The Obama campaign is trotting out a gubernatorial endorsement for his energy policy today... from Republican Alaska Governor and long-shot VP candidate Sarah Palin.

An aide to the presumptive Democratic nominee sent over a link to a Palin press release Tuesday morning in which the governor praised Obama for, among other things, calling for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline and proposing $1,000 rebates for families struggling with energy costs.

"We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home," Palin's press release read. "This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board."

3,000 Vets, War Protesters Hand-Deliver Their Message

And with that conciliatory gesture, an unpermitted march for peace was allowed to proceed Wednesday afternoon through downtown Denver streets - peacefully.

It was easily the largest demonstration in a week filled with them.

After about an hourlong standoff with police at the end of the march, contact was made with an Obama aide. Mission accomplished.

Jill Biden was teaching in a locked psychiatric unit at the Rockford Center in Delaware when one of her teenage students started spiraling out of control. He was on his feet, aggressive and abusive. In back of the class, a burly aide sprang up, ready to intervene. Biden shot him a look that said, "Wait."

In just a few moments, the situation was defused without disruption or force.

"She was able to talk that kid back into the appropriate behavior, and she did it by conveying that she understood how he was feeling," said Dana Garrett, the aide, who vividly remembers the incident two decades ago. "She didn't have an air of status about her. Someone else had to tell me she was the wife of the senator."

Obama has launched a response ad, which addresses McCain directly, and will air in Ohio, Tracey said.

"With all our problems, why is John McCain talking about the '60s, trying to link Barack Obama to radical Bill Ayers?" says Obama’s ad.

The Obama campaign plans to punish the stations that air the ad financially, an Obama aide said, organizing his supporters to target the stations that air it and their advertisers.

McCain’s camp, meanwhile, appears to welcome the controversy.

“The fact that [Obama] is launching his own convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn't bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight's speeches will,” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

Sen. Barack Obama has launched an all-out effort to block a Republican billionaire’s efforts to tie him to domestic and foreign terrorists in a wave of negative television ads.

Obama’s campaign has written the Department of Justice demanding a criminal investigation of the “American Issues Project,” the vehicle through which Dallas investor Harold Simmons is financing the advertisements. The Obama campaign — and tens of thousands of supporters — also is pressuring television networks and affiliates to reject the ads. The effort has met with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks.

“This is a sad ploy to circumvent the First Amendment by a campaign who has no arguments with the merits of our ad. It’s the classic maneuver: If you can’t win on the merits, file a lawsuit,” said a spokesman for the American Issues Project

Obama’s campaign has written a pair of letters to station managers carrying the ads.

John Edwards' calls to former advisers asking forgiveness for lying about his affair have been met with rage, according to a report published Monday in The New York Daily News.

"It was kind of pathetic, to tell you the truth," an ex-aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the paper. The aide reportedly said he has no intention of returning Edwards' call.

The former presidential candidate admitted Aug. 8 that he had an affair with one of his campaign staff members, Rielle Hunter, in 2006 when his wife Elizabeth's cancer was in remission.

Edwards — who is noticeably absent from the Democratic National Convention that began Monday in Denver — is said to be making phone calls to his former supporters, saying, "I let you down, and I'm sorry," the Post reports.

One former assistant told the paper that he ending his conversation with Edwards abruptly, telling the former North Carolina senator, "I don't want you to call me again."

WaPo: 'Obama Tax Plan Would Balloon Deficit'

Measured against current law and against the promises of his fellow Democrats, Obama would rack up huge deficits. According to a recent analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, Obama's tax plan would add $3.4 trillion to the national debt, including interest, by 2018.

This is a challenge to the Obama-loving media. Network anchors like Matt Lauer and George Stephanopoulos have used the Tax Policy Center estimates against John McCain. Will they report these numbers and offer negative coverage to Obama?

Don't look for the Heritage Foundation or the Cato Institute in this article. Montgomery's story relied entirely on policy analysts who oppose extending federal tax cuts (with the exception of Obama spokesman Jason Furman). She calls them "deficit hawks." They include:

Iraq to US: All Troops Must Leave

clipper's remarks: The Iraqi government is making it clear: no prior conditions for a US withdraw, no consideration of "conditions" on the ground, no "residual force" left in Iraq to train the Iraqi troops. All US soldiers must be gone by the end of 2011. Not a single one should remain. They all should just leave.

The Iraqi government has given the only reason that matters for their position: viz., it's their country and they have the right to show us the door.

The US isn't wanted in Iraq. It never has been. It's time to leave. A timetable for withdraw is the compromise the Iraqis are giving us. It's what they want...just like Barack Obama said.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Monday no security agreement with the United States could be reached unless it included a "specific deadline" for the withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq.

An aide to the prime minister said Monday that Iraq remained adamant that the last American soldier must leave Iraq by the end of 2011 _ regardless of conditions at the time.

"There can be no treaty or agreement except on the basis of Iraq's full sovereignty," al-Maliki told a gathering of tribal sheiks. He said such an agreement must be based on the principle that "no foreign soldier remains in Iraq after a specific deadline, not an open time frame."

Tensions Boiling Over Between Obama-Clinton Camps

The peevishness on both sides and the volume of behind-the-scenes catcalls are noteworthy because both the Clinton and Obama teams had resolved in pre-convention talks that it was overwhelmingly in the interests of both sides to get along.

Still another reminds Biden that an Iranian delegation is in Moscow that very day to discuss a $300 million arms deal with Vladimir Putin that the United States has strongly condemned.

First, Iranians aren’t Arabs. They’re Persians, as both Arabs and Iranians would quickly point out to anyone ignorant of the distinction. They have no relation linguistically or culturally, except that both are predominantly Islamic. One would expect a foreign-policy expert to know at least that much. Team Obama ridiculed John McCain when he inadvertently mixed up Sunnis and Shi’ites, but this is much more fundamental.

There’s one Democrat who would seem to have little or no chance of being picked by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) to be his running mate – his former opponent, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).

But it’s not for the reason you think.

Obama has often said, most recently on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on July 27, that Clinton “would be on anybody’s short list.”

But apparently not his.

“She was never vetted,” a Democratic official reported. “She was not asked for a single piece of paper. She and Senator Obama have never had a single conversation about it. How would he know if she’d take it?”

The official also said Clinton never met with Obama’s vetting team of Eric Holder and Caroline Kennedy.

And the official said she was never asked for medical records or for any financial 2008 information about her or former President Bill Clinton. The last information the couple has disclosed about taxes and financial holdings was for 2007.
