Delaware named as world’s most secret financial location

(GUARDIAN) Delaware in the US is officially the world’s most secret financial location. The finding will embarrass President Barack Obama as the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Bill he supports comes before Congress this week.

In the first ever detailed ranking of 60 of the world’s financial hubs, published today, Delaware was found wanting in 11 out of 12 secrecy indicators. London was also ranked in the top five most secretive jurisdictions.

The east coast state of Delaware, home to half of all America’s quoted companies, fails to place on public record details of trusts, company accounts and, crucially, the identity of beneficial owners – the people who receive the profits. It also allows companies to relocate to other countries, leaving minimal trace.

NEW YORK—Officials from New York Road Runners stripped American Meb Keflezighi of his 2009 ING New York City Marathon victory Wednesday after a blood sample taken from his fetlock was found to contain high levels of performance-enhancing horse.

Keflezighi finished the race in 48 minutes and 12 seconds, easily setting a new world record and defeating his nearest competitor by one hour and 20 minutes.

Course workers, spectators, and event sponsors have all presented damaging evidence pointing toward Keflezighi's use of equine enhancements. Volunteers working refreshment tables during the race said Keflezighi took water only twice—at miles nine and 17—consuming roughly 10 gallons each time, and was the only professional runner in the men's event to request an oat, carrot, and sugar lump station. In addition, a spokesman for Nike told reporters the company provided Keflezighi with six shoes for the marathon, four of which required special construction before being nailed onto his feet.

Maurice Greene, the former 100m world champion and world record holder, who retired last year, reckoned he might see a low 9.6 but never a 9.5. Fifty years ago, many thought the four-minute mile unachievable. Then Bannister did it in 1954 and the psychological gates burst open. More than 1,000 runners have since broken four minutes.

So what’s it to be? Eriksen thinks he can do 9.55, Denny says 9.48 and Bolt thinks he may better both. Only time and the finish line can tell.

Science believes that he has more to give.

Sean Murphy sets new record for stuffing 16 cockroaches into his mouth

A PET shop worker has set a new world record after stuffing 16 Madagascar hissing cockroaches - each more than 6cm long - into his MOUTH.

Sean Murphy, of Lansing, Michigan, US, shattered the old Guinness World Records score of 11 to secure the new mark.

He initially thought he'd only be able to fit 12 and admitted the final result was a "big surprise" since he's never fit that many in before "in one try".

Murphy's effort would need to be certified by Guinness for it to be official.

He now wants to push for 20 next year.

NH restaurant sets meatball record

CONCORD, N.H. – The bouncing mega-meatball record has landed in the East Coast

Matthew Mitnitsky, owner of Nonni's Italian Eatery in Concord, said Sunday that a 222.5-pound meatball was authenticated as the world's largest after being weighed by state weights and measures officials.

A Guinness Book of World Records official confirmed the big meatball as a record breaker and presented Mitnitsky with a plaque.

The old record of 198.6 pounds was set just over a month ago after Los Angeles-based talk show host Jimmy Kimmel vowed to beat a record set in Mexico. That record — 109 pounds — was set in August.

Mitnitsky said he got involved "to bring the meatball back to the East Coast because that's where it originated."

The organizers of the Denver Gorilla Run say the 1,061 people ran 3.5 miles dressed as gorillas. That was enough to set a Guinness World Record for the most people in gorilla costume.

The annual Halloween race raises money for the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. The fund raises money to continue the work of Dian Fossey, whose research was the subject of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist."

First-time Denver Gorilla Run racers pay almost $100 to participate -- but registration includes a gorilla suit.

Climate change emissions from meat production are far higher than currently estimated, according to a controversial new study that will fuel the debate on whether people should eat fewer animal products to help the environment.

In a paper published by a respected US thinktank, the Worldwatch Institute, two World Bank environmental advisers claim that instead of 18 per cent of global emissions being caused by meat, the true figure is 51 per cent.

They claim that United Nation's figures have severely underestimated the greenhouse gases caused by tens of billions of cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and other animals in three main areas: methane, land use and respiration.

"If this argument is right," write Goodland and Anhang, "it implies that replacing livestock products with better alternatives would be the best strategy for reversing climate change.

Scientists are concerned about livestock's exhalation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Hilo radiologist Scott Grosskreutz's 7-pound mango grown on a backyard tree isn't quite a world record, but Paradise Plants owner Leslie Hill said it's the biggest one she's ever seen.

He took 250 pounds off the tree Thursday, he said. Most range from 1 to 4 pounds, with a few from 5 to 7 pounds, he said.

"It was not stringy. It had a very pleasant flavor," he said. An even bigger mango was on the tree, he said, adding that he has contacted colleagues in Hilo to follow up on it.

World's biggest rubber band ball

A Florida man has finally bid farewell to the world's largest rubber band ball.

Joel Waul, 28, of Luaderhill, spent five years knotting, stretching and wrapping rubber bands together to create the 1,000lb ball, reports the Miami Herald.

But Mr Waul has now sold it to the Ripley's Believe It or Not! emporium who removed it with the help of a crane and a flatbed truck.

He started on his record bid in 2004 when he saw a TV episode of Ripley's featuring the then-record holder for largest rubber band ball.

"Right then, on the spot, I started," he said.

The ball grew and grew, reaching the point where it would no longer fit inside his home when Mr Waul moved it outside, to the drive.

It became a neighbourhood icon and was clearly visible when Google came around taking photographs for its street view function. It was recognised by Guinness as the world's biggest last year.

Brisbane Zombie Walk organisers could face a police bill for future events, after up to 5,000 zombies lurched through the CBD on Sunday.

Zombie Santas, strippers, soldiers and nurses surged through the city on Sunday, forcing police to block off streets and direct traffic.

On Tuesday evening co-organiser Anthony Radaza posted on the Brisbane Zombie Walk Facebook page: We just received the official report from Queensland Police and they tallied over 5,000 participants. Hurray for Brisbane and Zombie lovers."

Co-organiser Cara Westworth followed up with: "Best zombie walk of all times - 5,000 participants which makes it a world record!"

Queensland Police say five police were tasked to help with the zombie walk, based on estimates from event organisers that 1,500 people would take part.

Signs of economic resurgence around the world have lifted UK consumer confidence to its highest level since we went into recession.

The mood of confidence was supported by evidence that America's recession is finally over.

According to the Institute of International Finance, an association of global banks, the current world rebound could easily start losing momentum next year.

A European Commission index of optimism produced by GfK NOP leaped to its highest level since January 2008.

The 1,999 individuals polled judge this the best time to make a 'major purchase' since November 2007.
