The parents of a seven-year-old boy who broke into an Australian outback zoo and fed a string of small animals to its resident crocodile are likely to be sued after police said the boy was too young to be held responsible.

A turtle, four western blue tongue lizards, two bearded dragons, two thorny devil lizards and a 1.8 metre adult female Spencer's goanna were fed or led into the jaws of a three-metre, 200kg saltwater crocodile named "Terry".

Security camera footage at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre showed the smiling youngster also bludgeoning to death a small blue tongue lizard and two more thorny devils during a half-hour of breakfast-time havoc last Wednesday.

"Police found him, but in the Northern Territory here he can't be accountable if he's under 10 years of age."

Neindorf said many of the animals fed to the croc were rare or mature and would be difficult to replace.

The boy was unknown at the centre and had "clammed up" when questioned by police on what sparked the rampage

US veterinary student sues St Kitts-based school for cruelty to animals

Denver resident, Jamie Scott, has filed a complaint against the school alleging that deadly surgeries are practiced on the animals at the institution. Scott also claimed that before she enrolled at Ross, she was told that such surgeries were “optional”. However, following her enrollment, Scott claimed that she was told that she would fail unless she performed the harmful procedures.

The student is now demanding that – like other veterinary schools – Ross offer a “humane alternative to surgically mutilating and killing healthy animals”.

A Tyneside pub has called time on one of its regular visitors after the premises were refurbished.

Peggy, a 12-year-old mare, used to enjoy a pint of beer and a packet of crisps alongside her owner at the Alexandra Hotel in Jarrow.

However, she is no longer allowed to prop up the bar following a refit which included new carpets.

Landlady Jackie Gray said: "Although she is probably cleaner than some of my customers, I had to put my foot down and show her the door."

Mr Dolan, a 62-year-old retired oil rigger, said: "People come into the pub and the first thing they say is 'Where's Peggy?'

"I tell them she's kicked the habit and is teetotal now."

University of California Sued for Withholding Documents About Funders of Prop 2 Study and Illegal Lobbying by State Employees

SACRAMENTO (Sept. 5, 2008) - The Humane Society of the United States today filed suit in Yolo County Superior Court against the University of California. UC has refused to provide public documents concerning potentially unlawful campaign activities by its staff regarding Proposition 2 - a popular anti-cruelty ballot initiative that will provide basic protections to California farm animals.

The study and the accompanying press release raise serious questions about the University's compliance with California laws restricting political lobbying by state employees. Some University of California researchers are working closely with opponents of Prop 2, while others are even explicitly listed on the opposition's website as endorsing the opposition campaign.

Police seize 27 pit bulls found in garage

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. - Authorities say two people have been charged with animal cruelty and dogfighting after the discovery of 27 malnourished and filthy pit bulls in a garage in northern Illinois.

Thirty-three-year-old Moises Colon and 24-year-old Estella Gonzalez are charged with dogfighting, aggravated cruelty to animals and cruel treatment.

Round Lake Beach Deputy Chief Rich Chiarello says police executing a search warrant Thursday found the dogs, which are now in the custody of the Lake County Health Department.

Chiarello said Friday that authorities also found pictures of dogfighting and drugs used for breeding animals.

Colon is in the Lake County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail. Gomez was released after bonding out. Their telephone is unlisted.

A man accused of killing his dog with a sword is being held without bond at the Chesapeake Correctional Center this afternoon.

Robert A. Young, 46, of the 2600 block of Darley Lane, is charged with animal cruelty. He is scheduled to appear in Chesapeake General District Court on Tuesday morning. In addition to the animal cruelty charge, Young is accused of having no rabies vaccination or city license for the dog.

Police say neighbors reported that a man was gesturing to his pit bull with a sword outside his home Sunday evening. The man went inside, and when he came back out, the dog was dead.

“The dog was stabbed in the home,” Chesapeake Police spokeswoman Dorienne Boykin said. The man later placed the dog in the garbage bin outside, she said.

