A polymer material was given a thin black coating and immersed in water. When the central polymer absorbs water and expands, the black coating is strained and buckles into this beautiful pattern of wrinkles. Ye Jin Eun and Douglas B. This one-sided surface was first parametrized correctly by Bernard Morin. The animation looks like it’s turning inside-out, although technically that’s impossible because it only has one side! Robert Bryant told me that the parameters (p,q) = (0,1) give this Willmore immersion of RP² a trilateral symmetry. The parameters (p,q) = (1,0) should give bilateral symmetry. Mars rover Opportunity is leaving Victoria Crater, and it's exiting the way it came in. Put on your 3D glasses and behold the new tracks beside the old:

Graphic artist Patrick Vantuyne created the anaglyph by combining left- and right-eye images from Opportunity's navigation camera.

"Making stereo images of Mars has become almost routine for me, but it's still a thrill to see something new in 3D, which is hardly visible in a single picture," says Vantuyne. As an example, he notes the clouds in the upper-right corner of the anaglyph. Gaze for a while into the sky and watch the fluff emerge: full-size image.

Heightmap Terrain Rendering

We will begin with the simple example of rendering terrain using heightmaps. A heightmap is a grayscale image, containing the heights of the terrain. The shade of gray that a pixel has determines the height of the terrain at that point, white being the highest, and black being the lowest. When using floating point textures, the principle is the same. Each pixel contains a floating point value, 0.0f being the lowest height, and 1.0f being the highest. Building the terrain mesh from the heightmap texture could be easily done without using vertex textures, by reading the heights at loading time, when building the vertex buffer. As this operation is done only once (at loading) and not at every frame ( in the vertex shader), using vertex textures does not have any performance gains for this particular case. However, this is the simplest and most clear example that shows how Vertex Texture Fetch is used.

The Japanese lunar mission SELENE (Selenological and Engineering Explorer), also known as "Kaguya" has imaged the "halo" left behind in the lunar surface from Apollo 15's lunar module engine exhaust plume. This is the first time a mission after the Apollo Program has detected such a feature.

Currently the environment can be walked through by using the interface of the VRML viewer, using either the mouse or the keyboard arrows.
