"What we are doing now is trying to make the model better. What we showed is just one color, what we are doing now is trying to use three colors. The original display was four inches by four inches and now we're going for something at least as big as a computer screen."

There are no more great barriers to overcome now, he said.

The breakthrough has made some long-time researchers of the technology believe that it could now come to fruition.

Clip Source: www.cnn.com

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/Silkweaver/512/416EB311-4BB2-4E37-8F43-6937950F480D.jpg" alt="The future of television? Spies don't put info on the Internet and sell imagery. We're an Earth-imaging satellite, and we can sell our imagery to customers around the world who have a need to map and measure and monitor things on the ground. We're commercializing a technology that was once only in the hands of the governments. Just like the internet, just like GPS, just like telecom – all invented by the government. And now we are on the front end of the spear that is commercializing this technology.”

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

The picture shows a high resolution view of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

Since its launch, on September 6th this year, Google's top-notch satellite has constantly been fine-tuned in order to get even more accurate results. The ultra-high definition images that it is able to provide make GeoEye-1 the world's best commercial satellite.

The state-of-the-art device's first public attempt consisted of a top-down accurate view of Pennsylvania's Kutztown University

Google's next satellite, GeoEye-2, will be able to provide 25-centimeter resolution images, but Google will still be restricted to their 50-centimeter limitations. The launch of GeoEye-2 is set for sometime in 2011 or 2012.

<clipSource>http://news.softpedia.com/news/GeoEye-1-Google-039-s-Satellite-Sends-First-Image-95313.shtml</clipSource>

Cuba's contribution to public health

clipped by: gingembre
clipper's remarks: If Cuba can do this, why can't the USA and Canada?

Clip Source: story.brazilsun.com

Cuba breaks national record with 200,000 medical students
Brazil Sun
Thursday 9th October, 2008
(IANS)

Cuba broke its record for domestic and foreign students studying medical sciences in the communist island country, with a total of 200,000 this year, the Communist Party daily Granma reported citing public health ministry sources.

Close to 23,000 of the students are foreigners, most of them coming from developing countries, Granma said, claiming that this is a result of the Cuban government's 'traditional policy of internationalistic solidarity.'

Cuba holds its free health system as a flagship government programme. At Cuban universities medical sciences include medicine, stomatology (study of mouth and its diseases), nursing, health technology and health psychology.

Cuba has four medical science institutes, 24 schools of medicine, four of stomatology and four devoted to nursing and technology, Granma said. More than 26,000 people teach medical science courses on the island.

Tags: cuba, medicine

<clipSource>http://story.brazilsun.com/index.php/ct/9/cid/80f72651582f2c13/id/416226/cs/1/</clipSource>

2057 - The World

clipped by: Michael Black
clipper's remarks: Educational video about what scientists and technology developers have accomplish and plan to have accomplished by 2057

Clip Source: video.google.com

Tags: education

<clipSource>http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7582986795752940587&ei=M2DvSKXxH4r82wKi-onvDg&q=2057+the+world</clipSource>

history of the computer

clipped by: blueviolet
clipper's remarks: "Everyone knows that technology is more expensive when it first comes out. Rocket engines are provided through multiple engine manufacturers who serve as technology partners to the League, augmenting its own staff in the primary technology areas of airframe, avionics and engine integration. The CLIX bicycle wheel release system,
winner of a Eurobike Design Award, is an
innovative quick release system that makes
taking your bikes front wheel on and off
faster, easier and more intuitive.

The development of this new technology was
inspired by the frequent misuse of the traditional
quick release system. Bicycles with the CLIX QR
from CLIX Systems, Inc. are revolutionizing the
cycling industry from the casual rider to the
performance racer.

So far, no commercial wireless system can beat the raw speed of optical fiber, which can carry tens of gigabits per second.

One way to achieve faster speeds is to harness the millimeter-wavelength frequency of the wireless spectrum, although this usually requires expensive and very complex equipment. Now, engineers at Battelle, a research and development firm based in Columbus, OH, have come up with a simpler way to send data through the air with millimeter-wave technology. Earlier this year, in field tests of a prototype point-to-point system, the team was able to send a 10.6-gigabit-per-second signal between antennas 800 meters apart. And more recently, the researchers demonstrated a 20-gigabit-per-second signal in the lab.

Tags: technology, wireless, communication, network

<clipSource>http://www.technologyreview.com/communications/21464/?a=f</clipSource>

The World's Greatest Aviation Innovations

clipped by: Mohir
clipper's remarks: 9. The flying wing -- Yves Rossy keeps breaking records and defying expectations with his 8-foot-diameter, carbon composite flying wing. Last week he made a successful 13 minute, 125 mph trip across the English Channel.

10. Stealth aircraft -- What's cooler than a plane that can outsmart radar? Because the surfaces of a stealth are designed to absorb radio waves or reflect them away from the receiver, stealth planes can sneak in and sneak out undetected. Too bad they're so expensive: The 21 plane B-2 program cost over $45 billion.
11. Jetway -- Another one most of us don't think about is the long covered walkway the connects our departure gate with our plane.
12. Deicing -- Ice buildup is the cause of many fatal aircraft accidents, which is why applying monopropylene de-icing fluid to wings pre-flight has become standard operating procedure.

Clip Source: blog.wired.com

It seems all news is bad news when it comes to aviation these days, and it's too bad because it overshadows just how wonderful it is that we can fly. Think about it -- 100 years ago, few could imagine it. Today we take it for granted.

1. Cabin pressurization -- The average passenger doesn't think about cabin pressurization until their yellow safety masks fall from the ceiling, but the reality is that if the technology hadn't been developed during WWII, we wouldn't be able to fly much above 10,000 feet.

2. Black Box -- Morbid but essential, the black box was invented in the mid-1950s,

3. Radar -- Sure, the airlines are dying to replace it with GPS technology, but for decades it's been radar that helps air traffic controllers locate and track planes up to 200 miles away.

5.
