Amidst new revelations of data manipulation by scientists hoping to 'prove' global warming, the infamous 'Gore Effect' has socked Copenhagen. One intrepid warmist reports that temperatures are hovering just above zero.

It's so cold that the media center, depicted above, requires that reporters bundle themselves up while inside.

clipper's remarks: The reason for the apparent paradox—fresh water lakes in the heart of the desert—is that fresh water from a very large aquifer reaches the surface in the Ounianga Depression. The aquifer is large enough to keep supplying the small lakes with water despite the high evaporation rate. Mats of floating reeds also reduce the evaporation in places. The lakes form a hydrological system that is unique in the Sahara Desert.

The aquifer was charged with fresh water and the original lake evolved during the African Humid Period (about 14,800 to 5,500 years ago), when the West African summer monsoon was stronger than it is today. Associated southerly winds brought Atlantic moisture well north of modern limits, producing sufficient rainfall in the central Sahara to foster an almost complete savanna vegetation cover.

one of the largest of a series of ten mostly fresh water lakes in the Ounianga Basin in the heart of the Sahara Desert of northeastern Chad. The lakes are remnants of a single large lake, probably tens of kilometers long, that once occupied this remote area approximately 14,800 to 5,500 years ago. As the climate dried out during the subsequent millennia, the lake shrank, and large, wind-driven sand dunes invaded the original depression, dividing it into several smaller basins.

The area shown in this image is approximately 11 by 9 kilometers. The lakes’ dark surfaces are almost completely segregated by linear, orange sand dunes that stream into the depression from the northeast. The almost-year-round northeast winds and cloudless skies make for very high evaporation rates; an evaporation rate of more than 6 meters per year has been measured in one of the nearby lakes. Despite this, only one of the ten lakes is saline.

A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled.

The phenomenon began when what appeared to be a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain. It stopped mid-air, then began to circulate.

Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to twelve minutes before disappearing completely.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with telephone calls after the light storm - which astronomers have said did not appear to have been connected to the aurora, or Northern Lights, so common in that area of the world.

Fred Hansen, from Bø in Vesterålen, described the sight as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it again.'

'It spun and exploded in the sky,' Totto Eriksen from Tromsø told VG Nett.

Bomb plot leader's friends convicted of terror offences

Three friends of the leader of the airline bomb plot were convicted yesterday of terrorist offences connected to the plan to commit mass murder in the skies.

Adam Khatib, 22, was found guilty of conspiring with Abdulla Ahmed Ali to detonate suicide bombs on board transatlantic airliners flying from London to the US and Canada.

A jury at Woolwich Crown Court also found Nabeel Hussain, 25, guilty of acts preparatory to terrorism and convicted Mohammed Shamin Uddin, 39, of possessing a document likely to be useful to terrorists.

The three men were convicted at the end of an eight-week trial. They will be sentenced today. The prosecution said that they had helped Ali and his terror cell as they prepared for their suicide mission. The plot was thwarted in August 2006 after intensive surveillance by the police and intelligence services, as plans for the attacks were being finalised.

LOS ANGELES – Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend is suing the actor and his former business manager, claiming she is owed more than $13 million and a house the actor promised her.

Christina Fulton, who is the mother of Cage's adult son, Weston, sued the Oscar-winner in Los Angeles on Tuesday. She claims Cage promised her a home in Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood, but that she has now been ordered to leave the property.

Cage has given her far more than the $6,000 per month he was required to pay her under a court order. Cage has paid $3 million per year on behalf of Fulton in recent years

Fulton and Cage's son was born in 1990, and the couple split about four years later,

Cage is known for his dramatic roles in films such as "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Adaptation" as well as action turns in "The Rock" and "Con Air."

"The recent 'ClimateGate' revelations coming out of the UK University of East Anglia are but the tip of a giant iceberg of a well organized international climate warming conspiracy that has been gathering momentum for the last 25 years," said Colorado State University's William Gray.

Gray was referring to e-mails and other information obtained by a hacker and posted on a Russian web server that included interactions among the world's most influential climate-change scientists.

