Is Nature your spiritual home?

    Do you feel a deep sense of peace and belonging and wonder in the midst of nature, in a forest, by the ocean, or on a mountain top? Are you speechless with awe when you look up at the sky on a clear moonless night and see the Milky Way strewn with stars as thick as sand on a beach?
     When you see breakers crashing on a rocky shore, or hear wind rustling in a poplar's leaves, are you uplifted by the energy and creativity of existence?
     Do you find it impossible to believe in supernatural beings, and difficult to conceive of anything more worthy of reverence than the beauty of nature or the power of the universe?
     If you answered yes to these questions, then you will feel thoroughly at home in the World Pantheist Movement. Our caring and celebratory approach focuses on nature rather than the supernatural, on what we can see and do and live out rather than on invisible entities that we can only imagine.

Towards a naturalistic spirituality

Terminology is the downfall of religions: the core of what we stand for is our beliefs (see the belief statement), not our name. For convenience, we use the name pantheism because it has a long and venerable history. But almost all of what we say applies to all the spiritual orientations that find shelter in the WPM. They go under the names of scientific pantheism, religious humanism, religious naturalism, religious atheism, deep ecology, nature-worship. They also include philosophical Taoism, modern Stoicism, Gaian religion, as well as to those forms of wicca and paganism that see magic and the gods as symbols rather than realities, also Western forms of Buddhism that celebrate nature and everyday life, and to those in Unitarian Universalism who do not believe in supernatural beings.

Some other terms like Jihadists, Militant Islamists, Radical Muslims, Extremist Muslims may not show, as they look, any relation to terrorism. But the term Islamic terrorists has frequently been used to equate Islam and Muslims with terrorism. The worst of these terms, perhaps, is Islamic Fascists, which has been used by President George W. Bush in some rhetoric referring to terrorists whom he described as Muslims. Some writers and politicians repeated the use of Islamic Fascists in an attempt to tarnish the adjective “Islamic” by associating it with an adjective derived from a despicable entity.

Fascism is an expression, which emerged prior to World War II in reference to Mussolini’s Regime in Italy. Fascism is defined by the Webster Standard Dictionary “an autocratic system of government, characterized by strict social and economic control, aggressive nationalistic policies often accompanied by racism, and the crushing of opposition.” Islamic Fascist is one of President Bush’s incomprehensible expressions in which he has espoused two incompatible adjectives to describe terrorists. As prolific terminology that labels terrorist, are being added, other incompatible oxymoron terms such as: Islamic Nazis or Islamic communists may, perhaps, be formulated. Only terrorists whom politicians wished to correlate with Islam were described by an adjective referring to their religion. The regimes in Italy and Germany of World War II were never named as Christian Fascists or Christian Nazis. Nor did any one call Timothy Mcveigh a Christian terrorist.

However, the seven townships to which it wants the Bedouin to move are already overcrowded and have poor living conditions - in stark contrast to the new communities being built nearby for Israelis relocating to the Negev.

DHS: Don't describe terrorists as jihadists

Federal agencies, including the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Counter Terrorism Center, are telling their people not to describe Islamic extremists as "jihadists" or "mujahedeen," according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. Lingo like "Islamo-fascism" is out, too.

The reason: Such words may actually boost support for radicals among Arab and Muslim audiences by giving them a veneer of religious credibility or by causing offense to moderates.

U.S. officials may be "unintentionally portraying terrorists, who lack moral and religious legitimacy, as brave fighters, legitimate soldiers or spokesmen for ordinary Muslims," says a Homeland Security report. It's entitled "Terminology to Define the Terrorists: Recommendations from American Muslims."

"We are communicating with, not confronting, our audiences. Don't insult or confuse them with pejorative terms such as 'Islamo-fascism,' which are considered offensive by many Muslims."

November 01, 2006 (Network World) -- Last week, a handful of employees at Dekalb Medical Center in Decatur, Ga., received e-mails saying they were being laid off. The subject line read "Urgent - employment issue," and the sender listed on the message was at dekalb.org, which is the domain the medical center uses. The e-mail contained a link to a Web site that claimed to offer career-counseling information.

And so a few employees, concerned about their employment status and no doubt miffed about being laid off via e-mail, clicked on the link to learn more and unwittingly downloaded a keylogger program that was lurking at the site.

Score another one for spammers.

