Republican Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan's 7th District, running a tight race against Democrat Mark Schauer, was the only member of the House Education Labor and Committee to vote against reauthorizing Head Start.

Considering there are 43 members of the committee, this is rather significant. So naturally, more than a few people were peeved:

In other words, say a Baptist or a Catholic church wanted to continue to offer its Head Start program and a Muslim or "a Wiccan from a coven in Ann Arbor" wanted to apply for a job to teach there, now it couldn't discriminate based on religious grounds anymore, or vice versa.

He said he offered an amendment that would have made that change, but it didn't get any traction.

It would also open all of them to lawsuits, because the Wiccan, or the Catholic or the Muslim who wasn't hired, could say it was because of their religious beliefs, he said.

Woman injured by sword in Wiccan ceremony

A woman accidentally stabbed herself in the foot with a 3-foot-long sword while performing a Wiccan good luck ritual at a central Indiana cemetery.

Katherine Gunther, 36, of Lebanon, pierced her left foot with the sword while performing the rite at Oak Hill Cemetery, police said.

Gunther said she was performing the ceremony to give thanks for a recent run of good luck. The ceremony involves the use of candles, incense and driving swords into the ground during the full moon.

Gunther said was aiming to put the sword in the ground, but hit her foot instead.

"It wasn't the first time I performed the ritual, but it was the first time I put a sword through my foot," she said.

No charges were filed, police said. The Wiccans were warned that being in the cemetery in the city about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis after posted visiting hours constitutes trespassing.

There are endless chances that this led to good luck as much as i may have been bad. With that said, I am not religious. Just a thought.

Morning Edition, July 23, 2008 · An Indiana woman who wanted to give thanks for a recent run of good luck stabbed herself in the foot while performing a ritual, police said. Katherine Gunter, a Wiccan, went to a cemetery during the full moon and marked her good luck by burning incense and driving a 3-foot sword into the ground. She ended up in the hospital.

We believe in the Lord and Lady as well. The Divine Feminine is a vital part of our practices and beliefs. Some feel the Trinity is the Father (the Lord), Son (Christ) and the Holy Spirit (the Mother).

Christ reminded the people to “Love one another as you love yourself.”

The Wiccan Rede states: “And it harm none, do what ye will.”

We feel these two statements blend very well with each other. If you do no harm to anyone, including yourself, you are acting in love.

'Earth worship' on the rise among evangelical youth

Janice Crouse, a senior fellow with Concerned Women for America, says it's disturbing that many young people in evangelical churches are experimenting with the Wiccan religion. Church leaders and Christian parents, she warns, must be ready to counter that growing interest among their youth.

Crouse cites an article in Religion Journal which said youth pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention were worried about large numbers of evangelicals taking part in Wicca, a religion that involves nature worship, stresses moral autonomy, and includes remedies and spells -- beliefs that Crouse points out are distinctly different from orthodox Christianity, not to mention incompatible with the Bible.

According to Crouse, "earth worship" -- as she describes Wicca -- appeals to people who do not want to be bound by any book of authority or have imposed on them any requirements to be "believers."

A Wiccan Chaplain and Statewide California Department of Corrections, Patrick McCollum will speak at a briefing on prisoners' religious rights at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Washington, DC on Friday, February 8, 2007. This marks the first time that a Wiccan expert has spoken on religious freedom issues at a Commission briefing.

"It is an honor to be invited to participate in the dialogue and to share a Wiccan's point of view," said McCollum. "Those in minority faiths are seldom given the opportunity to be heard, even when the issue concerns their rights. I am hopeful this invitation is indicative of what we can expect going forward and that there truly is a desire on the part of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to ensure that inmates receive equal treatment, and a willingness to better serve minority religions."

Wiccan Symbol At Nativity Scene Damaged By Vehicle

Police are investigating vandalism aimed at a symbol of the Wiccan religion set up next to a Nativity scene in front of city hall.

Officials in this city 60 miles south of Buffalo say someone in a pickup truck backed over the Wiccan pentacle around 10:15 p.m. Monday, then sped off.

The pentacle, a pentagram within a circle, was placed last weekend near the Nativity scene Olean Mayor David Carucci allowed to be set up outside city hall last month.

Some Olean residents complained that placing the Nativity scene on government property raised issues over the separation of church and state. Carucci responded by allowing members of other faiths to display their symbols on city property during special times of celebration.

The pentacle was then set up by April Garlow, a Wiccan.

