Well, the self-identified pit bull has been unleashed -- if not unhinged.

McCain had said that racially explosive attacks related to Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, are off limits. But Palin told New York Times columnist Bill Kristol in an interview published Monday: "I don't know why that association isn't discussed more."

Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

Never again will you read a word in this space giving John McCain the benefit of a doubt or arguing that he should be dealt with respectfully. If respect must be earned, then so can it be lost. Vice presidential candidate Barack Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, said yesterday that Obama "didn't know the history" of domestic terrorist bomber William Ayers' activities in the violent Weather Undergroud movement when he attended a political event at Ayers' home in 1995

CNN found the two having repeatedly crossed paths was Chicago's Annenberg Challenge project.

CNN also found that Ayers and Obama served "on the board" of a second organization, the Woods fund. "Among its receipients: Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church where Obama attended and a children and family justice center where Ayers' wife worked."

"The chairmanship of the $100 million Annenberg board helped volt him from southside Chicago lawyer to political player and that too has another connection to Bill Ayers.

Brilliant. In the midst of a Wall Street crisis, and with McCain getting hammered for ignoring the middle class, Kristol wants McCain to talk about the former pastorat Obama's former church. Yeah, that will win voters over.

If Democrats are very lucky, McCain will take Kristol's advice.

KRISTOL HAS A PLAN....

Bill Kristol believes his long-time friend, John McCain, is having some trouble, but he devotes his New York Times column today to explaining that McCain still "has a chance" to "surge to victory."

In fact, Kristol has a two-pronged approach to helping the Republican ticket get on track.

Step One involves Sarah Palin.

McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her --

I'm told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staff's handling of Palin

They're supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday

the notion of "liberating" Palin to begin a series of relentless attacks seems misguided. As Joe Klein noted, "I'd wonder about the shelf-life of Palin's efficacy as an attack dog, especially now that the American people have come to see her as the incredible -- as in not credible -- vice presidential choice that she is."

Despite his words today about "change" and "cleaning up the mess in Washington," Obama was not on the side of reformers who were trying to change the status quo of corrupt, machine politics in Chicago and clean up the mess there. Obama came out in favor of the Daley machine and against reform candidates.

Senator Obama is running on an image that is directly the opposite of what he has been doing for two decades. His escapes from his past have been as remarkable as the great escapes of Houdini.

Critics of Senator Barack Obama make a strategic mistake when they talk about his "past associations." That just gives his many defenders in the media an opportunity to counter-attack against "guilt by association."

Associations are very different from alliances. Allies are not just people who happen to be where you are or who happen to be doing the same things you do. You choose allies deliberately for a reason. The kind of allies you choose says something about you.

Jeremiah Wright, Father Michael Pfleger, William Ayers and Antoin Rezko are not just people who happened to be at the same place at the same time as Barack Obama. They are people with whom he chose to ally himself for years, and with some of whom some serious money changed hands.

Obama could have allied himself with all sorts of other people. But, time and again, he allied himself with people who openly expressed their hatred of America. No amount of flags on his campaign platforms this election year can change that.

As more details emerge on the Obama-Ayers connection (here's a short story from 1997 on Ayers that features both Obamas and which suggests that Michelle Obama organized the program that featured both Ayers and her husband), the Obama talking heads are hysterical with outrage, which is a clear signal to Team McCain to keep digging and swinging on the subject of Obama's judgement.

The message also has to be targeted at the reality that the dizzying declines in the markets cannot be arrested and reversed with tax hikes and unemployment benefit extensions. Even as people shudder at the rapid decline in their savings and retirement accounts, they have to be trusted to know that anti-growth polices of the sort being pushed by Obama will simply drive business, jobs and growth overseas. A tax hike agenda of the sort pushed by Obama right now is economic suicide, and John McCain has to forcefully say so.

Husband, 2nd man held in female soldier's stabbing

RALEIGH, N.C. - For the third time in four months, a female soldier based at Fort Bragg is dead, and a husband or lover is charged with murder - leading critics to demand the home base of the Army's elite soldiers exert "control over their troops" and address domestic violence.

Authorities said Smith hired Kvapil to kill his wife - 29-year-old Sgt. Christina E. Smith - as the couple walked together Tuesday evening in their off-base Fayetteville neighborhood.

"The number of military women being killed in North Carolina in the last eight months is horrific," said retired Army Col. Ann Wright, a former State Department diplomat who once served at Fort Bragg and is now a peace activist

"For me, I was thinking, 'No, gosh, not another one,'" said Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance. "We have domestic violence issues like every other city. Obviously, the military seems to be targeted lately."

Republicans are urging John McCain to adopt more aggressive tactics against Barack Obama amid fears that the White House is slipping away from them.

Although McCain has been pumping out negative ads throughout August and September, Republican state leaders and officials want to see him becoming even more personal, exploiting Obama's links with figures he knew in Chicago. These include: William Ayers, a former member of Weather Underground, a group involved in a 1970s bombing campaign in the US; the Rev Jeremiah Wright, his controversial former pastor; and Tony Rezko, the land developer convicted of fraud and bribery earlier this year who had contributed to his campaign funds.

Credit crunch hurts people with good credit

Indianapolis- The crisis on Wall Street began on main street. Credit flowing freely to loans that fell into foreclosure. What that's led to is a tightening to credit that some in the financial industry say they've never seen.

"About 90 to 95 percent of the loans that we do get turned down,"said Ken Blaudow, Indy Mortgage.

Even people with jobs and good credit are being routinely turned down for home loans and equity lines of credit. Jessica Wright is selling her home and looking to buy another. She and her husband have good credit but are worried about a buyer getting financing. They could also face trouble getting a mortgage.

"I feel like we're in the right position and I feel we shouldn't have trouble getting a loan but the way things are going, I guess that's a possibility," said Wright.
