The White House has launched an urgent review of Afghanistan policy, fast-tracked for completion in the next several weeks, amid growing concern that the administration lacks a comprehensive strategy for the foundering war there and as intelligence officials warn of a rapidly worsening situation on the ground.

Citing his Iraq experience, Petraeus said, “You have to talk to enemies.” He added that it was necessary to have a particular goal for discussion and to perform advance work to understand the motivations of his interlocutors.

Yet Petraeus emphasized throughout his lecture that reaching out to insurgent groups — some “with our blood on their hands,” he said — was necessary to the ultimate goal of turning them against irreconcilable enemies like Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Throughout Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign, the Republican nominee has wrapped himself in the mantle of U.S. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, proclaiming himself the leading advocate of the former commanding general in Iraq who devised last year’s controversial troop surge. Yet during a talk Wednesday about Iraq at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington policy organization, Petraeus repeatedly made statements that bolstered the foreign-policy proposals of Sen. Barack Obama, McCain’s Democratic rival, or cut against McCain’s own lines.

Petraeus relinquished command in Iraq last month. He assumes responsibility for U.S. Central Command later this month, putting him in charge of U.S. forces in the Middle East and South Asia.

Petraeus pointed to efforts by Hamid Karzai’s government to negotiate a deal with the Taliban that would potentially bring some Taliban members back to power, saying that if they are “willing to reconcile,” it would be “a positive step.”

That's a lobby group I can get behind. Mark Levin's point that McCain "doesn't flat-out lie the way Obama does" is a way of acknowledging that the stilted artificial formats of these debates principally benefits the Democrat. Most electoral seasons the Democrat candidate has to pass himself off as something other than what his record would suggest — tough on foreign policy issues, deeply personally passionately personally anguished on abortion, etc. These stilted non-debates assist the Dem in getting away with it. Mixing it up, direct challenges between candidates, etc would not only make for better viewing but diminish this season's Democratic northern liberal from passing himself off as a moderate centrist champing at the bit to "kill" bin Laden and "destroy" al-Qaeda.

Why You Shouldn't Vote for Barack Obama

I decided go out, among the flock, to talk to some of my neighbors, co-workers and people in the local Wal-mart and grocery stores, to get some reasons why I shouldn’t vote for this new shiny coin they call Barack Obama.

I found a co-worker of mine who carries the opinion that he is a Muslim pretending to be a Christian. That he hates white people and was sent here by Al Qaeda to infiltrate the terrorist’s agenda into USA soil. They know this because he received an email from a friend from church, or a co-worker who received this information from a reliable source.

I also spoke to an older friend of mine

She said, “He is a Chicago “slickster” who has a big “MTV Cribs” style house.

I did find a lady at the grocery store who told me that “McCain was a prisoner of war and therefore could be trusted with the country”.

The man, who identified himself as Jama Aden and spoke by satellite phone, is not the usual spokesman for the pirates.

He answered the telephone of the spokesman, Sugule Ali, and said Ali was not immediately available.

Aden told the Associated Press news agency: "There are high hopes we will release the ship within hours if they pay us $8m. The negotiations with the ship owners are going on well."

The pirates had originally demanded $20m (£11.4m) and insisted they would not settle for a penny less.

They have also said they are unimpressed by the US navy ships surrounding them - and talk of a Russian frigate approaching - insisting they will fight to the death rather than surrender.

"The crew is doing very well," Aden said. "We have enough food."

Six US warships are surrounding the Faina, which was hijacked late last month. They have been tracking the ship amid fears its weapons might fall into the hands of al Qaeda-linked insurgents in Somalia.

McCain: You could say, Look, is this guy, Laden, really the bad guy that's depicted? Most of us have never heard of him before. And where there is a parallel with Vietnam is: What's plan B? What do we do next? We sent our troops into Vietnam to protect the bases. Lyndon Johnson said, Only to protect the bases. Next thing you know....Well, we've declared to the terrorists that we're going to strike them wherever they live. That's fine. But what's next? That's where there might be some comparison.

McCain's 1998 remarks to Mother Jones and the absence of public statements from him about bin Laden at the time suggest that McCain had been as much behind the curve on al Qaeda as the people he would decry ten years after the fact. At the time, he did not in public treat al Qaeda as a serious danger or advocate swift and extensive action. A decade later, he had no reason--other than politics--to be pointing fingers.

It is the same sort of victory we are experiencing in Iraq. The democrats and the mainstream media are so unfamiliar with the concept of "victory" they can't recognize it. It is the kind of victory liberal democrats would never achieve, because it takes courage, foresight, and patient fortitude - - all qualities they lack. I believe only President Bush was capable of taking the war to the enemy, and seeing it through. History will be very good to him.

Taliban leaders are holding Saudi-brokered talks with the Afghan government to end the country's bloody conflict -- and are severing their ties with al Qaeda,

According to the source, fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar -- high on the U.S. military's most-wanted list -- was not present, but his representatives were keen to stress the reclusive cleric is no longer allied to al Qaeda.

Details of the Taliban leader's split with al Qaeda have never been made public before, but the new claims confirm what another source with an intimate knowledge of the militia and Mullah Omar has told CNN in the past.

The current round of talks, said to have been taken two years of intense behind-the-scenes negotiations to come to fruition, is anticipated to be the first step in a long process to secure a negotiated end to the conflict.

Khyber Zakha Khel tribes held a Jirga here on Friday. The Jirga formed fifty persons armed Committee for patrolling in the area .The Jirga was largely attended by local people. Malik Abdur Razaq while speaking to the Jirga said that the peaceful environment of Landikotal was no more existing due to the illegal activities of the so called Taliban.He made it clear that they were supporting Taliban who were fighting against US led Forces in Afghanistan.

Malik Abdur Razaq seconded the Army Chief statement to protect the borders and sovereignty of the country. He assured the army Chief that tribal people would fight side by side with army for the protection and defense of the country, as it was their motherland.

US kills 'senior Baghdad bomber'

A man said to be the planner of series of deadly al-Qaeda attacks in Iraq has been killed, the US military says.

Mahir al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, was said to head the group behind bombings which killed at least 16 people in Baghdad this week.

US officials described him as the al-Qaeda military commander for the whole of Baghdad east of the Tigris river.

They say he played a key role in planning some of the worst atrocities in Iraq over the past few years.

Zubaydi also took part in the videotaped killing of four Russian diplomats in June 2006, officials say.

"His removal from the AQI [al-Qaeda Iraq] network will send shockwaves through Baghdad's terrorist bombing networks," a US spokesman told the Associated Press.

The spokesman said the organisation, which has seen a drop in support as Sunni Muslim Awakening Councils have collaborated with the US to curb violence, would now have even greater difficulty recruiting new members.

Coalition forces in Baghdad have killed the man believed to be the mastermind of recent bombings in the Iraqi capital, the U.S. military said.

Mahir Ahmad Mahmud Judu al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Rami and Abu Assad, was believed to be the leader of one of al Qaeda in Iraq's Baghdad networks, the military said in a statement issued Friday.

The military said intelligence reports led coalition forces to a building in Baghdad's Adhamiya neighborhood Friday. They surrounded the building and called on the occupants to surrender but were engaged by small arms fire, the military said.

The forces returned fire and killed two people, Abu Rami and a female, the military said.

"Sadly, here again is a case where (al Qaeda in Iraq) has put innocent lives in danger in order to protect themselves and shield their terrorist efforts," said Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll, a spokesman for the Multi-National Force in Iraq.
