For years, health care professionals in transplantation and other medical fields have struggled to address adolescent nonadherence, with little success. Many of the interventions proposed to help this age group have been cumbersome at best and awkward and potentially demeaning at worst. One potential solution, for example, has a clinician first identifying teenage patients who have been nonadherent, then increasing the frequency of their clinic visits and lecturing them about the importance of taking medications.

It is not hard to see why a teenager might not respond.

researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York published the results of a study showing that text messaging could significantly improve the rate of adherence among young liver transplant patients

investigators found that with text messaging, patients were more likely to take their medications

while 12 of the young people experienced rejection episodes in the previous year, only two did so during the study.

Distributors for new software that allows parents to spy on their children's text messages say they are still hopeful, as they try to get approval for their product.

The software, which allows parents to see every text message their child sends and receives, was due to be on sale in August, but the earliest it will now be available is early next year.

Civil libertarians and technology experts have deep concerns about the privacy implications of the product.

"I'm a dad of three - my children have grown up, the oldest is 20 years old - but we want the best for our children," he said.

UN to text message food vouchers to Iraqi refugees

Iraqi refugees in Syria will receive UN food vouchers through text messages on mobile phones, the World Food Programme said Tuesday.

In a test project targeting 1000 Iraqi refugee families, the United Nations agency will send a $US22 ($24) voucher every two months by SMS to each family, who will be provided with a special SIM card.

The beneficiary can then exchange the electronic voucher for rice, wheat flour, lentils, chickpeas, oil, canned fish, cheese and eggs at selected shops.

Addressing concerns about mobile phone ownership among the refugee population, WFP spokeswoman Emilia Casella said all the 130,000 Iraqi refugees currently receiving food aid from the agency in Syria have mobile phones.

"This if it bears fruit will potentially be continued," she added.

Casella said food vouchers in general allow people to "buy food when they need it as opposed to having to queue in long lines or go to distribution centres."

Obama's controversial and embattled "safe schools czar," Kevin Jennings, has helped fund a pornographic, anti-Catholic and sado-masochistic art display currently being shown at Harvard University, reports massresistance.org.

The Harvard exhibition, entitled, ACT UP New York: Activism, Art, and the AIDS Crisis, 1987-1993, chronicles the efforts of the homosexual civil disobedience group, Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP), through the graphic stickers, posters, and other visual media used as propaganda in the early years of the homosexualist movement.

Other posters include a variety of offensive images and messages. One image calls President Ronald Reagan a murderer and President George H.W. Bush a serial killer, for their perceived negligence in not using tax dollars to help those with AIDS.

In another part of the museum one finds text apparently describing an adult's violent sexual assault on a child.

This ad for Vodafone New Zeland is an impressive technical feat. They loaded up 1000 cell phones with ringtones for single instruments, and then built a system to send text messages to them in the correct order, to get them to perform a portion of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture. Considering the amount of delay that I usually notice when sending messages, I was pretty surprised that they claim to have performed this over their regular cell network. [via gizmodo]
