FEMA phones hacked; more than 400 calls made to Middle East and Asia at cost of $12,000

WASHINGTON - A hacker broke into a Homeland Security Department telephone system over the weekend and racked up about $12,000 in calls to the Middle East and Asia.

The hacker made more than 400 calls on a Federal Emergency Management Agency voicemail system in Emmitsburg, Md., on Saturday and Sunday, according to FEMA spokesman Tom Olshanski.

FEMA is part of Homeland Security, which in 2003 put out a warning about this very vulnerability.

The voicemail system is new and recently was installed. It is a Private Branch Exchange, or PBX, a traditional corporate phone network that is used in thousands of companies and government offices. Many companies are moving to a higher tech version, known as Voice Over Internet Telephony.

"In this case it's sort of embarrassing that it happened to FEMA themselves — FEMA being a child of DHS, with calls going to the Middle East," Johnson said.

Valdis Krebs has mapped his twitter network, in the graphic above. Mine would be more complex, I think, and would have to capture my f2f, IM/VoIP, blog and Second Life networks.

My Blogroll has several hundred people in some 30 networks, with even more connections. It would be interesting to see the whole map. I suspect it would show that most of my networks are well connected internally with each other (cliquish?) and that, while men on the whole have more connections, women have more diverse connections. It's been interesting to see my twitter readers 'talking' to each other across my networks, making new and unexpected connections.

Assez d’attente; je veux une tablette avec écran tactile hyper simple et bon marché pour naviguer sur le web.

L’idée est toute simple: la machine est aussi fine que possible, le matériel Hardware est le plus basique et il y a un seul bouton pour allumer et éteindre; une entrée pour des écouteurs, une camera vidéo intégrée, des petits haut-parleurs et un micro; fonctionne avec WiFi, un port USB et une batterie intégrée, un demi GiGa de RAM, et un disque dur de 4 GiGa; on l’utilise essentiellement comme un iPhone, de façon tactile. On le veut sur Linux et Firefox; en fait l’idéal serait que tout soit OpenSource mais intégrer Skype pour la VoIP serait sympa aussi.

Une fois complété, nous travaillerons avec cette société afin d’obtenir une idée du coût (le but est d’environ $200) et peut-être d’obtenir des premiers prototypes.

L’objectif est simple: créer une machine simple et bon marché.

I solved the problem! The problem that we couldn't hear anuthing because it doesn't allow sip on 5060 port. What you have to do you just change the following registry:
HKLM\System\VoIP\SIP
EnablePort5060 = "1"

when it's "0" you don't get the port open and that's why you don't hear anything. It worked for me I hope it works for you as well. In addition it's realy nice cause you get the sound coming from the internal speaker :)
