Apparently mega-billionaire Virgin owner Richard Branson flew a 747 across the Atlantic with one of the engines being powered by a fuel made from coconut oil.

I have two reactions.

First, how many coconuts do you think had to make the ultimate sacrifice to fuel Branson’s little project? Answer: 150,000. For one engine. For one cross-Atlantic trip.

Which leads into my second reaction: What the hell was the point of that?

Does anyone really think that coconut-powered aviation is something we should pursue? That it’s practical to burn up 600,000 coconuts to fuel one cross-Atlantic trip? Do these people even know what the economic and environmental impact of burning 600,000 coconuts for an airplane flight is? How many coconut groves would we have to plant to make this work?

Maneuvering is coordinated through the use of radio, which was used so extensively by the Germans that individual tanks carried their own equipment. The French, by comparison, hardly used radio at all. The French High Command was not even connected by radio to units in the field. Instead, it dispatched orders by motorcycle courier from its headquarters outside of Paris.

Incidentally, the German Wehrmacht never officially used the word blitzkrieg -- literally, "lightning war" -- though it did appear in several prewar German military publications. It came into popular use after turning up in Time magazine's coverage of the Polish invasion."

1939: Germany invades Poland, starting the second European war in a generation and introducing the world to a new kind of warfare: blitzkrieg.

This form of attack, which helped the Germans obliterate the Poles in three weeks and the French in only six, relies on rapid mobility and the coordination of massed armor and infantry, with fighter planes and dive bombers providing air support. It also depends on the element of surprise, one reason Nazi Germany never declared war prior to invading an enemy.

The concept of blitzkrieg was a matter of adapting 20th-century technology -- especially the tank, the airplane and the radio -- to the age-old tactics of mobile warfare. The Germans were not alone in exploring these possibilities -- military thinkers like Britain's Basil Liddell Hart and France's Charles de Gaulle also wrote extensively on the subject during the interwar years -- but conditions within the German army, and inside Germany itself, made for a more receptive audience.

clipper's remarks: This NYPD scanner audio from 9/11 reports a remarkable incident that news has never covered, that they stopped a truck that day that had a mural of a plane diving into New York City, as well as "remote controlled plane" clearly mentioned in the audio. (See audio clip link at bottom above).

Also detained earlier were the "dancing Israeli" art students who were high-fiving each other during the tragedy, even later admitted their Mossad connections and that they were sent to "record the incident" (i.e. foreknowledge). Even Democracy Now here discussed that documented incident.

The full article, and the source it links to is worth consideration. The source linked also looks in depth into the transcript of this scanner, and whether the audio is authentic, etc.

Recently, an email drifted in about an article I wrote, What were the Mossad with fraudulent New Zealand Passports doing in Iraq?

The writer said, “I’ve known about this for some time -- that the Mossad was involved in murdering our troops in a variety of methods to keep them there so we could ‘finish’ the job by destroying Syria and Iran. For years now I’ve suspected and now know for sure the Mossad had a lot to do with the 9/11 attack on the WTC. The attached mp3 is a recording of NYPD radio transmissions on 9/11. Listen from the 3-minute mark almost to the end. This was never reported in the media.”

The recording is titled, “The WTC-10-5-the-message-about-the-remote-controlled-plane.”

Solar plane makes record flight

Solar plane's 3 day flight

A UK-built solar-powered plane has set an unofficial world endurance record for a flight by an unmanned aircraft.

The Zephyr-6, as it is known, stayed aloft for more than three days, running through the night on batteries it had recharged in sunlight.

The latest flight was conducted at the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.

The Zephyr flew non-stop for 82 hours, 37 minutes.

The US Department of Defense funded the demonstration flight under its Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) programme.

(PhysOrg.com) -- The planned retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2010 will bring to a close an era that opened in the Antelope Valley nearly a half century ago.

The vehicle which began that era – the M2-F1 – was an unlikely forefather to the shuttle. The world’s first manned lifting body, the M2-F1 was made of wood, had an internal framework of steel tubes, looked like a bathtub sitting on a tricycle, and had no wings.

Conceived by NASA engineers at the Ames Research Center, the lifting body was intended as an alternative to a capsule spacecraft, which returned to Earth dangling under a parachute. A lifting body was not a conventional winged aircraft, but rather, used air flowing over its fuselage to generate lift. This design allowed it to renter the atmosphere and land on a runway like a conventional airplane.

Fires in the 47-story office tower at the edge of the World Trade Center site undermined floor beams and critical structural columns, federal investigators concluded Thursday, as they attempted to curb still-rampant speculation that explosives or fuel fires were responsible for the building’s collapse of Sept. 11, 2001.

The long-delayed report by engineers here at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in suburban Washington is intended to solve one of still lingering central questions about the 2001 attacks: Why did 7 World Trade Center fall, if it was not hit by an airplane.

“Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail,” said Shyam Sunder, the lead investigator. “Video and photographic evidence combined with detailed computer simulations show that neither explosives nor fuel oils played a role in the collapse that brought the building down.”

It is the first skyscraper in modern times to collapse primarily as a result of a fire.

The most familiar songs evoke our strongest memories

Over at Cognitive Daily, there's an interesting post on a study done on music and the memories we have associated with it. The upshot? The more familiar we are with a song from a past, the stronger the memories we have associated with it. That makes logical sense: You'd think the brain would reinforce all things linked to the tunes we most strongly like or dislike.

For example, I strongly remember how strongly my sister and I groaned on a car trip when We Built This City by Jefferson Airplane played on the radio. Because we so disliked the song and because it's emotionally painful to recall, I remember the color of the seats, the fall foliage, and my father's laughter.

So which comes first, as the blogger puts it: "do the preferred songs evoke the memories, or do we like the songs because we associate them with memories?" The study only finds a correlation, so we need to do more research to draw conclusions.

Many frequent fliers can recite the mandatory pre-takeoff safety briefing along with the flight attendant delivering it. What they cannot do, however, is replicate the odd cadence and ultra-formal speech patterns known as airline English. Airline English is an unusual blend of standard English and airline jargon spoken almost exclusively by airline crew members, flight attendants and pilots.

One example of airline English is the nautical terminology associated with air travel. Passengers do not put their suitcases into the overhead cabinets, they "stow" their "cargo" into the overhead "holds." The staff on board an airplane are actually "crew members" who answer to a captain. Flight attendants routinely use this nautical terminology in complete sentences, which can be a little confusing to first time passengers.

Airline English can also be the result of repetitive social greetings, particularly the mandated "goodbye" to disembarking passengers.
