According to the report, structural failures have occurred, most commonly in the form of blade failures. But the report added, that “to date all but one of the documented injuries from wind turbines have been associated with accidents involving wind industry workers and not structural failure.”

We DO Need More Domestic Energy...BUT...

clipper's remarks: Bush is absolutely right (I can't believe I'm saying that) - we absolutely do need to focus on more domestic energy production to reduce and ultimately eliminate out reliance on the Middle East.

He's absolutely wrong however (now that's more like it) when he says we need to get that additional domestic energy by drilling for more oil off-shore.

Pretty much all major scientific research - and even a great deal of the public - agree oil is not the answer to our energy crisis. There is only so much oil and any additional drilling will be far outnumbered by the increase in usage that will have occurred when we finally get that new oil online.

Could drilling for new oil help lower gas/fuel prices? Sure it could temporarily. But that would only slightly delay the inevitable. We NEED to reduce our energy consumption until we can find alternative and more abundant sources of clean energy to meet our needs.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday that while it's too early to assess Hurricane Gustav's damage to U.S. oil infrastructure off the Gulf Coast, the storm should prompt Congress to OK more domestic oil production.

"One thing is for certain, when Congress comes back, they've got to understand that we need more domestic energy, not less," Bush said in the Roosevelt Room.

He added: "One place to find it is offshore America -- lands that have been taken off the books, so to speak, by congressional law -- and now they need to give us a chance to find more oil and gas here at home.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama's promise Thursday to work to "end our dependence" on Middle East oil within a decade may be good political rhetoric when Americans have been paying $4 a gallon at the gas pumps, but the goal likely would be difficult -- perhaps impossible -- to achieve and flies in the face of how global oil markets work.

The United States uses about 21 million barrels of oil products a day. Even if the United States cuts oil demand by about 10 percent, equivalent to Persian Gulf oil imports, it is likely to continue to rely on oil imports and make no distinction as to where it is pumped, energy experts say.

Obama's pledge to cut dependents on foreign oil is a key element of his overall energy policy, which envisions aggressive development of alternative fuels and technologies to improve energy efficiency.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed putting windmills throughout New York. He has a vision of turbines atop bridges and rooftops capturing the wind and converting it to energy.

He pretty much wants to remake the Big Apple into Rock Port, the little Missouri city that proved it could be done.

Democratic attacks "out-and-out false": White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday decried as "out-and-out false" some of the criticism leveled against President George W. Bush at the Democratic convention, where Barack Obama was named the party's presidential nominee.

But White House spokeswoman Dana Perino insisted Bush had no plans to go on the attack against Obama when the Republican president addresses his own party's convention on Monday in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Sen. John McCain will be nominated.

Other prominent speakers at the convention assailed Bush on everything from energy policy to the Iraq war.

"Some of the attacks are just out-and-out false -- for example, suggesting that the Bush administration hasn't invested in alternative or renewable energies," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.

"This president has been unfairly attacked across the board by many Democrats for quite a while," she added.

Helium-3, on the other hand, is perfectly safe. It doesn't give off any pollution or radioactive waste and poses no danger to surrounding areas.
helium-3 has two protons but only one neutron. When it's heated to very high temperatures and combined with deuterium, the reaction releases incredible amounts of energy. Just 2.2 pounds (one kilogram) of helium-3 combined with 1.5 pounds (0.67 kilograms) of deuterium produces 19 megawatt-years of energy Roughly 25 tons of the stuff could power the United States for an entire year.

People have been searching for clean alternative energy sources for decades to no avail. As soon as one source seems to pass the test, someone uncovers its fatal flaw. Nuclear, wind, solar and hydropower have all been dragged through the mud to some degree. Traditional nuclear fission is too risky, winds aren't consistent, the sun doesn't always penetrate the clouds and hydropower dams disrupt natural environments.

It seems like any workable solution is light-years away -- literally. Some researchers think the answer to our energy needs rests in the stars. From wind turbines on Mars to helium-3 fusion, people are increasingly looking to extraterrestrial sources for the Earth's energy needs.

One of the sources they're looking at is helium-3 to use in nuclear fusion reactions. As opposed to nuclear fission, which splits an atom's nucleus in half, nuclear fusion combines nuclei to produce energy.

NBC, the Pickens Plan, and the Army

On Wednesday the Pickens Plan Army engaged in a battle against NBC.

The network had refused to run our 15-second ad talking about how Iran–IRAN–is moving quickly to CNG-powered vehicles so they can free up their oil to sell it to us at $120 per barrel.

Guess what: We won the battle!

By Wednesday evening, NBC had re-examined its position and told us they WOULD allow our ad to run in its original form.

Congratulations, Army! You did it!

People oppose it for various reasons, too. They hate the thought of giant turbines marring the primal Catskill vistas. They see wind as a new energy rip-off dependent on federal subsidies. They think turbines create noise and annoying flickers of light. They think the company won’t pay enough to the town, that the turbines could cause fires that would be difficult to control, that they will kill birds and bats. They say it will hurt property values, that they don’t want it in their “viewscape” or in their backyards.

How big a deal is two cents? Well, it's a big deal if you're trying to produce wind energy. A federal production tax credit of 1.9 cents per kilowatt hour is set to expire at the end of the year. Wind energy producers generally expect lawmakers to renew the credit, but Congress has yet to act. With time running out, the wind power industry is scrambling.

It may sound like just another concept that'll never be a reality, but Timelinks already set about patenting the design as well as the technology that would make it possible. The structure, nearly a whole square mile by design, would use a combination of steam, wind, and other alternative energy-gathering methods to keep itself entirely off the grid. There would also be "green spaces" that would provide the pyramidal city with agricultural space, to provide food and green-based commerce.
