Report: 237 millionaires in Congress

But CRP’s analysis suggests that some lawmakers did well for themselves between 2007 and 2008, even as many Americans lost jobs and saw their savings and their home values plummet.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) gained about $9.2 million. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) gained about $3 million, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) had an estimated $2.6 million gain, and Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) gained about $2.8 million.

Some lawmakers have profited from investments in companies that have received federal bailouts; dozens of lawmakers are invested in Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America.
Vice President Joe Biden has often tagged himself as an original blue collar man. The CRP backs him up, putting his net worth at just $27,000.

Talk about bad timing.

As Washington reels from the news of 10.2 percent unemployment, the Center for Responsive Politics is out with a new report describing the wealth of members of Congress.

Among the highlights: Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall.

the co-founder of Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls (BAD RAP), an East Bay organization with a national reputation for rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls. They rehabbed and cared for many of the dogs seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels after his arrest in April of 2007.

It was a sweltering day in September of 2007, and Reynolds was in Virginia to evaluate the 49 pit bulls found alive on Vicks' property. A federal agent who had been at the scene when the property was searched was driving her to the various facilities holding the dogs, and they got to talking about what the investigation had turned up.

"The details that got to me then and stay with me today involve the swimming pool that was used to kill some of the dogs," Reynolds wrote on her blog.

What does it take to get me out of bed at the abominable hour of 4 AM? Comet Lulin, that's what! I've been hearing some good reports about it, and saw a fantastic photo of it by Karzaman Ahmad at Spaceweather.com. According to Tony Cook (Tonk) at CloudyNights, the comet's orbital plane is closely aligned with ours and will result in a rather prolonged period of interesting tail geometry. The result is a potentially long-lived anti-tail appearance as the ion tail and dust tail fan out from either side of the comet.

Patriot-News investigative reporter Pete Shellem freed a number of innocent people from prisonPete Shellem, a longtime Patriot-News reporter who specialized in investigating questionable convictions, died unexpectedly over the weekend.

Since 1998, Shellem, 49, has written about the suspect convictions of Patty Carbone, Steven Crawford, Barry Laughman and David Gladden.

All were serving life sentences for murder before Shellem investigated their cases. Today, all four are free.

From 1994 to 1996, Shellem headed a series of stories about justice being sold for campaign contributions in the office of then-Pennsylvania Attorney General Ernie Preate Jr.

Health officials are investigating how a surgeon at Rhode Island Hospital mistakenly operated on the wrong part of a patient's hand, the hospital's fifth wrong-site surgery since 2007

Hospital President Timothy Babineau said in a letter that the mistake Thursday happened on a patient scheduled for surgery on two fingers. A joint on one finger underwent a procedure meant for another.

Babineau said the surgery was then performed on the correct finger and the patient was discharged.

The hospital has not released the names of the patient or surgeon involved.

Hospital officials are investigating what went wrong, as is the state Department of Health.

Rhode Island Hospital was fined $50,000 after three brain surgeons operated on the wrong side of a patient's head in 2007.