"I don't think we were the only ones targeted by this, I've talked to other local hospitals and they've gotten it, too," says Finney. "It's going to get ugly. Spammers are going to get stealthier and more targeted -- these recent e-mails had terminology specific to healthcare, so they knew we are a hospital."

"Schizophrenia" should be dropped, say experts

LONDON (Reuters) - Mental health experts called on Monday for the term schizophrenia to be dropped, saying it has no scientific validity, is imprecise and stigmatizing.

"It is a harmful concept," said Professor Marius Romme, a visiting professor of social psychiatry at the University of Central England in Birmingham.

He added that symptoms such as delusions, hearing voices and hallucinations are not the results of the illness but may be reactions to traumatic and troubling events in life.

Schizophrenia affects about 1 percent of people in the United States and Britain. Treatments such as atypical antipsychotic drugs focus on eliminating the symptoms. But the drugs can cause side effects such as weight gain, an increased risk of diabetes and sexual dysfunction.

Other psychiatrists agree that schizophrenia is an unsatisfactory term that conveys bizarreness but they are concerned that discarding the term could lead to problems classifying patients with psychosis.

He suggested replacing the term schizophrenia with the label dopamine dysregulation disorder, which he said more accurately reflects what is happening in the brain of someone who is psychotic.

Firefox 3 Gets some FUEL

Mozilla's relentless march toward the release of Firefox 3 continues with the release of Gran Paradiso Alpha 4.

Gran Paradiso is Mozilla's code name for the Firefox 3 development effort. For the fourth development milestone, Mozilla developers have included a few new features to improve the browsing experience for users and the development options for developers.

The biggest new addition is something called the FUEL (Firefox User Extension Library) JavaScript library . FUEL according to Mozilla's description is a JavaScript Library designed to help developers build extensions using terminology and interfaces that are familiar to them.

JavaScript has become increasingly popular again with rise of AJAX. JavaScript as a language is also expected to get a boost in Firefox 3 with an update to an as yet unreleased future version of JavaScript, currently Firefox 2.0 includes JavaScript 1.7.

First the good news: the government’s annual hunger report shows a slight decline last year in the number of citizens in need of food. Now the bad news: the annual hunger report has dropped the word “hunger.”

Instead, there were 35 million Americans last year suffering from “low food security,” meaning they chronically lacked the resources to be able to eat enough food. Of these, 10.8 million lived with “very low food security,” meaning they were the hungriest among the hungry, so to speak.

The government insists that no Orwellian plot is in the works to mask a national blight. The goal has been to cut what we’ll call the hungry households to no more than 6 percent of the population. But hungry people persist at nearly twice that rate, despite the slight drop last year. To the extent that more public empathy is needed to prod a stronger attack on low food security, we opt for “hunger” as a most stirring word.

clipper's remarks: It's futile to spend too much time answering the creationist/ID claims that pop up here from time to time when all of them have already been addressed and debunked by the scientific community in overwhelming detail. This continually updated index addresses every single creationist/ID claim that has been made to date with short responses and hyperlinks to papers and references with detailed responses. (Most claims go back decades, if not centuries...there is very little new in the way of creationist claims any more. ID so far has made no new claims that creationists hadn't already made in the 60s/70s with different terminology.)

While this a handy resource for debates on origins, its primary worth is as a doorway to education in the entire field of modern science and the scientific process, with a focus on the historical fields of evolution, anthropology, biology, and geology...with a healthy dose of religion and philosophy of science thrown in as well.

Local gossips referred to Dickinson as "the Myth," expressing fascination at her "withdrawal," her habit of wearing only white, and her enigmatic notes accompanying gifts of food or flowers.

When the poet's work was published four years after her death in 1886, reviewers expressed surprise that a seemingly eventless life could generate such passion.

Her letters explaining why she could not see people suggest that she avoided those she loved because they affected her too powerfully.

So is “enhanced interrogation” torture? One way to answer this question is to examine history. The phrase has a lineage. Verschärfte Verneh-mung, enhanced or intensified interrogation, was the exact term innovated by the Gestapo to describe what became known as the “third degree”. It left no marks. It included hypothermia, stress positions and long-time sleep deprivation.

The United States prosecuted it as a war crime in Norway in 1948. The victims were not in uniform – they were part of the Norwegian insurgency against the German occupation – and the Nazis argued, just as Cheney has done, that this put them outside base-line protections (subsequently formalised by the Geneva conventions).

One day America will come back– the America that defends human rights, the America that would never torture detainees, the America that leads the world in barring the inhuman and barbaric.
