At any given time, I have at least 10 tabs open on my computer (in addition to several programs… my computer is hating me for this). This habit of opening so many programs and sites at once on my computer and bouncing back and forth between tabs has affected how I think offline. This is a *normal* conversation with Amy:

Amy: Amanda, did you check out that Stars game last night?

Amanda: No, I was watching The Office and [NEW TAB] did you see that post on TC? We’ve also heard that, like Gtalk, it will be built on the Jabber open source platform, allowing users to add the service to many popular Instant messaging clients like Trillian (Windows) and Adium (Mac). I’d also expect web chat services like Meebo and eBuddy to add support for the service.

The timing on this certainly is interesting. He cites downtime that Twitter recently experience when two major news events overloaded the service, Macworld and the US State of the Union address, as evidence of the service's potential mainstream appeal. "While these spikes reveal some troubling capacity issues that Twitter will need to deal with, this is the surest sign that the service has gone mainstream in a way not anticipated by its founders," writes Ruffini.

Twitter is fast becoming a serious platform for discourse and discussion. More than a status app, it is being used as a first alert mechanism for the dissemination of news and for immediate discussion surrounding that news. It is the coverage of news events and the continued emergence of citizen journalism that will push Twitter toward the mainstream this year.

Tags: read write web, twitter, technology, social media, amanda mooney

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_rise_of_twitter_as_a_platform_for_serious_discourse.php</clipSource>
