A Palestinian non-government organisation in the United Kingdom has asked Paul McCartney of the Beatles to cancel his forthcoming concert in Israel because "the expropriations from the Palestinians (by Israel) and the Israeli apartheid cannot be a reason for festivities".

(PACBI) has affirmed in a statement directed to McCartney that "performing in Israel in this moment is morally the same as performing in South Africa at the peak of the apartheid".

StandWithUs, has rebelled in defence of Israel, affirming in a letter to McCartney and his manager Stuart Bell that the statement of PACBI "contains just incredible lies".

"Performing in Tel Aviv you can expect to meet an audience of Jews, Muslims and Christians, a thing which is just impossible in any Arab state," StandWithUs affirmed.

In the meantime the tickets for the concert of McCartney

The changed realities in the Middle East and in Africa have been accompanied by a new activist posture of China in Africa. Outmaneuvered in Asia by China and challenged by the rising democratic forces in Latin America, the spaces for the accumulation of capital by US capitalists are dwindling.

In the past, when there was a crisis such as the period after the Vietnam War, the USA could transfer the crisis to other countries via the IMF. But the European Union has challenged this calculus and created the Euro as an alternative to the US dollar. It will not be possible for the IMF to transfer the crisis to Asia, Europe, India, the Middle East or Latin America. This means that there is only one area of the world where the US imperialists will have free rein. This is in Africa. It is also in Africa where there is a movement against the economic terrorism of neo-liberalism and the unjust conditionalities of the IMF and World Bank.

GM plants detect landmines and turn red

SYDNEY: Genetically-modified plants that turn red when they grow in the presence of explosives are being trailed for their effectiveness to detect landmines in South Africa.

Scientists at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with a Danish biotechnology firm, are testing a type of tobacco plant that produces the red pigment anthocyanin in the presence of breakdown products of TNT (trinitrotoluene). TNT is an explosive often found in landmines.

LAGOS, NIGERIA -- Nigerian anti-graft police have seized $629,834 raised at a gala dinner in support of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign, authorities said Sunday.

Obama's campaign said it was in no way affiliated with the group Africans for Obama and would not accept funds from the organization. Although the fundraising was not illegal in Nigeria, it is illegal under U.S. law for foreign groups to donate funds to American political parties.

Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, chairwoman of Africans for Obama and head of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, organized the fundraiser in Lagos on Aug. 11. A "platinum" ticket for a table of eight cost $21,226.

It is believed the spoonbills are the first pair to breed in Scotland

Conservationists believe a wading bird rarely spotted in the UK has bred in Scotland for the first time.

Two spoonbills arrived on the Dee Estuary in Kirkcudbright earlier this year and three younger birds have been seen in the past few days.

The RSPB said the species was of European conservation concern and a very rare breeding bird in the UK.

"The three which looked to be juveniles were feeding behind the adults and begging to be fed.

"We can only assume that they are their offspring and that they must have nested nearby.

Spoonbills turn up in various places from time to time but, from what I am told, this would be the first known pair to breed in Scotland."

It is a large white wading bird, slightly smaller than a heron," he explained.

The bird usually breeds in mainland Europe and migrates to Africa in the winter.

The 50 km diameter structure, also referred to as the "Eye of Africa", is located just a little off the beaten path in Northern Mauritania, not far from Ouadane or from the route of the endangered Dakar Rally.
