I couldn’t agree more. The symbols of patriotism — bumper stickers and those flags the size of baseball fields — have taken the place of the hard work and sacrifice required to keep a great nation great.

There are signs galore of the nation’s turn for the worse. We are fighting a debilitating war in Iraq without any idea of how to pay for it — or how to end it. No one has any real idea about how to cope with the devastating energy crisis, or how to turn the economy around.

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — Early last month, Jeanne Fair, 62, got her first hot meals delivered to her home in this lake town in the sparsely populated southwestern part of the state. Then after two deliveries the meals stopped because gas prices had made the delivery too expensive.

“They called and said I was outside of the delivery area,” said Mrs. Fair, who is homebound and has not been able to use her left arm since a stroke in 1997.

Faced with soaring gasoline prices, agencies around the country that provide services to the elderly say they are having to cut back on programs like Meals on Wheels, transportation assistance and home care, especially in rural areas that depend on volunteers who provide their own gas

But older poor people and those who are homebound are doubly squeezed by rising gas and food prices, because they rely not just on social service agencies, but also on volunteers.

Early next week the US Senate will vote on an extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, with a few small amendments intended to immunize telecommunications corporations that assisted our government in the warrantless and illegal wiretapping it has grown to love.

That such a gutting of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution even made it out of committee is yet another stain on the gutless and seemingly powerless Democratic majority in both houses of Congress.

That a majority on both sides of the aisle - not least of them the presumptive nominees for president of both political parties - intend to vote for such a violation of Americans' right to privacy and of the sanctity of their personal communications is a stunning surrender to those who want us to live in fear forever.

U.S. deserter wins appeal in fight for refugee status

The Immigration and Refugee Board was wrong when it decided that an American deserter couldn't claim refugee status in Canada because the military transgressions he was evading weren't severe enough to be war crimes or crimes against humanity, the Federal Court ruled yesterday.

The judgment lowers one of the bars that the recent wave of American deserters need to clear when they seek asylum in Canada.

It said that dodging orders that are "contrary to the basic rules or norms of human conduct" is enough grounds to apply for refugee protection.

"Military action which systematically degrades, abuses or humiliates either combatants or non-combatants is capable of supporting a refugee claim where that is the proven reason for refusing to serve," wrote Mr. Justice Robert Barnes, who is also a court-martial appellate judge.

Charlottetown -- The African Union's suggestion of a government of national unity in Zimbabwe is absurd (The 'Zimbabwean Way' Tars All Of Africa - July 4). Robert Mugabe stole the presidential election from Morgan Tsvangirai through murder, thuggery and terror. Why should the opposition want to co-operate with such a man?

The AU solution is the equivalent of a police officer asking a homeowner whose home has been ransacked to let the robber keep half his loot.

Mother of girl with swastika wants children back

Manitoba Child and Family services was in court Monday to argue for permanent guardianship of a girl and boy, after the girl was sent to school sporting a swastika -- a symbol typically associated with racially-motivated hate groups.

The children's mother denies she has done anything wrong.

"I think I'm a pretty good mother. I've raised my children to have pride in themselves. That's all I've ever done." she told CTV News, as she sat beneath a banner with the slogan "White Pride Worldwide."

Canadian woman's accent changes after stroke

Doctors and scientists say they will continue to monitor an Ontario woman who developed an Atlantic Canadian accent after suffering a stroke.

Two years ago Dore, went to the hospital suffering from many common signs of a stroke. She suffered partial paralysis and she had trouble speaking.

Therapy has helped her deal with many of the stroke's initial effects -- but what has remained is one of the stroke's strangest outcomes: it left her with a Newfoundland accent.

That wouldn't be out of the ordinary, if she was from the province. But the 50-year-old Windsor, Ont. woman told doctors she had never visited the region and didn't have relatives there.

She had no idea why her southern Ontario accent had suddenly transformed into one more at home in Atlantic Canada.

"I can remember it happened from the very first day," Dore told CTV News. "As soon as I had the stroke, my voice changed."
