Eco-clubbing: Sustainable Dance Club

This technology, now in use, will enable dance clubs to run at a very low environmental impact and with reduced carbon emissions. This is all possible thanks to a new technology which enables the floor itself to generate electricity through absorbing the energy expressed by the dancing bodies. It works through a system of tiny accumulators, similar to pressure sensors, which are embedded in the floor. The physical energy of a dancer is captured by these sensors and utilized to run the facilities of the club, such as the lighting and speakers.

Other examples include clothes which, through integrated devices, harness the movement of the human body and translate it into useable electricity. There is also the novel concept of a toilet flushed with human sweat. Increasingly, we will be witness to technologies which function in many ways analogous to parasitic or symbiotic organisms in finding new ways to use our own anatomy.

BOSTON, July 21 (UPI) -- A Washington state letter carrier who delivers the mail in a kilt says his fellow male carriers would be a lot more comfortable if they followed his lead.

Dean Peterson, 48, of Lacey, Wash., is asking members of the National Association of Letter Carriers meeting in Boston this week to approve a resolution allowing for a change in the group's uniform regulations, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

Peterson argues that kilts "are far more comfortable and suitable to male anatomy than trousers or shorts because they don't confine the legs or cramp male genitals the way that trousers or shorts do."

The 6-foot, 250-pound mail carrier joined the post office eight years ago after retiring from the Air Force.

The Globe says he has spent his family's $1,800 tax stimulus rebate to send letters about kilts to postal union branches in every state.

"Please open your hearts -- and inseams -- for an option in mail carrier comfort," Peterson wrote.

A college student's new discovery of fossils collected in the East Antarctic suggests that the frozen polar cap was once a much balmier place.

The well-preserved fossils of ostracods, a type of small crustaceans, came from the Dry Valleys region of Antarctica's Transantarctic Mountains and date from about 14 million years ago. The fossils were a rare find, showing all of the ostracods' soft anatomy in 3-D.

The fossils were discovered by Richard Thommasson during screening of the sediment in research team member Allan Ashworth's lab at North Dakota State University.

Marchant estimated that the summer temperatures in Antarctica would have been about 30.6 degrees F (17 degrees C) warmer than they are now.

A new fossil discovery- the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent- provides scientists with new evidence to support the theory that the polar region was once much warmer.

The team made a new fossil discovery in the Dry Valleys of the East Antarctic region. The fossils (ostracods) come from an ancient lake - 14 million years old - and are exceptionally well preserved, with all of their soft anatomy in 3-dimensions.

Dr Mark Williams from the Department of Geology at the University of Leicester said: "This is a rare occurrence in the fossil record - but is the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent.

Berkeley Lab scientists have for the first time pieced together the three-dimensional structure of one of nature’s most exquisite pieces of machinery, a gossamer-like filament of proteins in the inner ear that enables the sense of hearing and balance.

Their work opens the door for a more fundamental understanding of how hearing works. It may also lead to improved ways to treat some forms of hearing loss, which affects about ten percent of people.

he filaments help transform the mechanical vibrations of sound into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain. They are only four nanometers wide and 160 nanometers long (one nanometer is one-billionth of a meter), but if enough of them break, the world becomes silent. They’re part of a sensory system that operates over a range of stimuli spanning six orders of magnitude. With it, people can hear a pin drop and a jet throttle to full power.

University of Michigan researchers have found that dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with motivation and positive rewards, can also promote negative feeling like fear and dread.

The researchers had previously found that desire and dread functions were anatomically close together in the nucleus accumbens (a tiny section of the brain--one-fifth of an inch long--associated with desire and reward). In their new research, they found that the effect of dopamine depended on where it was concentrated in the nucleus accumbens. Injections to the front of the nucleus accumbens caused rats to eat three times as much food as normal, but injections to the back caused them to display fearful behavior normally shown in response to a predator.

It was previously assumed that fear and desire came from different neurotransmitters, but the new study shows that anatomy alone can determine a single neurotransmitter's role.
