China is the world’s most populous nation (1). That much anybody knows. But even if we know a bit more (that the number of Chinese is around 1.32 billion, which is just under 20% of all humans alive today), that figure is still too big to mean much beyond that China is ‘number one’ (2). This map compares the population of China’s provinces (plus the ‘renegade province’ of Taiwan), autonomous regions and municipalities with those of whole countries, and thus helps shed some light on that issue.

Here, for easy reference, is a list in descending order of magnitude of those Chinese territories (their population in brackets) followed by the foreign country they compare to.

The answer is that each of them has evolved a strange form of asexuality. Why strange? It involves males.

Sex, to get technical about it, is the mixing of genes from two parents to make a new individual that has a genetic contribution from both. Asexuality thus refers to any of a number of forms of reproduction that involve only one genetic parent.

That parent is typically the female

The reason is that, in many species, females can easily reproduce without males.

Becoming an ultimate single dad is more complicated

In short, it’s a sexual process with an asexual outcome. Now that’s kinky.

The evolution of traditional, female-only asexuality typically leads to a swift extinction.

CAPE TOWN, September 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has successfully reestablished military-technical cooperation with African countries, which saw a decline after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the head of Russia's state arms exporter said on Wednesday.

"We have recently revived our contacts with all African countries that used to be traditional buyers of Soviet weaponry," Rosoboronexport General Director Anatoly Isaykin told a news conference at the Africa Aerospace & Defence-2008 (AAD-2008) exhibition near Cape Town.

Russia's arms trade customers in Africa include Algeria, Libya, Angola, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Burkina Faso. African countries are attracted to the reliability and competitive prices of Russian arms.

Russia has been striving in recent years to regain its competitive edge in the global arms trade.

Russia exports arms to about 80 countries. Among the largest buyers are China, India, Algeria, Venezuela, Iran, Malaysia, and Serbia.

United Nations Reform: Fact or Fiction?

clipper's remarks: The United Nations promised international cooperation on eliminating the major threats to peace and security and the most serious impediments to the protection of human rights and human dignity. Sixty years after the UN officially came into existence, 24 October 1945, the trail is one of broken promises. While important successes have marked some of its paths, the international machine has been hijacked and manipulated to subvert the very causes it was intended to promote.

A number of factors have forced UN reform to move much higher up on the global agenda than ever before: the exposure of the billion-dollar UN-run Oil-for-food scam, peacekeeper-rapists, and paralysis in the face of genocide in Sudan.However, in an environment where there is little, if any, consensus on the most critical issues of our time, the real game is one of finger-pointing. Undoubtedly, the "blame America first" will continue.

Algeria: al-Qaeda Connection

Two days in a row this week car bombs rocked towns near the capital of Algeria, killing 60 members of the security forces, police recruits, and Canadian workers. The North African wing of the al-Qaeda terror network, known until last year as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks. The group has also claimed several earlier attacks including the twin suicide bombings of United Nations offices and a court building in the Algerian capital last December.

"This is Baghdad and not Algiers," bemoaned a stunned witness on Canal Algerie, the Algerian television network. The booby trapped cars, the suicide attacks, the method and the types of explosives used are reminiscent of insurgency attacks during its peak in Iraq.

Since the Anbar Awakening and the intensified hunt for al-Qaeda members in Iraq, hundreds of Jihadis have fled the country to Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, many returned to Algeria

The UN's committee on human rights has just published a report criticising Britain's anti-terror laws and the resulting curbs on civil liberties. For many commentators the issues raised are mostly a matter of academic abstractions and speculative meanderings. For me, it is anything but. These laws have destroyed my life.

Fighting terrorism is a serious matter and needs to be tackled in a serious way - not through empty gimmicks sustained by fear-mongering and alarmist rhetoric. The real danger is that we are witnessing a slide from the essential purity of habeas corpus into a Britain where the innocent are detained until proven guilty.

· Hicham Yezza, an activist and writer, was released without charge after six days in custody, immediately rearrested on immigration charges and issued with a removal order to Algeria, after which he was held for a further 27 days; he is still awaiting a conclusion to his deportation case freehicham.co.uk

ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2008) — The victory stance of a gold medalist and the slumped shoulders of a non-finalist are innate and biological rather than learned responses to success and failure, according to a University of British Columbia study using cross-cultural data gathered at the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In the first study of its kind, UBC psychology researcher Jessica Tracy investigated how pride and shame are expressed across cultures, and among the congenitally blind. She compared the non-verbal expressions and body language of sighted, blind, and congenitally blind judo competitors representing more than 30 countries, among them Algeria, Taiwan, North Korea, the Ukraine and the United States.

Terrorist activity in North Africa has been reinvigorated in the last few years by a local Algerian Islamist group turned pan-Maghreb jihadi organization: al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). A Sunni group that previously called itself the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), the organization has taken responsibility for a number of terrorist attacks in the region, declared its intention to attack Western targets, and sent a squad of jihadis to Iraq. Experts believe these actions suggest widening ambitions within the group's leadership, now pursuing a more global, sophisticated, and better-financed direction. Long categorized as part of a strictly domestic insurgency against Algeria's military government, AQIM claims to be the local franchise operation for al-Qaeda, a worrying development for a region that has been relatively peaceful since the bloody Algerian civil war of the 1990s drew to a close.

The best places in the world to have cancer

Women with cancer of the breast, colon or rectum have the best chance of survival if they live in Cuba. Algeria, in contrast, is one of the worst places to be if you have cancer.

In general, people in North America, Western Europe and other developed countries do better than people from Africa, South America and Eastern Europe.

Within the US, the analysis showed that black people with cancer have a worse chance of survival than white people. For breast cancer, white women had an 84.7% chance of surviving for five years after diagnosis, while for blacks the figure was 70.9%. The black-white disparity was also true of each of the smaller sub-populations within the US that the team were able to analyse. New York was the worst overall city in the US to live in.

French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent celebrates the twentieth year of his career in 1982 in Paris

Yves Saint Laurent, considered the greatest French couturier of his generation, died in Paris on Sunday. He was 71. Saint Laurent, who retired from fashion in 2002 because, he said, it had been "reduced to mere window-dressing," was widely considered the father of democratized fashion and the designer most often associated with the feminist ideal of empowerment in the 1970s.

Born in Oran, Algeria, Saint Laurent left home at 17 to work for Christian Dior in Paris. Upon Dior's death in 1957, Saint Laurent took over the fabled French couture house and, at only 21, garnered worldwide attention for his revolutionary first collection of short swingy trapeze dresses. The day after his Dior debut, French newspaper headlines claimed that Saint Laurent had "saved France."
