For those of you unfamiliar with New Orleans culture, a good place to start is that there are basically only two kinds of people in New Orleans.

The first is those folks that live, as one [of Bunny's] cartoon characters puts it, in Gatorland -- "Yeah, you know ... ova dere across Magazine where dey all wear dem shoits wid lil' gators on 'em." Otherwise knows as Uptown, you can tell folks from Gatorland in the cartoons because they speak English. Another clue is that all skinny people are from Gatorland, although not all people from Gatorland are skinny. And they often have 59 rows of teeth.

The other kind of New Orleanian is Everyone Else, dose folks dat talk normal.

there are oodles of ways that the locals pronounce the name of their beloved City.

<new or-LEENS> is generally a no-no.

Here are the major standard local pronunciations of the City's name: <new OR-l@ns>, <new AW-l@ns>, <new OR-lee-'@ns> <new AH-lee-@ns>, <nyoo AH-lee-'@ns>.

Many frequent fliers can recite the mandatory pre-takeoff safety briefing along with the flight attendant delivering it. What they cannot do, however, is replicate the odd cadence and ultra-formal speech patterns known as airline English. Airline English is an unusual blend of standard English and airline jargon spoken almost exclusively by airline crew members, flight attendants and pilots.

One example of airline English is the nautical terminology associated with air travel. Passengers do not put their suitcases into the overhead cabinets, they "stow" their "cargo" into the overhead "holds." The staff on board an airplane are actually "crew members" who answer to a captain. Flight attendants routinely use this nautical terminology in complete sentences, which can be a little confusing to first time passengers.

Airline English can also be the result of repetitive social greetings, particularly the mandated "goodbye" to disembarking passengers.

However, the seven townships to which it wants the Bedouin to move are already overcrowded and have poor living conditions - in stark contrast to the new communities being built nearby for Israelis relocating to the Negev.

What Is A Romantic Friendship?

Local gossips referred to Dickinson as "the Myth," expressing fascination at her "withdrawal," her habit of wearing only white, and her enigmatic notes accompanying gifts of food or flowers.

When the poet's work was published four years after her death in 1886, reviewers expressed surprise that a seemingly eventless life could generate such passion.

Her letters explaining why she could not see people suggest that she avoided those she loved because they affected her too powerfully.

Caroll Smith-Rosenberg has shown that nineteenth-century women's friendships lent themselves to a wide range of expression, so that letters that raised no eyebrows then seem erotically charged to us.

Conservatives Do Not Have A Monopoly On Religion

clipper's remarks: These days the Christian Conservatives have worked really really hard to portray the left as secular enemies of the faith, and spread the myth that one cannot be a good Christian and a political liberal, that the left-wing agenda of using the government to care for the needy, defend freedoms and protect the weak is somehow in fundamental conflict with the teachings of Jesus.

Now, I normally don't like to tell Christians how they should interpret their faith, and I'm not going to start now, but I think any Christian should seriously consider the following question: What in the teachings of Jesus would condone discrimination against social pariahs (like gays)? What in the anecdotes in the New Testament would encourage the savage me-first capitalism of Bush's Republican Party?

As an outsider, I don't see the connection. Actually, I'd have a sincere interest in how Christianity has become so conflated with conservativism, so if anyone cares to explain their side, I'm all ears.

Walter Rauschenbusch, the leader of the Social Gospel movement of the early 20th century, did just that in “Christianity and the Social Crisis,” published 100 years ago this year. Although steeped in church history and riddled with obscure terminology like “Ebionitic” (a reference to Jewish followers of Jesus who, in sympathy with the Sermon on the Mount, chose lives of poverty), the book quickly became a best seller. The Federal Council of Churches (which later changed its name to the National Council of Churches), founded one year after its publication, spread Rauschenbusch’s message of social reform. It was one of two books — along with Upton Sinclair’s novel “The Jungle,” published a year earlier — most responsible for tempering the rule of rapacious capitalism and helping Theodore Roosevelt to define a new progressive agenda. As late as the 1950s, one aspiring Baptist preacher read it and wrote that it “left an indelible imprint on my thinking.” His name was Martin Luther King Jr.

The law at issue went through the California legislature as SB 777, and now bans in school texts and activities any discriminatory bias against those who have chosen alternative sexual lifestyles, Meredith Turney, legislative liaison for Capitol Resource Institute, said.

Karen England, chief of CRI, told WND that the law is not a list of banned words, including "mom" and "dad." But she said the requirement is that the law bans discriminatory bias and the effect will be to ban such terminology.

"Having 'mom' and 'dad' promotes a discriminatory bias. You have to either get rid of 'mom' and 'dad' or include everything when talking about [parental issues]," she said. "They [promoters of sexual alternative lifestyles] do consider that discriminatory."

So is “enhanced interrogation” torture? One way to answer this question is to examine history. The phrase has a lineage. Verschärfte Verneh-mung, enhanced or intensified interrogation, was the exact term innovated by the Gestapo to describe what became known as the “third degree”. It left no marks. It included hypothermia, stress positions and long-time sleep deprivation.

The United States prosecuted it as a war crime in Norway in 1948. The victims were not in uniform – they were part of the Norwegian insurgency against the German occupation – and the Nazis argued, just as Cheney has done, that this put them outside base-line protections (subsequently formalised by the Geneva conventions).

One day America will come back– the America that defends human rights, the America that would never torture detainees, the America that leads the world in barring the inhuman and barbaric.

From food, to medical care, charities, housing, religion, anything that affects our existence is somehow wrapped or sprinkled with chicanery. I have always believed, when a buck is to be made we all should display caution. Whether it be the tests doctors send you on or the imports coming in from merciless countries, we should all feel apprehension and not just blindly do what the so called benevolent powers tell us to do. In a profit driven society $$$ reins supreme. But it seems of all the ideologies the human race has come up with, capitalism appears to be the only one that can somewhat work with the (although high) lowest of suffering for the people held to such an ideology. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean we should all turn into sheep, following and doing exactly what we are told, without question.
