When the savings and loan industry collapsed, Keating's failed company put taxpayers on the hook for $3.4 billion and more than 20,000 Americans lost their savings. John McCain was reprimanded by the bipartisan Senate Ethics Committee, but the ultimate cost of the crisis to American taxpayers reached more than $120 billion

The Keating scandal is eerily similar to today's credit crisis, where a lack of regulation and cozy relationships between the financial industry and Congress has allowed banks to make risky loans and profit by bending the rules. And in both cases, John McCain's judgment and values have placed him on the wrong side of history

John McCain was accused of improperly aiding his political patron, Charles Keating, chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association. The bipartisan Senate Ethics Committee launched investigations and formally reprimanded Senator McCain for his role in the scandal -- the first such Senator to receive a major party nomination for president.

McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating with federal regulators tasked with preventing banking fraud, and championed legislation to delay regulation of the savings and loan industry -- actions that allowed Keating to continue his fraud at an incredible cost to taxpayers.

Towards the end of last night's Joe Biden/Sarah Palin debate, Joe Biden said this: "All you have to do is to go down Union Street with me in Wilmington and go to Katie's restaurant..."

and realized Biden was referring to the long-closed Katie's Italian restaurant, which is actually two blocks away from Union Street.

For a guy running as an in-touch-with-the-real-people candidate, it's hard to believe he not only referenced a restaurant that has been closed for nearly 20 years, but also got the location wrong!

I just called the owner of Wings to Go, Nate Johnson, who verified that Katie's closed in the late '80s.

"He was a little off," Johnson said of Biden.

Synopsis: Thanks to the infamous "Care Bear Backlash" of the late '80s, by the time 1990 rolled around, anything marketed to kids had to be "edgy." Here, the notoriously family-friendly (read: "square") Nintendo enlists a young Paul Rudd to shake up that wholesome image for their latest product, the "Nintendo Super-Happy, Fun-Time Game Box" (working title).

Bottom Line: Considering Rudd hasn't dropped below four levels of ironic detachment since 1995, his wide-eyed amazement at his surroundings (Trench coats! Smoke machines! SimCity!) seems less than sincere in retrospect. It's not exactly Rudd's fault, either-even to our young, pre-Clueless eyes, this ad stunk of cheese.

Bonus Moment: The cryptic "New Zelda and Football to come" disclaimer at the end of the ad.

The mechanism of these frauds is simplicity itself...

...Take a shaky financial asset and blow up its value

and then sell as much of it as you can.

In the "Savings and Loan Crisis," the instrument was junk bonds.

In the "Tech Bubble" it was Internet stocks.

In the "Credit Crisis" it was individual mortgages collected

into pools and then re-sold to investors.

In a June 19, 2008, appearance on The Colbert Report, Cookie Monster again explained that "Cookies are a sometimes food." He also attempted to eat Stephen Colbert's Peabody Award. Colbert had asked agitatedly why Cookie Monster had "abandoned the pro-cookie agenda" and thus caused fruit to become the favorite snack of American children, according to a study Colbert had heard. Colbert criticized Cookie Monster for not wearing a cookie lapel pin. Cookie Monster also claimed to have "crazy times" during the '70s and '80s. He also referred to himself as "the Robert Downey Jr. of cookies." After eating a cookie to prove he still likes cookies, Cookie Monster asked if the Peabody Award, a round medallion on a small pedestal, was a cookie. When Colbert returned to speak to Cookie Monster at the end of the show, the award had disappeared and Cookie Monster was wiping his mouth with a napkin.^[5]

I have been a long time conservative - a true conservative - and have been horrified by the recent theocratic fascist turn of my beloved Republican Party. I was the Vice-President of the College Republicans in the late 80s at my college.

The Palin pick has absolutely horrified me. For the first time in my life - I donated 1000.00 to a political campaign - that of Senator Obama. Indeed, the donate button on the Obama website was so overwhelmed on his servers last night - it took me till 1:29 AM to get through to donate.

I often wondered in all my years of history courses how the citizens of the Roman Republic or of Nazi Germany let it happen. I do not have to wonder anymore - I am now living through it
