and sunshine.”

“People wanted Bambi stories, but the animals generally moved to large, open fields and were seemingly unconcerned,”
