The Front Line - a secure Web Browser

Choosing a secure web browser is very important to having a secure computer as it is your main point of contact with the Internet. For an average user, probably in excess of 90% of their internet traffic flows through the browser. If you are reading this in Windows, there is about a 70% chance you are using Internet Explorer to do this - if you are not then you can probably skip the rest of this section, but it you may want to stay for the feeling of smugness you may experience.

There are a number of othre tools that I use regularly on my Computer, I will review them here briefly, some are concerned with security, some help productivity, and some are just fun. BitDefender Lab Reveals Top Three E-Threats in May

The top menace of the month is Trojan.Clicker.CM, a pop-up-ad-serving trojan distributed via infected websites. In order to successfully display the pop-ups containing advertisements, the trojan has the ability to bypass the Norton Internet Security Pop-up Blocker.

In second place is Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N. Despite the complicated-sounding name, this trojan serves a very simple function: to load another piece of malware. It does so by pretending to be a helper application that downloads a "codec" playing a "special type" of WMA file. Once the user is tricked, it downloads and runs Adware.PlayMp3z.A, an application meant to take personal information from the computer and use it for marketing or suspicious practices. When executed, the adware displays a pop-up with an EULA, in an attempt to convince users of its legitimacy.

While law enforcement co-operation with government and the IT community is paramount in addressing the problem in the short term, longer-term solutions must be found. One way to address the issue of the growth of the "black cybereconomy" in the long term is to harness the IT talent in developing countries that otherwise might be co-opted into illegal activity, say security experts.

"We have to make it more attractive to be in the white economy than in the black--when that happens we will turn a corner. We're starting to see that happen as companies look to less expensive economies as places to put people. In Eastern Europe and Asia there are highly skilled people where there are less opportunities--this is where the black economy is fueled now," said McAfee's Telafici.

Communicating via Internet relay chat (IRC) and forums, hackers advertise Iframe exploits, pop-unders, click fraud, posting and spam. "If you don't have it, you can rent it here," boasts one post, which also offers online video tutorials. Prices for services vary by as much as 100 percent to 200 percent across sites, while prices for non-Russian sites are often higher: "If you want the discount rate, buy via Russian sites," said Genes.

In the 2007 black economy, everything can be outsourced, according to Trend Micro. A scammer can buy hosts for a phishing site, buy spam services to lure victims, buy drops to send the money to, and pay a cashier to cash out the accounts. "You wonder why anyone still bothers burgling houses when this is so much easier," said Genes.

Google Search Results Delivering Massive Malware Attacks

For the last two days, security software firm Sunbelt Software has been all over what could develop into a scary trend: Rigged Google search results that deliver big malware payloads.

On Monday, Sunbelt reported “we’re seeing a large amount of seeded search results which lead to malware sites.” The search terms leading you to these malware payloads were pretty basic fare.

Sunbelt Software has uncovered tens of thousands of individual pages that have been meticulously created with the goal of obtaining high search engine ranking. Just about any search term you can think of can be found in these pages.

With Scam.Iwin, the victim’s computer is used to generate income for the attacker in a pay-per-click affiliate program by transmitting false clicks to the attacker’s URLs without the user’s knowledge. The infected Scam.Iwin files are not ordinarily visible to the user. The files are executed and run silently in the background when the user starts the computer and/or connects to the internet
