Passenger plane forced to land after violating Iranian airspace

Reports that the jet was a US warplane with military personnel on board were contradicted by other sources inside the country, which said its nationality was in fact Hungarian.

Reports said five people were interrogated, but allowed to leave the following day after it became clear their trespass into Iranian airspace had been a mistake.

They added that the interrogation revealed that they had strayed over the border unintentionally en route to Afghanistan.

However, the Pentagon denied that any of its aircraft were missing and it later emerged that the plane was a Falcon passenger jet.

The plane is said to have entered Iranian airspace from Turkey despite repeated warnings by the Islamic Republic Air Force.

Reports said the jet was flying low in an attempt to slip under Iranian radar before being made to touch down.

Quantas has another safety mishap in flight

Perth, Australia (AHN) - A Qantas passenger plane carrying 313 on board made an emergency landing in Western Australia on Tuesday after a sudden change in altitude, that injured 40 passengers and crew, some seriously.

The Qantas Airbus A330-300 had left Singapore and was on its way to Perth, Australia when it issued a mayday call after suddenly changing altitude.

A statement of the airline said, "A number of passengers and crew sustained injuries, including fractures and lacerations, on board QF72 this afternoon en route from Singapore to Perth following a sudden change in altitude."

The incident is the latest in a series of mishaps involving Qantas that has tarnished its reputation as being one of the safest airlines in the world.

Officials of the carrier have yet to conduct investigation into the change in altitude, but believe it was caused by turbulence.

A number of emergency vehicles and personnel were on standby at the Learmonth air base, when the plane landed.

It seems all news is bad news when it comes to aviation these days, and it's too bad because it overshadows just how wonderful it is that we can fly. Think about it -- 100 years ago, few could imagine it. Today we take it for granted.

The Airbus A380 is the world's largest passenger plane. It is also the heaviest and the costliest commercial passenger aircraft ever built. If you want to buy it, it will cost you more than $300 million apiece. The super jumbo is gigantic, like a Titanic in the sky. It's tail stands seven stories high; and the plane is as wide as a soccer field, stretching 260 feet from wingtip to wingtip. It is also as long as two blue whales.

The A380 is the ultimate in luxury. It has three decks: the top two for passengers and the lower one available for a medical centre, shopping or a fast-food franchise. The aircraft has features like spas, casinos, gyms, bedrooms, and duty-free shops. Some airlines also plan to fix staterooms with beds, showers, a water feature, a double-width staircase between decks, and luxurious, book-lined club-style bars.

No it is not a luxury hotel room! This is a first class seat bed on board the first Airbus A380 superjumbo.

the FAA proposed slot auctions at the three New York area airports. It figured that by forcing airlines to pay for taking off and landing at certain times, rather than just scheduling flights congestion could be moderately reduced

Yesterday the Government Accountability Office (GAO) announced that the the Department of Transportation will not be allowed to auction off takeoff and landing slots at busy airports. It's a blow to the FAA, which saw the auctions as a way to reduce the delays that choke New York area airports, and a win for airlines, which would have been forced to pay out of pocket for flying into and out of those airports during peak hours.

The current mess would never have occurred in the absence of ill-conceived federal policies. The federal government chartered Fannie Mae in 1938 and Freddie Mac in 1970; these two mortgage lending institutions are at the center of the crisis. The government implicitly promised these institutions that it would make good on their debts, so Fannie and Freddie took on huge amounts of excessive risk.

Bankruptcy does not mean the company disappears; it is just owned by someone new (as has occurred with several airlines). Bankruptcy punishes those who took excessive risks while preserving those aspects of a businesses that remain profitable.

In contrast, a bailout transfers enormous wealth from taxpayers to those who knowingly engaged in risky subprime lending. Thus, the bailout encourages companies to take large, imprudent risks and count on getting bailed out by government. This "moral hazard" generates enormous distortions in an economy's allocation of its financial resources.

HONOLULU - Two pilots for Hawaii's Go airlines who slept through their flight's landing procedure were suspended for the careless and reckless operation of an aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday.

The pilots, who have been fired by Go, completed their suspensions on Sept. 9, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said. He did not know whether they are flying again with a different carrier.

Qantas says a delay in rolling out full internet access on its new planes had nothing to do with controversy in the United States about air passengers surfing porn websites.

The world's biggest airline, American Airlines, last month started offering passengers, for a fee, full in-flight broadband internet access on its Boeing 767-200 planes.

The US Association of Professional Flight Attendants has subsequently called on the airline to install filter software that blocks inappropriate sites, following complaints from flight attendants and passengers.

The full internet service was now scheduled to be available later next year, the airline said.

MANILA, Philippines -- Bureau of Immigration (BI) commissioner Marcelino Libanan relieved on Thursday an officer of the agency at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA-3) for her alleged involvement in Wednesday’s foiled departure of 17 undocumented contract workers to the Middle East.

Libanan issued an order recalling immigration officer Mindaya Ombawa to the BI main office in Intramuros pending investigation of her alleged involvement in facilitating the attempted departure of the workers, all said to be minors bound for Jordan and Syria.

“We will never condone the involvement of any of our personnel in human trafficking. Such practice warrants the stiffest penalty for it is tantamount to exposing our women to abuse and exploitation in foreign lands,” the BI chief said in a statement.

Two suspected illegal recruiters, identified only as “Teng” and “Toni,” who allegedly hired the minors, were later arrested inside Ombawa’s car after a brief car chase.

When oil was at $140 a barrel, Delta Air Lines Inc. slapped a "fuel surcharge" on frequent-flier reward tickets. American, United and US Airways began charging to check a single bag when oil was over $130 a barrel, each blaming fuel costs.

And now that the price of oil -- the biggest expense in operating an airline flight -- has fallen below $100 a barrel, will airline passengers see any fee relief?

Not likely. In fact on Monday, UAL Corp.'s United Airlines boldly doubled its fee to check a second bag to $50 one-way.

While some airlines have reduced the fuel surcharges they place on cargo shipments, passengers have yet to see any relief.

But a bigger change is at work in the airline industry. Airlines have long hoped they could find ways to extract more revenue out of customers than just fares, and this year's fuel crisis prompted them to ratchet up the push toward charging for different services a la carte.

Coffee, tea, or porn? "I don't think so," say American Airline flight attendants.

A union representative told Bloomberg News that attendants and passengers have raised "a lot of complaints" over the issue.

American Airlines is one of several airlines testing in-flight Internet access as a way to lure more passengers. American has been offering the service on a limited basis since August 20th on some flights between New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and between New York and Miami. The cost of the service on cross-country flights is $12.95, and it's $9.95 on the New York to Miami route.

The truth is that it hasn't been a major problem on flights thus far. In fact, American Airline's spokesman Tim Smith told Bloomberg that the "vast majority" of customers already use good judgment in what's appropriate to look at while flying versus what's not.

The fracas over a 6-year-old story about United Airlines' bankruptcy filing that got passed around as though it were fresh news, triggering a massive sell-off in the airline parent's stock, has raised questions about the reliability of the company's vaunted technology

Some analysts say the scenario with the United story shows the limitations of automated search technology - based on tools called "bots" and "scrapers" - and highlights the need for a more precise system for identifying information, especially news reports

The story caused the airline company's stock to plummet more than 70 percent, and its trades on the Nasdaq stock market were halted at the request of Chicago-based UAL. The shares eventually recovered after word went out that the report was old news. United exited bankruptcy in February 2006.

Google's search technology was misled by the updated time stamp on the 6-year-old story.