It was unclear what kind of sword was used, she said.

Police arrived around 6:40 p.m. and arrested Young without incident, Boykin said. There were no other people or animals at the home, she said.

Tourists are being tricked into posing for pictures abroad with captive animals which have been drugged, mutilated and restrained, holiday companies said.

Unsuspecting UK travellers often unwittingly take part in photo opportunities with maltreated creatures unaware of the cruelty and suffering involved, the UK's Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) said.

Clients sometimes pay as much as £20 to have their photograph taken holding, stroking or sitting on a wild animal.

Woman gets probation for stabbing husband's lizards

Sara Tinsley, 38, of West Dundee, was sentenced to 18 months of probation on one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals. Authorities said she mauled her then-husband's two bearded dragons inside the couple's home following an argument.

One of the lizards died. The other survived after receiving medical treatment.

Kane County Judge Grant Wegner also ordered Tinsley to undergo an anger management evaluation, pay the $604 bill from an exotic animal hospital and complete 50 hours of community service by helping highway workers collect animal carcasses from the road.

She apparently had argued with her husband over the phone and attacked the animals with a kitchen knife, then threw them against the wall.

Mobile snap nails dog sex man

A Washington state man faces prosecution for bestiality under a new animal cruelty law after his wife discovered him having sex with the family's pit bull terrier, kirotv.com reports.

According to the Pierce County sheriff's office report, Michael Patrick McPhail, 26, of Spanaway, Pierce County, was caught red-handed last Wednesday night "having intercourse with their four-year-old female pit bull terrier" on the couple's back porch. The dog was "squealing and crying", charging papers note.

The unnamed wife quickly "took photos with her cell phone and called the sheriff's office". McPhail was duly hauled before the local Superior Court last Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree animal cruelty. He posted $20,000 bail, and is set to appear before the court on 11 December.

Watson added that the dog was "taken by animal control". ®

With shootings in mind, Rendell touts kennel bill

Gov. Rendell speaks at Schuylkill River Park's dog park about the killing of 80 dogs at a Berks County kennel. With him is Maggie.

Rendell said the "brutal killing" of 80 dogs at two licensed kennels in Berks County had shed light on the horrible but legal practice of euthanizing dogs by shooting them.

"Dogs who live in this type of kennel are valued only for the sale price of their offspring," he said at a news conference at a Center City dog park. The owners "would shoot the dogs rather than pay for vet care."

Sometime between July 24 and July 29, Elmer and Ammon Zimmerman of Kutztown shot their small-breed dogs - most of them poodles, cocker spaniels and shih tzus - and threw them in a compost pile after veterinary exams were ordered on 39 animals for fleas, according to officials with the state Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement.

"There are all kinds of ways to euthanize an animal. . . . A bullet to the head is instantaneous," he said.

Anyone interested in seeing a video re this horror, please go to the internet
and type in "CHINESE FUR FARMS." This video shows the terrible treatment
involved in the skinning of dogs which I believe are called raccoon dogs. Other farms also skin alive cats as well. Their reasoning for skinning them alive defies common sense and certainly compassion. The numbers are estimated in the millions, but for those who are incredulous - how about hundreds of thousands? Does that make it less of a tragedy?

As workers began excavating 3-foot deep drifts of urine-soaked trash and feces, they uncovered brand new purses with the sales tags still attached, he said.

Inside a little freezer was a purse decorated with pictures of kittens. Inside the purse were zip-lock bags filled with kitten corpses, Farr said.

NEW YORK - Pigeons come in many shades in New York City — but purple is typically not one of them.

That's why animal lover Joe Mora was stunned when he saw a pigeon at a Queens playground that had been painted a violet hue.

The pigeon was taken Friday to licensed wildlife rehabilitator Bobby Horvath. He said the bird is unable to fly because the feathers are completely rigid from the paint. But he says the animal is lucky its mouth or eyes didn't get stained.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman Joseph Pentangelo says if the bird was intentionally painted it "certainly" qualifies as animal cruelty.
