clipper's remarks: In 1893, a group of American expatriates and sugar planters supported by a division of U.S. Marines deposed Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. One year later, the Republic of Hawaii was established as a U.S. protectorate with Hawaiian-born Sanford B. Dole as president. Many in Congress opposed the formal annexation of Hawaii, and it was not until 1898, following the use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the Spanish-American War, that Hawaii's strategic importance became evident and formal annexation was approved. Two years later, Hawaii was organized into a formal U.S. territory. During World War II, Hawaii became firmly ensconced in the American national identity following the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

In March 1959, the U.S. government approved statehood for Hawaii, and in June the Hawaiian people voted by a wide majority to accept admittance into the United States.

The modern United States receives its crowning star when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. The president also issued an order for an American flag featuring 50 stars arranged in staggered rows: five six-star rows and four five-star rows. The new flag became official July 4, 1960.

The first known settlers of the Hawaiian Islands were Polynesian voyagers who arrived sometime in the eighth century. In the early 18th century, American traders came to Hawaii to exploit the islands' sandalwood, which was much valued in China at the time. In the 1830s, the sugar industry was introduced to Hawaii and by the mid 19th century had become well established. American missionaries and planters brought about great changes in Hawaiian political, cultural, economic, and religious life. In 1840, a constitutional monarchy was established, stripping the Hawaiian monarch of much of his authority.

clipper's remarks: The Order of the October Revolution (Russian: Орден Октябрьской Революции, or Orden Oktyabr'skoy Revolyutsii) was instituted on October 31, 1967, in time for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. It was awarded to individuals or groups for services furthering communism or the state, or in enhancing the defences of the Soviet Union. It ranked second amongst the Soviet orders, after the Order of Lenin.

Nicholas II of Russia born Nikolay Alexandrovich Romanov (18 May 1868 – 17 July 1918) was the last Tsar of Russia, King of Poland,[1] and Grand Duke of Finland.

Nicholas II ruled from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. His rule ended with the Russian Revolution of 1917 in which he and his family were imprisoned first in the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, then later the Governor's Mansion in Tobolsk. Finally, at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Nicholas and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks on the night of July 17, 1918.

After the overthrow of the Czar and his government, the people of Russia began their uphill rush toward democracy. The Bolshevik Party worked among the intellectuals, laborers and peasants striving toward the peak. The Party pulled a small and well disciplined organization behind it.

The Party unselfishly led the way to the top.

October, 1917

Once on top, the Party insisted upon assuming the thankless job of ruling, generously waving aside all help.

This is what they celebrate nowadays as the Great October Revolution.

In Hawaii, tattoos are a mark of pride

That's a hot-button issue for many parents. They panic at the thought of their teenager being inked -- scarred! -- for life at a still tender age.

If, however, the question is posed in Hawaii, the parents' reaction may be quite different. In the 50th state, tattoos are part of the culture, having been introduced centuries ago by early voyagers from other Polynesian islands. Today, tattoo parlors are just about as prolific as souvenir shops. The number has increased 16% in just one year, state records show. Tourists, it seems, are returning home not only with the obligatory shell necklaces and pineapples but also with tattoos.

The growing popularity of tattoos is helping to revive native Hawaiian culture, which first Christian missionaries and then politicians tried for decades to erase, Kapu says.

"You've got to remember that a lot of these [cultural] things were forbidden," he says. "The resurgence is great, because people are in dire need of their identity."

Italy has not participated in the contest since 1997 because of the lack of interest from RAI and from the Italians themselves...picture 1958 - Domenico Modugno and Nel blu, dipinto di blu (Volare) - in the US, where it has become commonly known as Volare, and got two Grammy Awards. It is one of few Eurovision songs that has reached #1 at the US singles charts. At the 50th anniversary show "Congratulations" in 2005, it was elected the 2nd best Eurovision entry ever.

