Abu Tiba is assessed to be the AQI senior advisor in Baghdad, providing guidance and targeting assistance to subordinates throughout the city, including Abu Uthman. Abu Tiba is suspected of terrorist activity since 2005. He was previously reported to be the AQI emir of the Karkh district of Baghdad and managed the AQI presence in the capital during its most active operational period in early 2007. He reportedly oversaw financial and attack operations for up to 15 attack cells, providing them with money, weapons and explosives. He is alleged to have personally approved targets for car and suicide bombings targeting Iraqi civilians, intended to incite sectarian violence.

In Baghdad’s Rusafa district, Abu Uthman is suspected of overseeing car-bombings and suicide attacks by his network, which targeted Iraqi civilians and attempted to incite sectarian violence. Reporting also indicates he associates with AQI senior leaders, including AQI leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri

Al-Qaeda Iraq leader 'arrested'

The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been arrested, according to media reports quoting the country's defence ministry.

Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was detained in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul,

The US military in Iraq said it was currently looking into the reports.

In an hour-long audio tape broadcast last month, he purportedly called for renewed attacks on US troops and noted the recent announcement that 4,000 had died in Iraq.

"We must celebrate this event in our special way, and make the defeated Bush join us in this celebration," he said.

"The commander of Ninevah military operations informed me that Iraqi troops captured Abu Hamza al-Muhajir the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq," al-Askari told The Associated Press by telephone.

He did not have any further details nor did he say when the Al Qaeda leader was arrested. According to unconfirmed reports he was caught Thursday evening in the Tayran area in central Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD — The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was arrested in the northern city of Mosul, the Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

Spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said the arrest of al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was confirmed to him by the Iraqi commander of the province. There was no immediate confirmation or comment from U.S. forces on the arrest.

The U.S. military in Baghdad said "we are currently checking with Iraqi authorities to confirm the accuracy of this information."

News of the arrest was also reported by Iraqi state television and Arab satellite TV stations.

The state channel, Iraqiya, said that Minister of Interior Jawad al-Bolani would reward Mosul police for the capture.

On September 25, 2007, a coordinated air strike by a USAF F-16 killed Abu Usama al Tunisi. Al Tunisi was one of the most important leaders within al Qaeda in Iraq and part of the inner circle of advisors to Abu Ayyub al Masri.

Al Tunisi was known as the Emir of Foreign Terrorists in Iraq, responsible for oversight of Foreign Terrorists moving into Iraq and their coupling with terrorist cells to conduct operations.

Like all members of Abu Ayyub al-Masri's inner circle, al Tunisi (from Tunisia), was a foreigner, not an Iraqi.

Following the deaths of both Abu Musab Al-zaqawi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the decimation of the ranks of Al Qaeda in Iraq, and the growing unpopularity of foreign insurgents among Iraqis, some senior terrorists affiliated with Al Qaeda have called upon Usama Bin Laden to withdraw all of his troops from Iraq by October.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Unconfirmed reports that al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri has been killed come from local tribes and not Iraq's intelligence services or military, an Iraqi government spokesman said Tuesday.

Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the government won't be able to confirm al-Masri's death until it makes an identification of the body.

"We received intelligence reports of al-Masri getting killed in clashes between al Qaeda in Iraq and other militant groups at dawn today" in al-Niba'ie in Taji, north of Baghdad, Brig. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf said.

Al-Masri -- also known as Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Muhajer -- succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq after he was killed in a U.S. airstrike in June.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S.-led forces captured a senior al-Qaida leader who was responsible for hundreds of civilian deaths and housed foreign fighters who carried out suicide bombings, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-led coalition handed over security responsibilities in Iraq's Najaf province to Iraqi forces on Wednesday, a key step in troubled efforts to get the fragile government to stand on its own.

The leader, who was not identified, was arrested in a raid in Mosul on Dec. 14, the military said in a statement.

It said the suspect served as al-Qaida's military chief in Mosul in 2005, and then took up the same job in western Baghdad.

"During that time, he coordinated car vehicle-borne improvised explosives device attacks and kidnap for ransom operations in Baghdad," the military said. It cited reports that said he organized an attempt to shoot down a U.S. military helicopter in May this year.

The military said the capture would lead them closer to Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, who took over as leader of al-Qaida in Iraq after his predecessor, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in June.

It is a relatively peaceful area of Iraq, tightly controlled by police and Shiite guards.

"Coalition forces will continue to provide support if called upon," Maj. Gen. Kurt Cichowski said. "We will be quite literally just up the road."

Even with U.S. troops leading the battle, the Pentagon reported Monday that attacks on U.S. and Iraqi troops and Iraqi civilians jumped sharply in recent months to the highest level since Iraq regained its sovereignty in June 2004.

A purported audio recording by the leader of Iraq’s al Qaeda wing said outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld quit to flee the Iraqi battlefield.

Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, said in the recording posted on the Internet that the group has 12,000 armed fighters and 10,000 others waiting to be equipped to fight U.S. troops in Iraq.

“I swear by God we shall not rest from jihad until we … blow up the filthiest house known as the White House,” he said.

The Democrats’ victory at Tuesday’s Congressional elections were a step in the right direction, the speaker said.

“I tell the lame duck (U.S. administration) do not rush to escape as did your defence minister … stay on the battleground,” the speaker said. “The American people have taken a step in the right path to come out of their predicament … they voted for a level of reason.”

SEIZURES of smuggled radioactive material capable of making a terrorist "dirty bomb" have doubled in the past four years, according to official figures.

Smugglers have been caught trying to traffick dangerous radioactive material more than 300 times since 2002, statistics from the International Atomic Energy Agency show. Most of the incidents are understood to have occurred in Europe.

A dirty bomb combines a conventional explosive, such as dynamite, with radioactive material such as spent nuclear fuel, including highly enriched uranium and plutonium. In most instances, the conventional explosive would kill more bystanders but the dispersion of the radioactive material could make it more lethal overall.

"A dirty bomb is something that needs to be taken seriously," Mr Heinonen said. "We need to be prepared for anything because anything could happen. Terrorists look for the weakest link. We need to be alert."

Al-Qa'ida makes no secret of its desire to obtain a dirty bomb. Its leader in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, last month called for scientists to join it and experiment with radioactive devices for use against coalition troops.

CAIRO, Egypt Sep 28, 2006 (AP)— In a new audio message Thursday, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq called for explosives experts and nuclear scientists to join his group's holy war against the West. "We are in dire need of you," said the man, who identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.

"The field of jihad (holy war) can satisfy your scientific ambitions, and the large American bases (in Iraq) are good places to test your unconventional weapons, whether biological or dirty, as they call them."

He also said that more than 4,000 foreign militants have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 the first apparent acknowledgment from the insurgents about their losses.

In a statement broadcast on national television, Mr. Rubaie said the second-ranking leader of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, Hamid Juma Faris Jouri al-Saeedi, was captured several days ago as he hid among Iraqi families in a residential building. He said Mr. Saeedi was operating near Baquba, north of Baghdad, in the area where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born leader of the militant organization, had sought refuge before he was killed in an American airstrike three months ago.

Mr. Rubaie described Mr. Saeedi as Al Qaeda's deputy commander in Iraq, serving beneath Abu Ayyub al-Masri, who took over the organization after Mr. Zarqawi's death.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Al Qaeda's number two operative in Iraq, Hamed Juma Faris al-Suaidi, has been arrested, the U.S. military and Iraq's national security adviser announced Sunday.

Al-Suaidi, also known as Abu Rana and Abu Humam, is said to be No. 2 in the terrorist group al Qaeda in Iraq, behind Abu Ayyub al-Masri.

Al-Suaidi and one of his followers were captured during a raid Friday that ended in a residential building, Iraqi National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie said at news conference, according to CNN translators.

Hamed Juma Faris al-Suaidi is said to have been "directly responsible" for the man behind the bombing of a Shiite shrine.

BAGHDAD — The man claiming to be the new "al-Qaeda in Iraq" leader is Abu Ayyub al-Masri, an Egyptian explosives expert with ties to al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader, a U.S. military spokesman said Thursday.

Maj.-Gen. William Caldwell said al-Masri apparently is the same person as a man identified on a militant website by the nom de guerre Abu Hamza al-Muhajer. Al-Muhajer claimed to have succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and has vowed to avenge his death.

The Afghanistan-trained Al-Masri was a key figure in the ``al-Qaeda in Iraq" network and has long been responsible for facilitating the movement of foreign fighters from Syria into Baghdad, Caldwell said at a news conference.

He has been a terrorist since 1982, "beginning with his involvement in the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which was led by (Osama bin Laden's deputy Ayman) al-Zawahri," Caldwell said.

The spokesman added that raids in April and May in southern Baghdad recovered material that confirmed his high-level involvement in the facilitation of foreign fighters.

"Al-masri's intimate knowledge of al-Qaeda in Iraq and his close relationship with (al-Zarqawi's) operations will undoubtedly help facilitate and enable them to regain some momentum if, in fact, he is the one that assumes the leadership role," Caldwell said.

He said, however, that al-Masri's ability to exert leadership over al-Qaeda cells remained unclear.

There are other "al-Qaeda senior leadership members and Sunni terrorists" who might try to take over the operations, he said.

Caldwell singled out Abu Abdul-Rahman al-Iraqi, who in the past had been identified as "al-Qaeda in Iraq's" deputy leader in statements by the group, and Abdullah bin Rashid al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Mujahedeen Shura Council — five allied groups in the Sunni Arab-dominated insurgency.