Wiccan Pentacle May Join Manger Outside Olean Building

The Nativity scene outside a municipal building near Buffalo could soon be sharing space with a Wiccan pentacle.

Olean Mayor David Carucci has given a local resident permission to set up a pentacle next to the Nativity scene outside the Olean Municipal Building.

Carucci authorized the manger scene for a private group without notifying the Common Council. He's refused to remove or relocate it until the lawmakers change a 12-year-old law banning private displays in city parks.

At a meeting last night, Carucci said he wouldn't move the display to local Lincoln Park, where other holiday decorations are already installed.

A Wiccan wins big in the lottery, says he attributes the win to Wiccan Magic and that he's going to use his winnings to quit his job and teach Wicca full time. Now, if a winner has attributed his winnings to Jesus and said that he was going to use his winnings to quit his job and teach Christianity, everyone would talk about how wonderful what he's doing is - but I can't imagine any pundit or politician claiming that its an example of the government subsidizing Christianity, eh?

And, of course, if I understand how lotteries work, the government isn't subsidizing ANYTHING. The whole point of government run lotteries is for the state to be able to raise money - usually to be used in funding education and such. Its all the other lottery players who are "subsidizing" the winners (if you want to put it that way.)

Anyway, just had to share that particular crock of crap. What a f*#^!ng donkey!

Well, Tucker, the first of four of those giant cardboard checks handed out in the 330 million dollar mega million jackpot today. A guy from Maryland named Bunky Bartlett got his 82.5 million buck today. Make no mistake, he didn‘t win the money because of luck, he won it because of Wiccan magic.

Bunky is an accountant who also teaches Wicca, which is a nature based religion. He and his wife were on their way it a mystical bookstore when he stopped to buy the winning ticket. Bunky says, quote, the universe was working its magic. He now plans to quit his job and concentrate on teaching Wicca.

Boy you could teach a lot of Wicca with that kind of cash.

CARLSON: You‘re saying basically the U.S. government is subsidizing some kind of devil worshiper, Satanism.

GEIST: That‘s exactly what I am getting at.

Controversy in a small farming town in Illinois has been bubbling and boiling ever since the witches moved in about a year ago.

A group of Wiccans recently opened a shop and online school in the middle of Rossville, Ill., a town of 1,200 people with one stoplight and four churches.

The group says they do not worship the devil or conjure up evil spells. They say they just want to practice their religion, honoring earth and nature

Some community members are upset over what kind of influence the Wiccans will have on the Christian community

"I just don't like what they bring into a community and I am concerned about youth; young people are growing up, are just forming their opinions and could be drawn into something that wouldn't really be good for their lives," said Carolyn Barragree, township superviser

"I think that they bring a negative, dark influence when what we would like to see is the light in our community," Barragree added

CARSON CITY -- When President Bush took time Tuesday to meet family members of some of the fallen soldiers from Northern Nevada, a woman whose husband made the ultimate sacrifice was notably absent.

Roberta Stewart of Fernley, who lost her husband, Sgt. Patrick Stewart, when the helicopter he was in was shot down in Afghanistan in September 2005, said she was not invited to the meeting that followed Bush's speech to the American Legion's national convention in Reno.

Roberta Stewart said she believes she knows why no invitation was extended to her by the White House.

Roberta Stewart, like her late husband, is a practitioner of the Wiccan faith, and she fought with the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than a year to win the right to display the pentacle, the emblem of their faith, on his memorial marker in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

clipper's remarks: I live next door to a church. Really, I could throw a rock from our balcony and hit the steeple... not that I am suggesting anything. Anyway, the church provides endless hilarity as I drive past it to get to my parking lot, what with its Harvest Festival pumpkins festooning their lawn and large banner advertising the harvest season. I suspect this vaguely pisses off all the pagans, though really they should be used to having their holidays hypocritically pilfered from them ever since Yule went the way of Christmas. I wonder what would happen if I went over there with a magic marker and decorated their pumpkins with pentacles...

Well, it seems I'm not the only one to live near enough to a church to notice this happy irony:

*Am I the only one amused at all of the various religious places that have Harvest Festivals in lieu of celebrating Halloween? I mean, from the perspective of a person who has spent the majority of her life in comparative religious study I think I can safely say that Harvest Celebrations have just as much of a pagan root as Halloween–perhaps more so. It’s sort of like saying “I won’t celebrate Blessed Virgin Day, but I’ll celebrate Beltaine.”