SYDNEY (AFP) – A monster iceberg has been spotted drifting towards Australia in what scientists Wednesday called a once-in-a-century event.

Young said the iceberg measured about 140 square kilometres (54 square miles).

He said the "very, very big" iceberg was originally about 400 square kilometres but then split into two smaller pieces.

"This one has survived in the open ocean for about a year," he said. "In that time it's slowly been coming up to the north and north east in the general direction of Western Australia."

Australian glaciologist Neal Young pinpointed the slab, which is some 19 kilometres (12 miles) long, about 1,700 kilometres south of the country, using satellite imagery.

Christian Fronczek doesn’t want anything for his birthday.

Just like last year, the Aliso Viejo boy will be donating all his gifts to San Clemente Military Family Outreach. The nonprofit will then distribute the gifts to Camp Pendleton families for Christmas.

“I decided to choose a military-based organization because they do so much fighting for our country,” Fronczek said. “I just have so much stuff. I wanted to give back to them so their families could have presents and have a good Christmas.”

Fronczek’s gift comes as other community members also are helping military families, many of whom live below the poverty line. The holidays and the slumping economy have increased calls for help to San Clemente Military Family Outreach, the group says.

“I feel that their families need hope. I feel like they need to know that someone cares for them,” said Fronczek, who will celebrate his 13th birthday Thursday at Howie’s Game Shack in Mission Viejo.

The Przewalski’s horse of Mongolia’s Gobi desert–considered the world’s only remaining, “true” wild horse–has had its share of existential challenges over the centuries. Once considered “extinct in the wild”, due primarily to habitat loss, the horse’s status has been upgraded recently to “critically endangered”, based upon criteria set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (UICN) in Switzerland.

The “upgrade” requires that at least fifty mature individuals be “free-living” in the wild for a minimum of five years.

There have been previous attempts to reintroduce the horse

to the Central Asian steppe country from China’s zoos (going back to 1985), but these were considered unsuccessful.

A CHEMISTRY student has reportedly been killed by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum.

Russian news agency Ria Novosti reports the 25-year-old chemistry student was found dead with his jaw blown off after he was working on a computer at his parents’ house in the Ukraine city of Konotop.

"A loud pop was heard from the student's room," a city police chief aide told ukranews.com.

"When his relatives entered the room they saw that the lower part of the young man's face had been blown off."

The man was studying at Ukraine’s Kiev Polytechnic Institute and was known for his habit of dipping chewing in citric acid.

Ria Novosti reports police found both citric acid packets and “some kind of explosive material” on a table in his parents’s room.

They believe he may have confused the two packets, dipping thegum into the explosive material rather than the citric acid.

Bush is more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than Obama.

I think Bush is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize not because of Afghanistan or Iraq (although I do think Afghanistan and Iraq are ultimately better off without al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, respectively). I believe Bush is more deserving because he initiated the largest foreign aid humanitarian effort ever undertaken by a single country.

During his 2003 State of the Union Address, President Bush launched The President's Emergency Relief Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).² He asked Congress to commit $15 billion over five years to this program.

According to a study released by Stanford University School of Medicine in April 2009, 1.2 million people (mostly in Africa) are alive who would have otherwise not been as a direct result of PEPFAR.

The policies of President Obama haven't saved a single life.

Obama keeps talking about the jobs his administration is “creating,” but there are more people unemployed now than before he took office.

What does it take to create a job? It takes wealth to pay someone who is hired, not to mention additional wealth to buy the material that person will use.

But government creates no wealth.

Without creating wealth, how can they create jobs? By taking wealth from others, whether by taxation, selling bonds, or imposing mandates.

However it is done, transferring wealth is not creating wealth. When government uses transferred wealth to hire people, it is essentially transferring jobs from the private sector, not adding to the net number of jobs in the economy.

If that was all that was involved, it would be a simple verbal fraud

None of this is peculiar to the current administration. The Roosevelt administration created huge numbers of government jobs during the 1930s — and yet unemployment remained in double digits throughout FDR’s first two terms.
