Love at first sight - utopia or reality

How would our life be without the most beautiful thing of the world, love? Well, it would be very sad and boring. Each one of us has surely had this special feeling of butterflies in the stomach; suddenly your legs are shaking and you can’t avoid this silly look you have on your face, neither can you stop looking or staring at this fascinating person who has just come through the door. As you can see, love at the first sight can really stream through your body within seconds. How is it possible to fall in love so fast with someone whose character we don’t even really know? Love at first sight: utopia or reality?

But where does this feeling of ‘that’s the right one’ come from? How can we be so sure about having found the great love of our life? Or was it really Cupid’s love arrows? In this case, scientists don’t spoil our romanticism and support our theory with studies and analysis.

Obama Steals Bush’s Speechwriters

If you closed your eyes during much of the President’s speech on Afghanistan Tuesday night and just listened to the words, you easily could have concluded that George W. Bush was still in the Oval Office.

Or, at the very least, that Obama had stolen his speechwriters.

Because, like Bush, Obama had barely cleared his throat when out came the first mention of September 11, along with the Bushian line: “We did not ask for this fight.”

The Only Thing Missing is "V for Vendetta" Masks

men were arrested yesterday for trying to re-paint a bike lane on a 14-block stretch on Bedford avenue in Brooklyn. The bike lane was recently removed by the city because of complaints by some local groups (the usual stuff about having fewer parkings and "hurting local businesses"). The unknown men made a video (see below) of them doing their guerilla bike safety civil disobedience

The video contains a manifesto that explains that bike lanes are there for safety, and that the removal of the Bedford bike lane won't keep cyclists from using that route since it leads to the Williamsburg bridge. All that it's going to do is make it more dangerous for cyclists.

They conclude with this warning for the city: "Do not try to remove [bike lanes], or we will put them back for our own safety."

In 1953, eight years before his farewell address and in front of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, President Dwight Eisenhower cautioned his listeners about a "cross of iron."(1) He believed the potential for a just and peaceful post World War Two society was being squandered by the Cold War and Arms Race. President Eisenhower claimed, "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."(2) He also warned nations about maintaining powerful militaries and producing enormous weapons systems. He alleged they were "spending the sweat of their laborers, the genius of their scientists, and the hopes of their children." President Eisenhower then said, "This is not a way of life at all...it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."(3)

Last week, President Barack Obama announced plans to send 34,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

At the height of the 2008 Presidential campaign, I recall passing neighbors' houses adorned with Obama signs.

I remember my anger and confusion. Thinking to myself, "how could any rational, educated person support a man who has no executive experience? Who worked with the Democrat Socialists of America? Who represented ACORN as an attorney? ACORN! The antithesis of all things American, undermining the integrity of our very voting system!

Therefore, I have prepared the following yard signs for insertion into those very same neighbors' lawns. Perhaps at 04:00 hours, when human consciousness is at its nadir.

Just insert the signs, below, into their front yards to express your gratitude for their votes.

In this way, you can show your sincere appreciation for their act of voting us into a depression. For voting in favor of an economic catastrophe.

They'll thank you later. Perhaps when you're working, side-by-side, in the rice fields.

The idea that fewer than 1 percent of Americans are being called on to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq and that we’re sending them into combat again and again and again — for three tours, four tours, five tours, six tours — is obscene. All decent people should object.

The air is filled with obsessive self-satisfied rhetoric about supporting the troops, giving them everything they need and not letting them down. But that rhetoric is as hollow as a jazzman’s drum because the overwhelming majority of Americans have no desire at all to share in the sacrifices that the service members and their families are making. Most Americans do not want to serve in the wars, do not want to give up their precious time to do volunteer work that would aid the nation’s warriors and their families, do not even want to fork over the taxes that are needed to pay for the wars.

After a botched attempt to execute a prisoner in the US state of Ohio in September caused international outrage, you might have thought Ohio would hesitate before pressing ahead with another execution. Not a bit of it.

The US state that condemned Edinburgh's Kenny Richey to die and came desperately close to killing him is unfazed that its prison staff subjected an inmate called Romell Broom to a two-hour ordeal where they repeatedly shoved a lethal injection needle into various parts of his body – thigh, ankle, feet, muscles and bone. They've done it again, only this time piloting a new lethal injection on a death row inmate called Kenneth Biros, someone I've written to for many years.

The "inconvenient truth" overhanging the UN's Copenhagen conference is not that the climate is warming or cooling, but that humans are overpopulating the world.

A planetary law, such as China's one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate currently, which is one million births every four days.

The world's other species, vegetation, resources, oceans, arable land, water supplies and atmosphere are being destroyed and pushed out of existence as a result of humanity's soaring reproduction rate.

Ironically, China, despite its dirty coal plants, is the world's leader in terms of fashioning policy to combat environmental degradation, thanks to its one-child-only edict.

People keep saying “Yes, the Climategate scientists behaved badly. But that doesn’t mean the data is bad. That doesn’t mean the earth is not warming.”

Let me start with the second objection first. The earth has generally been warming since the Little Ice Age, around 1650.

The second question, the integrity of the data, is different.

There are three main global temperature datasets. One is at the CRU, Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, where we’ve been trying to get access to the raw numbers. One is at NOAA/GHCN, the Global Historical Climate Network. The final one is at NASA/GISS, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

One of the things that was revealed in the released CRU emails is that the CRU basically uses the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN) dataset for its raw data.

these graphs all use the raw GHCN data. But the IPCC uses the “adjusted” data.

Henry Molaison lived in relative obscurity, but he possessed one of the world's most famous brains.

Molaison, who was born in 1926, was a smart, technically minded man. But from childhood, he was plagued by seizures, and as he grew older, the seizures and medications he took for them interfered with his life.

The surgery was meant to help. It was performed in 1953 by Dr. William Beecher Scoville, an internationally known expert in lobotomies

The operation reduced Molaison's seizures. But it also left him unable to remember anything new for more than about 20 seconds.

It was a life-changing event for Molaison and, for scientists, a remarkable opportunity.

Barack Obama’s trip to Oslo to pick up his Nobel peace award is in danger of being overshadowed by a row over cancellation of a series of events normally attended by the prize-winner.

Norwegians are incensed over what they view as his shabby response to the prize by cutting short his visit.

29 states increased taxes and fees, and 33 will increase unemployment-insurance taxes

Property tax increases, sales tax hikes, a boatload of increases to cover reduced expenditures.

Notice Geraghty's example on the Maryland "Millionaire" tax. At some point, a large number of the wealthy decided "screw this, I think I'll live somewhere else". Net revenue decline, $100 million. States that have painted a similar target on businesses might do themselves a little favor by running some numbers before pulling the trigger.

I'm quite sure the businesses have already done that arithmetic.

ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis is a liar, perhaps even a pathological liar.

She lies about ACORN’s track record, its budget, its size, voter fraud, and so many other things.

Glenn Beck nailed her on yet another lie — and it’s a big one.

As Lewis praised the sham so-called audit by ACORN ally Scott Harshbarger the other day, she forgot a key statement that Harshbarger used in the report that supposedly cleared ACORN with respect to the underage illegal alien sex videos.

Harshbarger went to great pains to argue in a lawyerly way that ACORN Housing was totally and completely legally separate and independent from ACORN, that is, the secretive, non-tax-exempt lead entity that heads the ACORN network.

He also went to an effort to point out that as chief organizer (CEO) of ACORN Bertha Lewis has no authority over ACORN Housing, something those of us who study ACORN know is wholly untrue.
