Police raid "baby farm" in Nigeria

In May, a Nigerian woman was jailed in the UK for trying to smuggle a baby into the country in order to get on the list for a council flat.

Police have not been able to trace the child's real parents.

Police have raided a private hospital in Nigeria where they suspect new-born babies were being sold to traffickers.

Police found the hospital in the south-eastern town of Enugu, when a 17-year-old girl escaped.

Four people - two nurses and the hospital's owners - have been arrested in connection with the "baby farm", police said.

Seven pregnant young women discovered in the hospital during the raid are now in the care of the state government.

State police commissioner Sani Magaji told the BBC Hausa service that a 17-year-old who was days away from giving birth had escaped from the hospital.

The women, according to the police, had spent up to six months in the hospital, waiting to give birth.

Their babies would be sold for as little as 15,000 naira ($127, £72), the police said.

It is suspected the babies were to be sold to traffickers who sell children into forced labour or prostitution.

Poor, unmarried women face tough choices if they get pregnant in Nigeria.

Hague accused Brown of "seeking to make a virtue of the government's lack of any new purpose, direction, or ideas".

"According to Gordon Brown, however abysmal the performance of the British government under his leadership, no one else in the country could possibly do any better," he said.

Indian govt backs staff who killed boss

Oscar Fernandes had defended former employees of car parts maker Graziano Transmissioni who attacked and killed chief executive Lalit Kishore Chaudhary at the Italian firm's offices near New Delhi earlier this week.

India's labour minister apologised for expressing his support for sacked workers who beat their former boss to death.

Chaudhary, a father with one son, was hit on the head with either a stick or an iron rod and was declared dead on arrival at hospital, police said.

Fernandes had said the attack "should serve as a warning for management."

"Workers should be dealt with with compassion," he had told reporters. "The workers should not be pushed so hard."

But he retracted his comments on Wednesday after they were greeted with shock by many Indians.

Chaudhary, 47, died of head injuries after being attacked by more than a hundred workers who had been sacked a few months ago.

Gordon Brown yesterday outlined a fresh philosophy to revive his fortunes when he declared that he would champion a "new settlement for new times".

In a personal address, in which he admitted a mistake in abolishing the 10p starting rate of tax, the prime minister said he was best placed to take Britain through the greatest upheaval since the Industrial Revolution and set out the idea of "a new settlement for new times. A fair Britain for the new age".

The prime minister - who spoke of his lifelong passion for the NHS being inspired by a "great surgeon and great nurses" who saved his sight after a rugby accident as a teenager - outlined a series of policies which will see the government legislate to enshrine the abolition of child poverty in law, abolish prescription charges for people battling cancer and abolish charges for people suffering long-term conditions.

The announcement of the takeover of HBOS by Lloyds TSB raises a number of concerns. Chief among these must be the threat of job losses.

It was estimated that the merger between Halifax and the Bank of Scotland cost 6000 jobs but this new takeover has the potential to surpass that level. This will also have an impact in many local high streets as branches are closed down, leaving fewer options for customers.

It was also clear to all after the Northern Rock fiasco that there was a lack of regulation in the financial markets which the Labour government has simply failed to address.

However, in contrast to his usual dithering, it now appears that Gordon Brown has been pushing to remove all the normal monopolies safeguards to allow this takeover to happen, despite the obvious threats to jobs in Scotland.

Is this another example of the "Union dividend"?

A $100 billion US government investment over two years could create 2 million "green" jobs in such industrial sectors as steel and construction, according to environmental and labour groups.

"From the point of view of the steelworkers union, the view is quite simple, that an energy-efficient green economy creates jobs, and it can create jobs in America," says Leo Gerard, international president of United Steelworkers.

He said the US move towards wind power has already prompted the reopening of two struggling steel mills that are now making steel plate for use in new windmills.

Beyond that, the retrofitting of old, energy-inefficient buildings would create jobs for steelworkers, glassmakers and those who manufacture heating and cooling systems, says Gerard.

When Labour came to power community health councils had been in place for more than 20 years. They held the health service to account and had strong local loyalty. Many NHS innovations were pioneered by CHCs - advocacy, surveys, community development projects, patient support groups. They had statutory powers to obtain information, and to visit hospitals and other institutions, and had access to health authorities and their senior officers. CHCs were not afraid to criticise government policies but - while useful to Labour in opposition - they were a potential obstacle to the implementation of the new government's reforms. In 1997 moves began to get rid of them. CHCs were abolished, not without a struggle, in 2003, and replaced by a series of increasingly weak structures.

'IRA Semtex' used in Northern Ireland attack

The Provisional IRA was meant to have decommissioned its stockpiles of weaponry in what had proved to be the most difficult part of the peace process to accomplish, with an independent group led by the retired Canadian General John de Chastelain overseeing the operation. The decommissioning process was formally concluded in 2005.

The admission by the police that Semtex was used confirms a long-held suspicion that the Provisionals never surrendered all their weaponry and suggests that some of its members are now actively assisting the dissidents – in groups such as the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA – or have crossed over into their ranks, taking with them resources previously controlled and held by PIRA.

clipper's remarks: The only person I have heard eulogising over this pathetic British Government was a former artilleryman, a Labour Councillor on Blackpool's council, in a so-called debate on selecting 12 Rgt RA as Blackpool's adopted regiment. He made me want to vomit. Had his 9 years service not taught him to think for himself? From that performance it appears very unlikely.
The debate was an insult to intelligent oratory . It culminated in the heroic Major of the Conservative Party giving the worst two minute speech ever heard. The soporific mutterings were almost intelligible because the Chambers seemed to be engrossed in the fact that they may get more expenses as fresh legislation had just been introduced, requiring the Council to form a fresh licensing committee. If you think Westminster stinks, take a night off and go and visit your local council chamber. The great pity is that too few people attend these public events. Now a website designed to monitor editorial changes made on Wikipedia has found thousands of self-serving edits and traced them to their original source. It has turned out to be hugely embarrassing for armies of political spin doctors and corproate revisionists who believed their censorial interventions had gone unnoticed.

Some of the guilty parties identified by the website, such as the Labour Party, the CIA, Republican Party and the Church of Scientology, are well-known for their obsession with PR. But others, such as the Anglican and Catholic churches or even the obscurely titled Perro de Presa Canario Dog Breeders Association of America, are new to the dark arts of spin.

The website, Wikiscanner, was designed by Virgil Griffith, a graduate student from the California Institute of Technology, who downloaded the entire encyclopaedia, isolating the internet-based records of anonymous changes and IP addresses.
