Ireland's Strict Abortion Laws Challenged In European Court

Ireland is a deeply Catholic country, known for its stringent laws restricting abortion, which essentially make it impossible for a woman to have the procedure unless her life is in danger. But now these laws are being challenged, not in Ireland itself, but in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The three plaintiffs are Irish women who have all traveled to Britain to have abortions. They say that the effective ban on abortion in Ireland violates the European Convention on Human Rights.

Almost 140,000 Irish women have traveled to Britain over the past 30 years to have abortions; currently, 6,000 women are estimated to leave the country each year for the procedure. And the illegality of abortion is deeply entrenched in Irish law, which dates from 1861. In 1983, the Irish constitution was amended to state explicitly that life begins at conception. This is the first challenge to Irish abortion law in over 15 years.

The video shows a rocket running out of fuel and spiraling out of control, which looks exactly like the photos and videos.

Norwegian astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard says it's 99.9% safe to say that it's a rocket out of control, while some newspapers and TV channels are quoting Russian military sources, confirming that this is a failed Bulava missile launched from a nuclear submarine in the White Sea.

The Norwegian defense has confirmed that, even while they have not admitted the failure, the Russian Navy alerted them about the tests prior to the giant spiral appearing in the skies. And if that wasn't enough to convince everyone, here are two images of the missile trails being blown away by the wind, at dawn:

But staff at Tiggywinkles wildlife hospital in Buckinghamshire have decided enough is enough. Snowball must slim down.

The hedgehog arrived at the Aylesbury centre in October weighing in at a hefty 1.5kg.

He had apparently been taking too much advantage of dog food left out at night by nature-lovers.

In a bid to reduce his weight to a healthier 1kg, he is undergoing daily swimming sessions in the centre's hydrotherapy unit. Rather glamorously, this is a jacuzzi donated by TV presenter Philippa Forrester.

Staff have also put him on a strict regime of kitten biscuits rather than the usual - but richer - diet of dog food.

Snowball has already enjoyed some success in his slimming efforts, having lost 38g so far.

People keep saying “Yes, the Climategate scientists behaved badly. But that doesn’t mean the data is bad. That doesn’t mean the earth is not warming.”

Let me start with the second objection first. The earth has generally been warming since the Little Ice Age, around 1650.

The second question, the integrity of the data, is different.

There are three main global temperature datasets. One is at the CRU, Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, where we’ve been trying to get access to the raw numbers. One is at NOAA/GHCN, the Global Historical Climate Network. The final one is at NASA/GISS, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

One of the things that was revealed in the released CRU emails is that the CRU basically uses the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN) dataset for its raw data.

these graphs all use the raw GHCN data. But the IPCC uses the “adjusted” data.

Clark County Commissioner Rory Reid, who is running for governor, traveled to the nation’s capital where his father, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, holds forth these days as Senate Democratic leader. While he was in D.C., the younger Reid met with national political reporters who then cranked out some articles in which he came off second best.

Since the reporters naturally did not know the Nevada governor’s race issues, they asked him about issues that are on his father’s plate—health care and Afghanistan. The "inconvenient truth" overhanging the UN's Copenhagen conference is not that the climate is warming or cooling, but that humans are overpopulating the world.

A planetary law, such as China's one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate currently, which is one million births every four days.

The world's other species, vegetation, resources, oceans, arable land, water supplies and atmosphere are being destroyed and pushed out of existence as a result of humanity's soaring reproduction rate.

Ironically, China, despite its dirty coal plants, is the world's leader in terms of fashioning policy to combat environmental degradation, thanks to its one-child-only edict.

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that's somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country's difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Mystery Spiral Appears Over Norway

Norway often has strange lights dancing around the night sky, but early this morning it wasn't the aurora that captivated many eyewitnesses in the north of the country. A giant spiral had appeared, and so far there's little explanation as to what might have caused the phenomenon.

"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," said Nick Banbury of Harstad, Norway. "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth.

"According to the press, this could be seen all over northern Norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart."

The faintest and reddest objects in the image are likely the oldest galaxies ever identified, having formed between only 600–900 million years after the Big Bang. The image shows thousands of galaxies, some more than 12 billion years old. The field view of this image would fit behind a grain of sand held at arm's length against the sky. States that have painted a similar target on businesses might do themselves a little favor by running some numbers before pulling the trigger.

I’ve never really understood the method of discourse that revolves around drowning someone else out. I’m certain that somewhere my side has done this as well, so I disavow those attempts as well, but I don’t remember Jonn and I ever showing up at a IVAW rally and trying to chant. It’s just ridiculous. I can’t fathom any disagreement that I would ever side with the group trying to stop the other side from speaking.

I would make a marketplace of ideas argument, but it is fairly clear that this side doesn’t believe in the markets.
