A recent study conducted by IDC and sponsored by the information management giant EMC, has provided a look in to the growth of our digital information, as well as a mind bending prediction for the future.

Using a complex mathematical formula, the study was able to estimate the size of the “digital universe.” In other words, they were able to tally up the total volume of digital information that is both created and replicated globally.

2007 reached 281 billion gigabytes, or, 281 exabytes. This works out to be about 45GB of digital information per person on the planet. And, considering the lack of information for some of the third world countries, one can only imagine how much those of us reading this article will have under their belts.

Furthermore, the amount of information about us that is generated automatically on a pretty much daily basis outweighs the total volume of information that we create about ourselves. Naturally this has large security implications that the IT sector will have to address more and more as time passes.

Child refugees found abandoned

Thousands of refugee children, some as young as three, are being found abandoned at UK ports and airports.

Often orphaned and from wartorn countries, the youngsters are packed off by relatives unable to care for them.

More than 3,500 arrived last year and the numbers look set to top 4,000 this year, a rate of around 75 a week.

Around a third of the children coming into Britain without parents or family are from
Afghanistan, with many also arriving from Iran, China, Eritrea and Somalia.

Concerns over asylum-seeking children and teenagers have been growing while the numbers of adult asylum seekers remain much lower than during the early 2000s.

The top ten nationalities of unaccompanied child asylum seekers in 2007 were:

Chinese - 315

Iraqi - 305

Eritrean - 280

Somali - 200

Bangladeshi - 125

Pakistani - 75

Nigerian - 70

the FAA proposed slot auctions at the three New York area airports. It figured that by forcing airlines to pay for taking off and landing at certain times, rather than just scheduling flights congestion could be moderately reduced

Yesterday the Government Accountability Office (GAO) announced that the the Department of Transportation will not be allowed to auction off takeoff and landing slots at busy airports. It's a blow to the FAA, which saw the auctions as a way to reduce the delays that choke New York area airports, and a win for airlines, which would have been forced to pay out of pocket for flying into and out of those airports during peak hours.

Cities, states and other local governments in the United States have been effectively shut out of the bond markets for the last two weeks, raising the cost of day-to-day operations, threatening longer-term projects and dampening a broad source of jobs and stability at a time when other parts of the economy are weakening.

The sudden loss of credit, one of the ripple effects of the current financial turmoil, is affecting local governments in all parts of the country, rich and poor alike. In New York, a real estate boom has suddenly gone bust. Washington has shelved a planned bond offering to pay for terminal expansion and parking garages already under construction at Dulles and Reagan National Airports.

Billings, Montana, is struggling to come up with $70 million more for a new emergency room. And Maine has been unable to raise $50 million for highway repairs.

Airline pilots blinded with laser beams as they come in to land

Pilots coming in to land at British airports have been forced to hand over the controls to colleagues after being temporarily blinded by laser beams deliberately shone into the cockpit from the ground.

The perpetrators are thought to be using high-intensity laser guns imported from China and Russia which can be bought over the internet for as little as £10.

Police are hunting for the attackers after a number of incidents in the past few months

A jet approaching the runway: Commercial airline pilots have complained of laser beams being shone into their eyes as they land

Laser attacks have also been reported at Gatwick, Liverpool, East Midlands and Teesside airports.

The beams involved are far stronger than the laser pens and pointers used widely in the building industry, in school lessons and for business presentations.

Pilots say they are potentially lethal in the wrong hands and that anyone caught aiming one at an aircraft should be jailed.

Last year, New Scientist revealed that the US Department of Homeland Security is developing a system designed to detect "hostile thoughts" in people walking through border posts, airports and public places. The DHS says recent tests prove it works.

Project Hostile Intent as it was called aimed to help security staff choose who to pull over for a gently probing interview - or more.

However, last week, the DHS science unit gave an update on the project, now dubbed the less-hostile-sounding Future Attribute Screening Technologies (FAST) programme. And, if DHS claims are to be believed, the research appears to be getting somewhere.

Some subjects were told to act shifty, be evasive, deceptive and hostile. And many were detected. "We're still very early on in this research, but it is looking very promising," says DHS science spokesman John Verrico. "We are running at about 78% accuracy on mal-intent detection, and 80% on deception."

Heathrow could be scrapped and replaced by an island airport in the Thames under plans being considered by London mayor Boris Johnson.

'Boris Island', as the project has been nicknamed, would limit noise pollution because planes would fly over the river rather than densely populated parts of the capital.

The four-runway airport would be built on an artificial platform made of landfill near the Isle of Sheppey and operate 24 hours a day.

The proposed location is two miles north of the Isle of Sheppey, where the water is 10ft-13ft deep.

Ferries would link the site to Kent and Essex while a railway bridge could connect it to the mainland. Aircraft would descend over the North Sea.

And Grahame Madge, the RSPB's conservation spokesman, said the proposals would affect tens of thousands of migrating birds who use the Thames estuary.

A spokesman for BAA, which operates Heathrow, said expanding existing airports was the way forward 'if we are to avoid losing our connections to the world'.

Airport screeners bypassing security

DENVER – A new policy lets airport screeners at Denver International Airport bypass security screening checkpoints that passengers have to go through.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rolled out the new uniforms and new screening policy at airports nationwide on Sept. 11.

The new policy says screeners can arrive for work and walk behind security lines without any of their belongings examined or X-rayed.

"Lunch or a bomb, you can walk right through with it," said Mike Boyd, an aviation consultant in Evergreen. "This is a major security issue."

7. Don’t travel to part of any country that is considered dangerous. While “considered dangerous” is open for interpretation, the US State Department issues travel alerts for particularly unsafe parts of the world. It’s a big world with plenty of terrific vacation spots; why ruin a romantic getaway or family vacation in a dangerous travel destination if you don’t have to?

Designer Benjamin Males presents Target Project, part performance art and part tech demo that shows how easy it is to automatically gather and record racial and obesity data with surveillance cameras. Nice way to raise awareness, Benjamin.

Imagine the possibilities: The tech could be used at airports, furtively measuring your weight so the airline will know how much fuel to pump into your plane. Or, the cameras could be placed at the turnstiles of a political convention to prove that the delegates were 99.9% fat white males.

Expect to spend more to fly home for the holidays this year, say the experts at Live Search Farecast.

Fares for Thanksgiving 2008 are up 31% from 2007, while Christmas and New Year's fares are up 30%, according to the website.

Farecast's data found that nationally, average costs for the most popular Thanksgiving itinerary, a Wednesday departure, Sunday return, is $490, up $66 from last year.

The website found Christmas and New Year's fares averaging a little less than Thanksgiving fares, at $420.

Grus noted that fees for baggage, food and other extras that used to be free may send your travel costs even higher.

Tips from Farecast for finding bargains:

• Travelers flying to and from major airports may see price drops this fall, but those using smaller regional airports are more affected by airline capacity cuts and should not wait as prices are unlikely to go down.
