If the drug stores and supermarkets are any indication, celebrating Halloween is at least a month-long event - if not longer. Theme parks are no exception, of course. In fact, many of California’s theme parks start with the scary celebration of Halloween as soon as school starts in September.

Disneyland - The price of admission is no longer the scariest thing about Disneyland (though it’s still high on the list). Halloween Time at Disneyland is a gigantic annual event, running this year from September 26 to November 2. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and its star, Jack Skellington, really get to come out from the shadow of all those princesses every Fall. The Haunted Mansion has been transformed into what can only be described as a Halloween extravaganza in the past; we can assume that the same will hold true this year. It’s a little bit scary, with a few critters that pop out unexpected, but getting startled is part of the fun at Disneyland this time of year.

I think in the space of about the last 24 hours, Joe Biden claimed that the AIG bailout was bad, but then said it wasn't bad;

that we did not need to burn coal;

that his apology about the dirty McCain ad was, as they say, inoperative;

that FDR once went on television to address the nation after the stock market crash of '29 (that's a twofer that trumps Obama's Americans liberating Auschwitz);

and all but said that McCain took a $50,000 bribe.

Not a bad day's work — encompassing terrible energy policy, flip-flopping, historical ignorance, and slander. And this comes on top of Palin the "good looking" "Lt. Governor" of Alaska, Hillary as the better VP pick than himself, the patriotism of paying higher taxes, and so on.

forgive the silly slip like "Barack America" or asking the wheel-chair bound to stand up, I think the Obama staff must have gone from amusement to embarrassment and now to serious concern whether Biden is up to the job.

Had this been Palin, the election would now be over.

Treasure Island's popularity spawned a genre of pirate novels, and those novels were made into pirates movies

Disney went and adapted one of their amusement park rides into a movie, and the result was actually good. So call it the fault of Robert Louis Stevenson and Johnny Depp.

1. Pirates only fought as hard as they had to.

Depression has no place in an amusement park, but a definite pall hung over Astroland at Coney Island on Sunday, even as the screams of thrill seekers — grade-school children, metal-mouthed teenagers and nostalgic, if slightly nauseated, grownups — tore through the air.

On Thursday, the park’s owner, Carol Albert, announced that Sunday would be the last day for Astroland, the three-acre space-themed amusement park that has been a fixture on Coney Island’s Boardwalk since 1962.

Astroland’s closing would not mean the end of rides at Coney Island; the Cyclone wooden roller coaster and the Wonder Wheel, which is part of Deno’s Amusement Park, are both city landmarks and will continue to operate next year.

But part of what made Astroland unique was its accessibility, said Charles Denson, a Coney Island historian and author of the book “Coney Island Lost and Found.”

“It wasn’t Disneyland, but thank God for that,” said Mr. Denson. “It’s open to people of small means, and it always has been.”

'2030' future car: a solar-powered van good for you or the Pope

Stamati's vision of 2030 has us driving in solar-powered, four-seater, door-slidin' boxy cars with green windows and plenty of visibility. A cylindrical add-on can be fixed to the rear of the vehicle for extra seating (complete with a bar-style desk), and, also located at the rear, there are two electric engines. Both engines must be a bit on the weak side as the 2030 future car tops out at 20 miles per hour. That means it's probably only good for short-range urban driving or for use in special situations, such as at large amusement parks. Come to think of it — looking at the 2030 — you could also slap some bulletproof windows on there and you got the Pope's next glass-cage-on-wheels. And this one actually looks good to boot.

At the same time, if the argument is that the shoot is distasteful because of the vast povery in India, then the condemnation would seem unjustified.

Vogue India has created a brouhaha over its controversial spread featuring poor citizens styled with luxury items. The editorial has stirred enough emotion and debate to be carried across several oceans and into the pages of the New York Times and countless fashion blogs.

The main contention seems to be that in a country where many people live on less than $1.25 a day, it is distasteful and vulgar to pair a $10,000 Hermès Birkin bag with a peasant who may never amass that sum during the course of her life.

Commenting on the story, Vogue India Editor Priya Tanna told the New York Times,

“Lighten up.” Vogue is about realizing the “power of fashion” she said, and the shoot was saying that “fashion is no longer a rich man’s privilege. Anyone can carry it off and make it look beautiful,” she said.

“You have to remember with fashion, you can’t take it that seriously,” Ms. Tanna said. “We weren’t trying to make a political statement or save the world,” she said.

I don't mean to make light of the personal responsibility of the patient, but it just boggles my mind and it is so sad; sad beyond belief. I see 40 year olds that I know won't live another 10 years.

Suffering from excruciating spinal deterioration, Robby Garvin, 24, of South Carolina, tried many painkillers before his doctor prescribed methadone in June 2006, just before Mr. Garvin and his friend Joey Sutton set off for a weekend at an amusement park.

On Saturday night Mr. Garvin called his mother to say, “Mama, this is the first time I have been pain free, this medicine just might really help me.” The next day, though, he felt bad.
