The results of a trial suggestthat even a single exercise bout may improve the mood of patientswith clinical depression.¹⁴ Further, two randomised controlledtrials showed an association between exercise amount¹⁵ and duration^11,¹⁵and reduction of symptoms in patients with depression. Finally,a recent study provided evidence for exercise as a possibleadjuvant treatment for patients with poor response to antidepressantdrugs.¹⁶

An American professor is preparing to market a form of canine gene therapy, which would see dogs injected with substances which switch off the genes that regulate their muscle growth.

Prof Lee Sweeney, from the University of Pennsylvania, has pioneered research into gene transfer technology, a field in which poorly functioning and abnormal genes are manipulated, switched off or replaced.

Ten years ago he created "mighty mice" in the lab with enormous muscles and strength in old age. Now he says experiments on dogs have been so successful that he is preparing to market the treatments to owners of ageing pets across the United States.

He said: "We are now in the final stages of getting all the approvals to offer this through the veterinary hospital as a treatment to try to improve strength in pet dogs.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Researchers at Emory University in the U.S. have discovered dental pulp stem cells can stimulate growth and generation of several types of neural cells.

Findings from this study, released by the university on Tuesday, suggest dental pulp stem cells show promise for use in cell therapy and regenerative medicine, particularly therapies associated with the central nervous system.

Dental stem cells are adult stem cells, one of the two major divisions of stem cell research. Adult stem cells have the ability to regenerate many different types of cells, promising great therapeutic potential. Already, dental pulp stem cells have been used for regeneration of dental and craniofacial cells.

"Our study demonstrates the specific therapeutic potential of dental pulp stem cells and the broader potential for adult stem cells," say the researchers.

Doctors in Germany say a patient appears to have been cured of Aids by a bone marrow transplant from a donor who had a genetic resistance to HIV.

The researchers in Berlin said the man, who suffered from leukaemia and Aids, had shown no sign of either disease since the transplant two years ago.

The result is expected to encourage further interest in gene therapy as a treatment for Aids.

The clinic said since the transplant, tests on his bone marrow, blood and other organ tissues have all been clean.

"More than 20 months after the successful transplant, no HIV can be detected in the patient," the clinic said in a statement.

But leading HIV researcher, Dr Andrew Badley, of the Mayo Clinic in the American state of Minnesota, has warned a lot more tests are needed to prove the man is clear of HIV.

Two million people die of Aids every year and the virus is estimated to have infected 33 million people worldwide.

The startling case of an AIDS patient who underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat leukemia is stirring new hope that gene-therapy strategies on the far edges of AIDS research might someday cure the disease.

The patient, a 42-year-old American living in Berlin, is still recovering from his leukemia therapy, but he appears to have won his battle with AIDS. Doctors have not been able to detect the virus in his blood for more than 600 days, despite his having ceased all conventional AIDS medication. Normally when a patient stops taking AIDS drugs, the virus stampedes through the body within weeks, or days.

The breakthrough appears to be that Dr. Hütter, a soft-spoken hematologist who isn't an AIDS specialist, deliberately replaced the patient's bone marrow cells with those from a donor who has a naturally occurring genetic mutation that renders his cells immune to almost all strains of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

"I was very surprised," said the doctor, Gero Hütter.

Mavis has been terribly poorly with depression for months. What a ghastly illness. And the treatment on offer isn't very impressive: "Keep taking the pills." But they didn't work. "Keep taking the next lot of pills." This latest lot apparently might increase her suicidal feelings and desire to self-harm. Here she was, trying to hang on because of her children and because all her friends were desperately nagging her to keep going, and just as she felt she could barely tolerate living a minute longer, she is given pills that might make her feel worse.

"They all say that on the leaflet," said the consultant. No, they don't. The last lot didn't.

"Yes, they do. Keep taking the pills. And have some cognitive behavioural therapy." Mavis had to pay for it herself, because, as it is quick and cheap, all the NHS practitioners are madly busy. But she sprang at the opportunity - or rather crawled at it, because she could hardly move across her kitchen.

Doctors Told to Curb Use of Ritalin in Hyperactive Children

According to new British health guidelines, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be treated with drugs such as Ritalin only in severe cases and never when they are younger than 5.

There is widespread concern that such medication is used too freely to calm hyperactive children. The new policy is that most children with ADHD should instead be offered psychological therapy to improve their behavior, backed up by training to support their parents and teachers.

Up to 3 percent of school-age children in Britain may be affected by ADHD, but only about a third to a quarter of these would qualify as severe cases. The symptoms of ADHD include an inability to concentrate for long periods, hyperactive and restless behavior, and impulsive actions.

accidentally cured AIDS by providing a bone marrow transplant from an individual naturally resistant to the AIDS virus. From the Wall Street Journal article:
