Summerall Hall: This building was used as the post hospital from 1888 to 1948. In 1948, the building was remodeled and became the post headquarters. In 1956 it was named in honor of Gen. Charles Summerall, who commanded of the 1st Infantry Division three times: July-Oct. 1918; Sept. 1919 to April 1920; and July 1920-21. He later became the army’s Chief of Staff.

Mummified remains from 1948 plane crash identified

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Nine years of sleuthing, advanced DNA science and cutting-edge forensic techniques have finally put a name to a mummified hand and arm found in an Alaska glacier.

The remains belong to Francis Joseph Van Zandt, a 36-year-old merchant marine from Roanoke, Va., who was on a plane rumored to contain a cargo of gold when it smashed into the side of a mountain 60 years ago. Thirty people died in the crash.

"This is the oldest identification of fingerprints by post-mortem remains," said latent fingerprint expert Mike Grimm Sr., during a teleconference Friday, during which the two pilots who found the remains, genetic scientists and genealogists talked about the discovery.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Arenberg Jean and Ted Arenberg celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering at Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena. The couple met as students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They married June 19,1948,in Chicago. The Arenbergs have six children: Robert Arenberg of Brooklyn,N.Y.; Thomas (Diane) Arenberg of Mequon,Wis.; Dr. Mary (Dr. George Schroeder) Arenberg of Plymouth,Wis.; James (Kim) Arenberg of Farmington,Minn.; Michael Arenberg of West Bend,Wis.; Dr. Douglas (Dr. Karen Chapel) Arenberg of Northville,Mich. They have eight grandchildren: Liz,Molly,Sally,Carl,Emma,Nicholas,Clark and Brett. After graduation,Jean taught for two years in Barrington,and Ted was employed with Arthur Andersen for 38 years.

The story of Babe Ruth's bittersweet farewell at Yankee Stadium has been part of sports lore for generations. Shockingly stooped and frail, the slugger came to the Bronx ballpark on June 13, 1948, to put on the pinstriped uniform a last time and hear the roar of the faithful once more.

He died only two months later, on August 16, at age 53, by most accounts of throat cancer, brought on at least in part by a well-chronicled fondness for tobacco and liquor. But that's all wrong, says a Westchester County, N.Y., dentist with a passion for baseball history. And he's trying to set the record straight.

Maloney uncovered little-known information about the experimental treatment that the doomed baseball titan agreed to take part in, the kindness Ruth showed toward medical staff during his difficult final days and the rare form of cancer he actually died from, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (it causes less than 1 percent of the cancer deaths in the U.S. today).

Jews can live in Mexico City, Bangkok, St. Louis, and any city in the world (except in Saudi Arabia) -- but the PA wants to forbid Jews from living in the very cradle of Judaism.

The only period in the last 3,000 years without a continued Jewish presence in the West Bank was the 19 years between 1948-1967 when the Jordanian government banned Jews from living there.

There would be no refugee problem if seven Arab nations had not attacked Israel upon its inception in 1948.

800,000 Jewish refugees were expelled from Arab countries in 1948, but their descendents are normalized today because they were absorbed by Israel and other countries.

The real PLO invented the idea of skyjackings in 1970, and instilled fear in travelers across the world.

The very formula "Land for Peace" indicates that Arabs compromise for what they want most -- land, while Israel compromises for what it wants most -- peace.

Iconic Stone Arch Collapses In Utah

One of the largest and most photographed arches in Arches National Park has collapsed.

Paul Henderson, the park's chief of interpretation, said Wall Arch collapsed sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

The arch is along Devils Garden Trail, one of the most popular in the park. For years, the arch has been a favorite stopping point for photographers.

Henderson said the arch was claimed by forces that will eventually destroy others in the park: gravity and erosion.

He said it's the first collapse of a major arch in the park since nearby Landscape Arch fell in 1991. No one has reported seeing it fall.

The arch, first reported and named in 1948, was more than 33 feet tall and 71 feet across. It ranked 12th in size among the park's estimated 2,000 arches.
