clipper's remarks: The minimum drinking age in Italy is 16. I've been in bars packed with teens and there was no excess drinking or obnoxious behavior. The only sloppy drunks I saw were two American kids outside of a bar in Florence: one was puking while the other was raving.

College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age.

This is a law that is routinely evaded,

They are calling on lawmakers to consider moving age back to 18

RALEIGH, North Carolina - College presidents from about 100 of the best-known U.S. universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

Other prominent schools in the group include Syracuse, Tufts, Colgate, Kenyon and Morehouse.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. It accuses the presidents of misrepresenting science and looking for an easy way out of an inconvenient problem. MADD officials are even urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on.

Red Bull may claim to “give you wings” but drinking too much of the popular energy drink may also lead to heart damage, a study suggests.

A study of 30 university students aged between 20 and 24 years old found that drinking just one 250ml sugar-free can of the caffeinated energy drink increased the “stickiness” of the blood and raised the risk of blood clots forming.

Using tests to measure blood pressure and the state of blood vessels around the body, the Australian researchers said that after drinking one can participants had shown a cardiovascular profile similar to that of someone with heart disease.

Red Bull today emphatically denied that the drink, which is distributed to 143 countries worldwide, was dangerous. In a statement, it said that Red Bull had been proved safe by “numerous scientific studies”, and that it had never been banned from anywhere it had been introduced.

Research Proves Beer Goggle Effect is Real

According to a new study, drinking alcohol changes our perceptions and makes people appear more attractive.

Researchers in England had 84 randomly selected heterosexual college students drink a mystery beverage that either contained enough alcohol to make them tipsy or no alcohol at all. They then had the students look at pictures of faces, and found that those who had consumed the alcohol rated the faces as being more attractive than those in the control group.

Surprisingly, the beer goggle effect wasn't just limited to the opposite sex. The students who imbibed also rated the faces from their own sex more attractive.

Now that that's been settled, it's time for science to tackle the "beer before liquor never been sicker" mantra, and the mystery of the guy who always disappears when it's his turn to buy a round.

It was supposed to be just another federal drug prosecution. The federal prosecutors introduced evidence that the man on trial was involved in the black market drug trade. The defense attorney said the government agents entrapped his client. And then the twelve citizen-jurors retired to deliberate the outcome of the case.

But then something unusual happened. The jury sent a note to the trial judge with the following query: Since the Constitution needed to be amended in 1919 to authorize federal criminal prosecutions for manufacturing and smuggling alcohol, a juror wanted to know from the judge where “is the constitutional grant of authority to ban mere possession of cocaine today?”

judges started prohibiting lawyers from advocating this to a jury upon pain of contempt. The Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) is a non-profit organization aiming to inform all Americans about their rights, powers and responsibilities when serving as trial juror.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - A Naples man accused of breaking into a Fort Myers Beach restaurant, made a not-so-smart move during the "heist".

According to sheriff's reports, the break-in activated the alarm and when the alarm company called, the alleged burglar gave the operator his real name.

But, he was unable to provide the necessary pass-code.

The alarm company, ADT, called employees at home and asked if they knew the person who identified himself as Christopher Kron. The employee didn't and told ADT to call the Sheriff's Office.

A review of video surveillance showed a white male walk around the bar area and toward the camera before leaving with what appeared to be a bottle of alcohol.

The video wouldn't be the last time Junkanoo employees would see the burglar's face.

He apparently showed up at the restaurant the next morning. An employee immediately recognized him and called the Sheriff's Office.

He identified himself as Christopher Kron, the same name he gave to the ADT operator.

Heavy alcohol use might affect genders differently

Heavy drinking may protect men from heart disease, but the effect in women is less clear, a Japanese study in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke found.

Men who consumed four or more alcoholic drinks a day lowered the risk of dying from heart disease by 19 percent, while women drinking the same amount quadrupled their risk, the study, led by Hiroyasu Iso, professor at Osaka University, found. The risk of stroke increased in both men and women.

"Alcohol increases the level of good cholesterol, known as HDL, and inhibits arterial sclerosis and platelets from clotting, and reduces the risks of getting heart disease, while it surges the blood pressure in heavy drinking," Iso said in a telephone interview. "The results show benefit from taking alcohol exceeded the harm in men."

American Airlines has joined forces with British Airways

US aviation officials have accused American Airlines of major breaches of safety, including intentionally flying planes known to need repairing

two MD-83 passenger jets were used on dozens of flights in 2007, even though repair work reported as necessary by pilots had not been done.

The FAA statement comes hours after British Airways confirmed it had sealed an alliance with American Airlines

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it wanted to fine the company a total of $7.1m (£3.8m).

Problems with drug and alcohol testing were also found, officials said.

American used the wrong provisions of its Minimum Equipment List (MEL) to return two MD-83 aircraft to service after pilots had reported problems, and flew the planes 58 times in violation of FAA regulations

"In intentionally continuing to fly the aircraft, the carrier did not follow important safety regulations intended to protect passengers and crew," the FAA said.
