Teachers Pack Heat In Tiny Texas School

HARROLD, Texas — A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

Superintendent David Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff's office, leaving students and teachers without protection. He said the district's lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target.

"The naysayers think (a shooting) won't happen here. If something were to happen here, I'd much rather be calling a parent to tell them that their child is OK because we were able to protect them," Thweatt said.

Extra terrestrial rock sells for £18,000

Extra terrestrial material has always been popular with science enthusiasts but who would have thought someone would pay £18,000 for a rock the size of a pineapple?

The meteorite, which weighs in at 28 pounds, has sold for $36,000 (£18,287) in Los Angeles.

The rock was found in Arizona in 2004 and is believed to be the largest ever found in that area.

I am sick and tired of the Congress' refusal to address the illegal immigration problem.

The American people have been writing, faxing, phoning, yelling, and protesting for Congress to fix our nation's illegal immigration problem and you and your colleagues have refused to do so.

What makes it even worse is that when a program is proven successful its funding is pulled. The 287(g) program worked by allowing local and state law enforcement agencies determine the legality of those who they suspect of being in this country illegally. Congress, in its infinite wisdom, decided to de-fund the program.

I am tired of calling and faxing and shouting. I, along with the rest of the American people, want something done now. Fix the problem. You can start by funding current programs that work!

Weekend Edition Sunday, June 22, 2008 · Copulation calls — the sounds made during sex — seem to help female primates attract as many sex partners as possible. As a survival strategy, it's a good way for a species to ensure that its genes are passed on. But a team of researchers recently discovered that female chimpanzees tend to be more discreet.

Simon Townsend, a scientist with Scotland's University of St. Andrews, was studying chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest in western Uganda when he noticed that, unlike other primates, female chimps did not always produce a copulation call. So Townsend decided to do a bit more research.

Over a period of several months, he documented seven females involved in 287 sexual encounters. Interestingly, the females made their copulation call only about one-third of the time. Townsend realized that the chimps were suppressing copulation calls when a high-ranking female was nearby.

Enter RepairPal, a new site launching publicly today where you can get price estimates for different parts and repair jobs for your car. You enter your car year, model, and mileage, and it spits out price ranges for your zip code. For instance, replacing the front brake pads on a BMW in New York City should cost between $158 and $310.

Not sure where to take your car? There is also a directory of 287,000 local mechanics, with each shop placed onto a Google Map. Members can rate each mechanic. Once a repair is completed, you can keep an online service record at RepairPal. It is kind of like keeping your electronic medical record at Google Health, but it’s for your car.

The Archimedes Codex unpeeled by modern technological sleuthing

This is about an ancient book called The Archimedes Codex, bought for $2.2 million in October, 1998, at an auction in New York City by an anonymous collector who sent it to the Walters Art Museum, here to be restored, conserved, and probed for its content. It was thought to contain mathematical theses conceived by the genius of Syracuse (287-212 BC), whose name it bears, ideas not found anywhere else in the world.

The Walters faced a daunting task: what arrived was a clump of folios, crushed, torn, punctured by worm holes, in the inflexible grip of old carpenter's glue, charred at its edges, and covered with mold and water stains.

It's a miracle it still exists.

The amendment would create a deficit-neutral reserve fund that fully covers completion of the 700-mile border fence and at least 6,000 National Guard troops at the border. SAVE Act Discharge Petition Filed, Gaining Momentum

(March 19) Supporters of the enforcement-only SAVE Act (Secure America with Verification Enforcement; H.R. 4088) have already gained more than two-thirds of the signers needed to force a vote in the U.S. House. If the petition collects 218 House signatures, a simple majority, the bill can bypass the committee process and be placed on the House floor for a vote, regardless of any objections by Democratic leaders.

I wonder in which country one would accept a mass of 14,200 registered rape cases in two years, in one province only. Even worse: of which only 287 cases were taken to court. No-one would accept this, right? Right?

Well, this is the case in South Kivu, a province in Eastern DRC (Congo), according to the UN Human Rights Council. (Full)
