For its "Pledge of Allegiance video" on Tuesday night, the Republican National Convention used stock footage of a staged military funeral, along with actors dressed as soldiers and sailors. CBS has the story:

It was a video that was supposed to elicit soaring patriotism and real emotions about the Pledge of Allegiance. But to do that, it used fake soldiers and a staged military funeral instead of the real thing.

CBS News found that the footage of the 'funeral' and soldiers is what is called 'stock' footage. The soldiers were actors and the funeral scene was from a one-day film shoot, produced in June. No real soldiers were used during production.

The footage, sold by stock-film house Getty Images was produced by a commercial filmmaker in Chicago. Both Getty and the production company, Mr. Big Films, confirmed that the footage was shot on spec and sold to the Republican National Committee.

As noted by RockRichard yesterday, U.S. forces launched a ground attack inside Pakistan for the "first" time--at least officially. Not surprisingly, the Pakistani government is none too happy about this. But despite the escalation in this increasingly violent theater, no one speaking at the Republican National Convention felt it necessary to even mention Afghanistan or Pakistan last night. The same thing happened on Tuesday night when George W. Bush, Joe Lieberman, and Fred Thompson all failed to utter the words "Afghanistan" or "Pakistan" a single time.

Colonel Joe noticed. I noticed it. And lots of other military types--especially those tasked with fighting in that theater--noticed the obvious (and likely deliberate) oversight.

Maybe if Afghanistan and Pakistan were closer to Alaska--like Russia--it would cause concern for those attending the Republican National Convention.

A federal judge has refused to consider bail for the estranged husband of a woman who was stabbed to death in a parking garage in upscale Century City.

James Fayed of Moorpark is charged with operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. But a Los Angeles federal judge today refused to review his no-bail status in the case, saying he was concerned that Fayed eventually might be charged with his wife's murder.

WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department is putting the finishing touches to a plan designed to shore up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, according to people familiar with the matter, a move that would essentially result in a government takeover of the mortgage giants.

The plan is expected to involve putting the two companies into the conservatorship of their regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said several people familiar with the matter. That would mean the government would take the reins of the companies, at least temporarily.

It is also expected to involve the government injecting capital into Fannie and Freddie. That could happen gradually on a quarter-by-quarter basis, rather than in a single move, one person familiar with the matter said.

An announcement could come as early as this weekend. Some details are still being worked out, and terms of the arrangement could change.

Oprah Winfrey, who exerts a disturbing influence over people who spend their days vegetating in front of the television, has straightened out the story on her refusal to have Sarah Palin on her show:

Oprah's statement:

The item in today's Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.

After the campaign is over, Vice President Palin will be a little busy. But it's nice to know the Obama-hyping Oprah has too much integrity to allow her show to be corrupted by crass politics. She also blocked an appearance by Clarence Thomas.