Media Downplay Hawaii Uprising, Back Hawaiian Apartheid Bill

Pacific Business News reported that the "protesters" surrounded the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, chained palace gates, posted no-trespassing signs, and told "palace officials that the palace is their rightful seat of government." The PBN story noted that "Only those with Hawaiian blood, as well as news media, were initially allowed onto palace grounds."

The Honolulu Advertiser reported that the "sovereignty group" claimed its actions were "not a protest or demonstration but a reoccupying of its legitimate seat of government." CNN called the occupiers simply a "group of native Hawaiians."

Enjoy green bagels, green water fountains, a green Empire State Building and, of course, green beer, all in honor of the patron saint of Ireland at the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in New York City Monday .

The first St. Patrick's Day Parade in NYC took place 247 years ago, 14 years before the Declaration of Independence. This parade does not allow floats or cars, just marchers.

The parade starts at 44th Street at 11 a.m. and marches up Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th Street. It proceeds past the American Irish Historical Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 83rd Street to 86th Street, where the parade finishes around 5 p.m.

No big celebrations are planned for Oct. 1, the 50th anniversary of the appearance of “In God We Trust” on our paper currency. After all, most Americans barely notice the phrase — until, of course, someone tries to take it away.

In other words, we’re told that “In God We Trust” doesn’t “establish” religion because it isn’t really religious.

It’s worth noting that organized efforts on behalf of state acknowledgements of God intensify during periods of national crisis.

Today, widespread anxiety about everything from a moral breakdown in society to the threat of terrorism has renewed efforts by some religious conservatives to restore what they believe has been lost: a nation that trusts in God.

But if restoring trust in God by promoting “In God We Trust” is the aim, it doesn’t appear to be working. On the contrary, putting God on money has done little more than produce court rulings explaining how “In God We Trust” has been drained of any religious meaning.

Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union's launch, on October 4, 1957, of Sputnik 1, the starting signal for the Space Race and a propaganda coup that Russia's present leaders can only envy.

The launch of the world's first man-made satellite, a silvery orb with four frond-like antennae and two radio transmitters, was at first obscure.

The official announcement was buried in leaden prose in the corner of a Pravda newspaper front page, the identity of Sputnik's creator kept a state secret.

But soon awed headlines in Western newspapers alerted Moscow to the true propaganda potential of Sputnik and as more space launches took place, carrying dogs and then the first spaceman, Yury Gagarin, the world was captivated by the achievement.

The United States was caught badly off balance, flailing in its response as the Soviets launched a second satellite less than a month later, carrying Laika the dog, who was to die within hours.

Bill Clinton hailed the courage of the Little Rock Nine

Ex-US President Bill Clinton is in his home state of Arkansas to mark the 50th anniversary of the integration crisis at Little Rock Central High School.

The crisis saw a three week stand-off between a group of nine black students and an angry mob who wanted to stop them attending the all-white school.

The event became a seminal moment in the civil rights struggle in the US.

The case there of jailed black high school children, with its allegations of unequal racially-based justice, has for some brought back memories of those earlier, less enlightened times being remembered in Little Rock, our correspondent adds.

According to their research, the Palestinians fled their villages not in response to a call from Arab leaders but because of a concerted campaign of terror—including massacres and rape—perpetrated by military units of the newly declared Israeli state.

June 13, 2007 -- A storied Park Avenue church has filed a $1 million suit against Con Edison, charging the power company ruined its famed giant organ.

The suit says St. Bartholomew's Church "owns and operates an Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ consisting of 12,422 pipes. "The pipe organ is the largest organ in the city, the second largest pipe organ in the state and the fifth largest pipe organ in the Western Hemisphere" - and it hasn't worked right since June 30, 2004.

That's when the church at 50th Street says its representatives "noted an extensive, extraordinary amount of steam escaping from openings in the street and sidewalk areas adjacent to the church," and, knowing the utility's steam line branches off into the church's basement, called Con Ed for help, the suit says.

Con Ed didn't respond to the complaints, and soon after, church reps "and its organ curator began to experience and observe problems and malfunctions in the pipe organ."
