The Ditherer has disappeared. In his place, a new “Master of the Universe”

As “novices” such as Tory leader David Cameron tremble on the sideline, Gordon

We must all wish him well. Our jobs, savings, pensions — and possibly even the

For we are Labour's avante-garde, and we were educated.
By tax adjustments we have planned to institute the Promised Land
And just to show we're still sincere, we sing The Red Flag once a year

It's one step forward, one step back. Our dance is devilish daring
A leftward shuffle, a rightward tack, then pause to take our bearings.
We'll reform the country bit by bit, so nobody will notice it
Then ever after, never fear, we'll sing The Red Flag once a year

So vote for us, and not for them, we're just as true to NATO,

The announcement of the takeover of HBOS by Lloyds TSB raises a number of concerns. Chief among these must be the threat of job losses.

It was estimated that the merger between Halifax and the Bank of Scotland cost 6000 jobs but this new takeover has the potential to surpass that level. This will also have an impact in many local high streets as branches are closed down, leaving fewer options for customers.

It was also clear to all after the Northern Rock fiasco that there was a lack of regulation in the financial markets which the Labour government has simply failed to address.

However, in contrast to his usual dithering, it now appears that
Gordon Brown has been pushing to remove all the normal monopolies safeguards to allow this takeover
to happen, despite the obvious
threats to jobs in Scotland.

Is this another example of the

They held the health service to account and had strong local loyalty. Many NHS innovations were pioneered by CHCs - advocacy, surveys, community development projects, patient support groups. They had statutory powers to obtain information, and to visit hospitals and other institutions, and had access to health authorities and their senior officers. CHCs were not afraid to criticise government policies but - while useful to Labour in opposition - they were a potential obstacle to the implementation of the new government's reforms. In 1997 moves began to get rid of them. CHCs were abolished, not without a struggle, in 2003, and replaced by a series of increasingly weak structures.

Tags: uk, governement, labour, mendacity, authoritarianism,

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/sep/02/health.nhs?gusrc=rss&feed=uknews</clipSource>

Sep 1, 2008: Labor / Labour Day (USA, Canada)

clipped by: egsnyder
clipper's remarks: USA
On June 29, 1894, the U.S. Congress voted Labor Day as a National Holiday to honor working people's contribution of labour. The day is celebrated with parades and speeches.

CANADA
Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to April 14, 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union's strike for a 58-hour work-week.[2] The Toronto Trades Assembly (TTA) called its 27 unions to demonstrate in support of the Typographical Union who had been on strike since March 25.[2] George Brown, Canadian politician and editor of the Toronto Globe hit back at his striking employees, pressing police to charge the Typographical Union with "conspiracy."[2] Although the laws criminalizing union activity were outdated and had already been abolished in Great Britain, they were still on books in Canada and police arrested 24 leaders of the Typographical Union. The Provisional IRA was meant to have decommissioned its stockpiles of
weaponry in what had proved to be the most difficult part of the peace
process to accomplish, with an independent group led by the retired Canadian
General John de Chastelain overseeing the operation. The decommissioning
process was formally concluded in 2005.

The admission by the police that Semtex was used confirms a long-held
suspicion that the Provisionals never surrendered all their weaponry and
suggests that some of its members are now actively assisting the dissidents
– in groups such as the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA – or have crossed
over into their ranks, taking with them resources previously controlled and
held by PIRA.

He made me want to vomit. Had his 9 years service not taught him to think for himself? From that performance it appears very unlikely.
The debate was an insult to intelligent oratory . It culminated in the heroic Major of the Conservative Party giving the worst two minute speech ever heard. The soporific mutterings were almost intelligible because the Chambers seemed to be engrossed in the fact that they may get more expenses as fresh legislation had just been introduced, requiring the Council to form a fresh licensing committee. If you think Westminster stinks, take a night off and go and visit your local council chamber. The great pity is that too few people attend these public events. You can also speak, if you apply to do so. try it, you cannot do a

Clip Source: www.epolitix.com

New Labour has 'run its course', says senior MP

A senior Labour backbencher has said New Labour has "run its course" and that Gordon Brown must show "strength, will and purpose" to renew the government.

In an interview with ePolitix.com, schools committee chairman Barry Sheerman also said that he "very much doubted" that the embattled prime minister would face a leadership challenge.

Tags: labour, debate, 12regimentra

<clipSource>http://www.epolitix.com/latestnews/article-detail/newsarticle/new-labour-has-run-its-course-says-senior-mp/</clipSource>

Wikipedia and the art of censorship

clipped by: cheapogroovo

Clip Source: www.independent.co.uk

Now a website designed to monitor editorial changes made on Wikipedia has found thousands of self-serving edits and traced them to their original source.
