Ireland is a deeply Catholic country, known for its stringent laws restricting abortion, which essentially make it impossible for a woman to have the procedure unless her life is in danger. But now these laws are being challenged, not in Ireland itself, but in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The three plaintiffs are Irish women who have all traveled to Britain to have abortions. They say that the effective ban on abortion in Ireland violates the European Convention on Human Rights.

Almost 140,000 Irish women have traveled to Britain over the past 30 years to have abortions; currently, 6,000 women are estimated to leave the country each year for the procedure. And the illegality of abortion is deeply entrenched in Irish law, which dates from 1861. In 1983, the Irish constitution was amended to state explicitly that life begins at conception. This is the first challenge to Irish abortion law in over 15 years.

<clipSource>http://www.care2.com/causes/womens-rights/blog/irelands-strict-abortion-laws-challenged-in-european-court/</clipSource>

Grandad Reminiscing

clipped by: wiganfootie

Clip Source: cageradio.com

“When I were a lad, Momma would send me down to the corner store with a

dollar, and I’d come back with five pounds of potatoes, two loaves of

bread, three pints of milk, a pound of cheese, a packet of tea, and half

a dozen eggs. One is at the CRU, Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, where we’ve been trying to get access to the raw numbers. One is at NOAA/GHCN, the Global Historical Climate Network. The final one is at NASA/GISS, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

One of the things that was revealed in the released CRU emails is that the CRU basically uses the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN) dataset for its raw data.

these graphs all use the raw GHCN data. But the IPCC uses the “adjusted” data.

Before getting homogenized, temperatures in Darwin were falling at 0.7 Celcius per century

Tags: climategate, climate change, climate, fraud, hoax, outrage, "science"

<clipSource>http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/08/the-smoking-gun-at-darwin-zero/</clipSource>

Reid's life-raft is deflating

clipped by: dl211
clipper's remarks: Of course, these come as no surprise to Nevadans & we’re sure to see many more between now & the 2010 election. The question is how deep the lifeboat holding Nevada’s “representative” will sink… According to that same LVRJ poll set, a whopping 53% of Nevadans polled do not support the health reform legislation Mr. Reid has proposed & supports. Only 39% of Nevadans are in favor, demonstrating a pretty significant drop in approval numbers since October when the split was 49% -40%. So why, Senator Reid, do you continue to tout this bill (constantly in decline) as the Insurance of a Lifetime? Are you a representative of Nevada’s people or do you just work for the “Big Guy?” Errr, wait—the ultra-Liberal left is always for the “forgotten man.” Point noted.

Clip Source: www.examiner.com

Though Rory Reid said nothing against his father in the press interviews, the GOP mailing was headed, “Not exactly a vote of confidence from Harry Reid’s own son.” And Las Vegas columnist Jon Ralston posted a piece headlined “Reids’ national media misadventures …” that said, “But t

Clip Source: www.newsreview.com

A Reid too far?

Political players say the ‘dynasty’ issue worries voters

Clark County Commissioner Rory Reid, who is running for governor,
traveled to the nation’s capital where his father, U.S. Sen.
Harry Reid, holds forth these days as Senate Democratic leader. While
he was in D.C., the younger Reid met with national political reporters
who then cranked out some articles in which he came off second

was articles with headlines like “Rory Reid: I’m not
running with my dad?” (Politico) and “Reids Running, But
Maybe Not Together” (National Journal). The piece posted on the

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that's somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country's difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Public Policy Polling:

A giant spiral had appeared, and so far there's little explanation as to what might have caused the phenomenon.

"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," said Nick Banbury of Harstad, Norway. The faintest and reddest objects in the image are likely the oldest galaxies ever identified, having formed between only 600–900 million years after the Big Bang. The image shows thousands of galaxies, some more than 12 billion years old. The field view of this image would fit behind a grain of sand held at arm's length against the sky. Almost every dot in this photo is an entire galaxy of stars and who knows what fascinating undiscovered mysteries.

Clip Source: hubblesite.org

Hubble's Deepest View of Universe Unveils Never-Before-Seen Galaxies

<clipSource>http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2009/31/image/a/format/xlarge_web/</clipSource>

Chain of Fools

clipped by: ColoradoRight
clipper's remarks: tax your property, tax your clothes, tax your food, tax your water, tax your electricity, tax your gasoline, tax your income, tax your savings, tax your capital, tax your internet access, tax your phone, tax the very breath you exhale?

Clip Source: minx.cc

How are states coping with the recession? They're beating more money out of you that's how.

29 states increased taxes and fees, and 33 will increase unemployment-insurance taxes

Property tax increases, sales tax hikes, a boatload of increases to cover reduced expenditures.

Notice Geraghty's example on the Maryland "Millionaire" tax. At some point, a large number of the wealthy decided "screw this, I think I'll live somewhere else". Net revenue decline, $100 million. States that have painted a similar target on businesses might do themselves a little favor by running some numbers before pulling the trigger.

I’m certain that somewhere my side has done this as well, so I disavow those attempts as well, but I don’t remember Jonn and I ever showing up at a IVAW rally and trying to chant. It’s just ridiculous. I can’t fathom any disagreement that I would ever side with the group trying to stop the other side from speaking.

I would make a marketplace of ideas argument, but it is fairly clear that this side doesn’t believe in the markets.

Tags: dorks on parade

<clipSource>http://thisainthell.us/blog/?p=16017</clipSource>
