Especially when I see the statistic that only 29% of people who haven't graduated high school have Internet access.

Is the real issue education? Is it not that some groups don't have access to the Internet, but that the lack of quality education they receive leads them to not realize or understand why access to information on the net is so valuable?

I don't know the answer to the question, but I do know our public school systems are terrible in many places. Maybe we need to focus on educating our youth. If we don't, even if they do get Internet access, what will they really do with it?

Clip Source: news.cnet.com

Overwhelmingly, these unconnected individuals tend to be minorities and people with low education levels. A recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that only 57 percent of African Americans and 37 percent of Hispanics have Internet access. And only 29 percent of people who have not graduated from high school are connected to the Internet.

There's been a lot of chatter over the years about the digital divide or the idea that there is a great chasm between people who have access to technology such as computers and the Internet, and those who do not. While some 68 percent of the U.S. population has access to the Internet via broadband or dial-up connections, there are still millions of people across the country who do not have any access at all.

<clipSource>http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10033386-94.html</clipSource>

Now, The Bad News

clipped by: debbyski
clipper's remarks: Well, what can I say? I remember listening to the priest before we got married giving us the big talk about the "rhythm" method; and I was thinking I can't wait to get my rhythm on later baby and I bet he can't either!

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

He would be the gentleman, she would be the lady, and with the backing of a strong family they would do what was expected of them. That would, of course, be consistent with the views of Ms. Palin, a mother of five children (including one with Down syndrome) who opposes abortion.

But it is teenage marriage today, not teenage pregnancy, that is the rarity. It is suggested that an emphasis on testing and targets leads to teachers providing a minimal imput wrt literacy skills.

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

In our current school system children are explicitly taught how to read and write in the early years. After that a certain level of literacy is taken for granted as we rush them through the prescribed curriculum, heading quickly towards the golden GCSE As to Cs and hoping for better league table results.

This focus on exam results can leave a significant number of "hopeless" cases left behind. As the recent SATs result show, almost a fifth of students leave primary school without basic literacy. Allowing this number of children to slip through the net can have a detrimental effect on their behaviour in adolescence and through into adulthood.

Youth crime has been strongly linked to illiteracy and truancy. Government figures for 2002 – 2003 show 40% of young offenders entering prison were below level 1 (i.e. would not achieve a G at GCSE English). This is also true of adult offenders, with 80% having the writing skills of an 11 year old.

Tags: uk, crime, youth, violence, illiteracy, testing, targets

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2008/sep/01/pupilbehaviour.classroomviolence?gusrc=rss&feed=education</clipSource>

Suicide Cult on Social Networking

clipped by: Imnclady

Clip Source: www.timesonline.co.uk

'Let victims' families close suicide tribute websites'

Families of suicide victims should be able to demand the immediate shutdown of

Palin’s youth, beauty, and distance from Washington were all chosen because they directly counter shortcomings of McCain. Her indisputable conservatism in areas where McCain has appeared moderate — abortion, the Second Amendment, drilling — as well as her “strength” in domestic issues, balances nicely with McCain’s flip-flopping war-focused campaign.

Quite frankly, conservatives have rewarded a woman politically for deciding to keep a baby and for sending her son to Iraq.
None of my pro-Hillary female friends are falling for this obvious GOP

Palin probably won't challenge John McCain on any substantive issues

The only thing he is going to let her do in the White House is teach him how to
use the internet

It just seems desperate and calculated

Palin makes McCain look ancient, out-of-touch and totally yesterday. McCain
makes her look like a perky kid. Each one dramatically and perfectly underscores
the other's weakness. At least, nobody can criticize Obama's alleged youth and
inexperience now.

<clipSource>http://www.huffingtonpost.com/van-jones/palin-youre-no-hillary-cl_b_122479.html</clipSource>

Palin For Vice President: Palin on the Issues

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: SMALL BUSINESS – “As Mayor and CEO of the booming city of Wasilla, my team invited investment and encouraged business growth by eliminating small business inventory taxes, eliminated personal property taxes, reduced real property tax mill levies every year I was in office, reduced fees, and built the infrastructure our businesses needed to grow and prosper.”

MILITARY - “I respect our military personnel and understand the importance of Alaska's National Guard. As I watched our military men and women being deployed I recognized how important it is for their families to know how much Alaska and America support them.”

HEALTH CARE – “I support flexibility in government regulations that allow competition in health care that is needed, and is proven to be good for the consumer, which will drive down health care costs and reduce the need for government subsidies. Rather than telling you what I think Sarah Palin believes, I have elected to post direct quotes from her gubernatorial campaign website. The following quotes have been selected because I believe that they reveal Gov. Palin’s thought process on issues of national relevant. For more info on Gov. Steps on Obama’s claims to have been a reformer, as he reformed nothing (much less the corrupt mare’s nest of Chicago arrangements), while she was a dragon-slayer up in Alaska.

11. As a mother of five, one a Down Syndrome baby, helps her side take on the Democrats on abortion extremism and the Born Alive bill.

12. Reignites the deep and unhealed stresses inside the Democrats, some of whom will now wonder more loudly than ever why they didn't pick Hillary.

13. Counters Michelle in a way Cindy couldn’t.

14. Counter-intuitively, makes the issue of Obama’s light resume more potent than ever. Her lack of experience is no more than his is. And he’s--to use a term from Alaska, and the Iditarod--their lead dog.

Clip Source: www.weeklystandard.com

1. Steps on the story of Obama’s speech (and convention), and possibly the bounce coming from them, and wipes them off the news cycle. The Sunday news shows will be all-Palin, all of the time.

2. Sends Republicans into their convention on a huge head of steam.

3. Wipes out the image of McCain as the crotchety elder and brings back that of the fly-boy and gambler, which is much more appealing, and the genuine person.

4. Revs up the base AND excites independents, which no one else in the party, or perhaps in the world, could have accomplished.

5. Puts youth, change, and history on both of the tickets.

6. May detach some young people, especially women.

7. May attach some women pissed off about Hillary.

8. As a pro-life super-achiever, puts feminists in a tizzy.

9. Revives some of the double-edged nature of the Democratic primary, which featured a black vs. a
female trail-blazer, and put both sides on notice on sensitivity issues.

Tags: gov sarah palin, republicans, change, youth, history, pro-life, reformer, energy independence

<clipSource>http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/08/what_palin_does.asp</clipSource>
