Tularemia - An uncommon disease with significant risks

Recently, Miami Valley Veterinarians received a bulletin from the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Health regarding a disease many of us probably had not heard about since our days in Veterinary school. Tularemia (Francisella tularensis) is a bacterial disease most common in western states but with a known presence in Ohio, particularly southwestern Ohio.

Why is this important to pet owners? Tularemia is most often found in rodents and rabbits, but cats are also highly susceptible. However, this disease is not often seen in pet cats. This bulletin was prompted by the diagnosis of Tularemia in two cats that lived in Kettering.

Stalks of wild rice are protruding from the chamber that simulates the carbon dioxide levels projected for 2030. After just three weeks, the wild rice plants have grown 3 to 4 feet tall - a foot more than they do in the chamber simulating today's atmosphere - and have filled the chamber to overflowing.

Carbon dioxide - and its impact on crops and weeds - is the wild card in predicting the impact of climate change on agriculture. Higher temperatures cause plants to grow faster and can harm plants during critical periods - including pollination - that affect crop yields.

The temperature increase expected in the Midwest over the next 30 years could decrease crop yields by about 4 percent, the study found.

Overall, U.S. crop production could rise by 7 percent or fall by 7 percent, depending on the growth-inducing effect of carbon dioxide, said William Cline

Growing Vertical: Skyscraper Farming

Atypical farm burns vast quantities of fossil fuels to plow fields, sow seeds, reap harvests and truck products many miles to population centers. It spreads heaps of petroleum-based fertilizers, which then run off into streams and watersheds. It also consumes rivers of freshwater and casts pesticides across the countryside. Raising chickens and pigs further insults the earth with unhygienic filth.

Crops could grow and be harvested year-round instead of at the end of one season, multiplying annual yield by at least four times. Urban agriculture could also convert municipal wastewater into irrigation water, reducing a city’s refuse problem. And consumers would get the freshest food possible, without pesticides.

George Washington Carver is one of the most famous American scientists, inventing or improving upon dozens of products.

In 1897, George Washington Carver was named director of agriculture for the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes, an all-black school and research institution in Alabama. In a short time, Carver would revolutionize farming and the South. Carver's system of crop rotation -- growing different plants each year on one plot of land -- helped revitalize poor soil. But this was just the start, as Carver invented or bettered dozens of products including adhesives, bleach, buttermilk, cheese, ink, chili sauce, linoleum, mayonnaise, shampoo, shoe polish, shaving cream and peanut butter.
