He was soon working with a 20-powered telescope, and later that year, he proved that the moon's surface was rough, contrary to the prevailing view. Galileo went on to become one of the most recognized names in scientific history. But why do we call him by his first name only?

Because that's how he referred to himself. At the time of Galileo's birth in 1564, surnames were optional in Italy. In daily interactions, an Italian would use the name his parents gave him at birth—what we'd now call a first name—and, if further clarification were required, add on his father's name (like di Antonio, or "son of Antonio"), his birthplace (Romano, or "from Rome"), his occupation (Pannetierre, meaning "baker"), or a traditional family surname (if one existed, like Galilei).

Tags: galileio, italy, names, science

<clipSource>http://www.slate.com/id/2225718/?from=rss</clipSource>

What Else Happened During Woodstock

clipped by: ColoradoRight
clipper's remarks: So when you hear talk of the glories of Woodstock—the so-called “defining event of a generation”—keep in mind those 109 GIs who served nobly yet are never lauded by the illustrious spokesmen for the “Sixties Generation.”

Clip Source: www.vfw.org

With the 40th anniversary of the ‘60s cherished rock concert, the so-called “Sixties Generation” remembers fondly those four days in August 1969. Instead, VFW magazine commemorates the 109 Americans killed in Vietnam then.

So 40 years later, let’s finally look at those 109 Americans who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam on Aug. 15, 16, 17 and 18, 1969.

They mirrored the population of the time. A full 92% were white (seven of whom had Spanish surnames) and 8% black. Some 67% were Protestants; 28% Catholic. A disproportionate number—more than one-third—hailed from the South. More than two-thirds were single; nearly one-third married. Not surprisingly, the vast majority (91%) were under the age of 30, with 78% between the ages of 18 and 22.

Of the four days, Aug. 18—the last day of “peace and love” in the Catskills when the 50,000 diehards departed after the final act—was the worst for the men in Vietnam. Thirty-five of them died on that one miserable day.

Tags: americans, soldiers, deaths, remembrance

<clipSource>http://www.vfw.org/index.cfm?fa=news.magDtl&dtl=1&mid=5144</clipSource>

Just Be Honest About Your Bigotry, OK?

clipped by: ratilfar
clipper's remarks: But neither story has proffered that up. So how do these commenters know the couples in question are illegal immigrants?

Well, by their last names, of course. Santiago, Rocha and Barron must be indicative of the 100% ne'er-do-wells that crawl under or over a fence in the dark, dark night to invade the soil of the U.S., fostering hate in their hearts and evil in their veins, ready to do horribly heinous crimes at a moment's notice.

According to 2007 data from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, 21.7 percent of maltreated children nationwide are from African-American families; 20.8 percent are from hispanic families; and 46.1 percent are from white families.

So really, in the U.S., being from a white family nearly doubles your chances of being maltreated or abused.

Clip Source: open.salon.com

In the span of two days, there have been two reports in the Dallas Morning News of children being neglected and abused by their parents.

Both sets of children were stomach-turningly betrayed by their parents. One group of children were starved and locked in a tiny motel bathroom for hours at a time by their stepfather, while their mother allowed it. The second set were found by authorities after an anonymous caller reported strong fumes coming from their hotel room. When police arrived, they found two adults who had been huffing paint fumes all day in a 300 square foot room, not only intoxicating themselves, but their children.

Besides the places of residence, the two stories had something in common - the families had Latin surnames. Immediately, commenters on both stories began upping the anti-immigration rhetoric, insisting that this is the way of illegal immigrants.

They do bad things to their children.

Tags: racism, bigotry, immigration, statistics, children, crime

<clipSource>http://open.salon.com/blog/bethany_anderson/2009/07/22/just_be_honest_about_your_bigotry_ok</clipSource>

family history of bamburgs

clipped by: clipmarkbob

Clip Source: boards.rootsweb.com

Is there anyone out there who can tell me about my grandparents?
Mr_M, some attribute the introduction of surnames to the Normans in the 11th Century AD/CE. Prior to that, naming conventions generally used the first name. Individuals were typically identified by:

<First Name> son/daughter of <Father's First Name>; or,

<First Name> of <Place Name>

With this in mind, Jesus would have been known as Jesus son of Joseph.

Joseph would have been known as Joseph son of Jacob (according to Matthew).

Mary would have been called Mary daughter of Eli. Luke calls Mary's father Heli, which is the Greek for the Hebrew Eli. Another apocryphal gospel describes Mary's parents as Joachim and Anna. Joachim is considered a variant of Eliachim or Elohim or Eli or Heli.

A study found the number of people with the name Cock shrank to 785 last year from 3,211 in 1881, those called Balls fell to 1,299 from 2,904 and the number of Deaths were reduced to 605 from 1,133.

People named Smellie decreased by 70 percent, Dafts by 51 percent, Gotobeds by 42 percent, Shufflebottoms by 40 percent, and Cockshotts by 34 percent, said Richard Webber, visiting professor of geography at King's College, London.

The results of her research have implications in the fields of forensics, genealogy, epidemiology and the history of surnames.

Dr King said: "In Britain, surnames are passed down from father to son. A piece of our DNA, the Y chromosome, is the one part of our genetic material that confers maleness and is passed, like surnames, from father to son. Therefore, a link could exist between a man's surname and the type of Y chromosome he carries. A simple link between name and Y chromosome could in principle connect all men sharing a surname into one large family tree.
