THE former American secretary of state Colin Powell has revealed that he spent 2½ hours vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq and believes today’s conflict cannot be resolved by US forces.

“I tried to avoid this war,” Powell said at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. “I took him through the consequences of going into an Arab country and becoming the occupiers.

Powell has become increasingly outspoken about the level of violence in Iraq, which he believes is in a state of civil war. “The civil war will ultimately be resolved by a test of arms,” he said. “It’s not going to be pretty to watch, but I don’t know any way to avoid it. It is happening now.”

He added: “It is not a civil war that can be put down or solved by the armed forces of the United States.” All the military could do, Powell suggested, was put “a heavier lid on this pot of boiling sectarian stew”

clipper's remarks: The level of European concern about the US has remained broadly consistent over the past year. In 11 previous polls dating back to July 2006 the proportion of respondents considering the US a threat to stability has ranged between 28 per cent and 38 per cent.

The latest poll comes in the wake of the “surge” that has increased US forces in Iraq to about 160,000 troops, but which has not been accompanied by political breakthroughs or a dramatic reduction of violence.

Europeans consistently regard the US as the biggest threat to world stability, a new poll reveals on Monday

A survey carried out in June by Harris Research for the Financial Times shows that 32 per cent of respondents in five European countries regard the US as a bigger threat than any other state.

In the US itself, North Korea and Iran are seen as the biggest risks. However, the youngest US respondents share the Europeans’ view that theirs is the biggest threat, with 35 per cent of American 16- to 24-year-olds identifying it as the chief danger to stability.

Bush’s second term the administration has also embarked on a more consensual international approach to issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and North Korea’s nuclear bomb.

But the poll shows that the European public still considers Mr Bush a risk.

How comfy we are all in the United States, as we engage in living-room debates about the US occupation of Iraq, whether "we" are bringing them freedom and whether their freedom is really worth the sacrifice of so many of our men and women. We talk about whether war aims have really been achieved, how to exit gracefully, or whether we need a hyper-surge to finish this whole business once and for all.

But there's one thing Americans don't talk about: the lives of Iraqis, or, rather, the deaths of Iraqis.

But when "we" cause the calamity, suddenly there is silence.

Well, it's about time that we think about the numbers, even though the US military has decided that body counts are not worth their time.

Here is the grisly bottom line: more than one million people have been murdered in Iraq since the US invasion

We are the good guys, right?

Why won’t we face this? Why won't we take responsibility?

Why?

Bush Allies Warn Iraq Vote Could Harm War Plan, GOP Future

Top White House officials are scrambling to prevent a showdown over the Iraq war that could tear apart the Republican Party and severely undermine President Bush's plan to increase U.S. troop levels.

White House officials are pleading with GOP senators to oppose any congressional resolution that specifically condemns Bush's effort to escalate the war effort in coming months, congressional sources said Friday morning. In private conversations, the officials are telling senators that the resolution would demoralize U.S. troops and hurt the GOP politically for years to come.

Bush allies are arguing that Republicans will damage their individual political interests as well. Their logic is that there is no anti-war constituency inside the Republican Party, pointing specifically to Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., a potential presidential candidate who has opposed the surge but not gained much traction with party activists. "That's a flat argument," the senior aide said. "That does not work."

The Bush White House is described as panicked by the prospects of mass defections and open to compromise. They have cause for concern: at least six Republicans, including Sen. John Warner of Virginia, have signed resolutions opposing the surge. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nev., has not committed to a vote on the resolution next week. He is negotiating compromise language between Foreign Relations Chairman Joseph Biden, D-Del., and Warner, the panel's ranking Republican and an influential voice on military matters, to entice more GOP senators to support the measure.

The rate of killings of US troops in Iraq has been on the decline, down by 60 percent, since the launch of the new security measures in Baghdad, according to statistics revealed by the Multi-National Force -Iraq Combined Press Information Centre.

Only 17 members of the US military in Iraq have been killed since February 14 till March 13, compared to 42 from January 13 to February 13; the rate was on the decline during the first month of the security crackdown, compared to a month before.

Two of the 17 soldiers died at US Baghdad camps of non-combat causes.

The US army in Iraq had earlier said that sectarian fighting and violence in Baghdad had dropped sharply, by about 80 percent, since the launch of the plan.

Why is it that Drudge had to find this on a foreign outlet rather than on any American news source?

The information comes from the DoD. It was fed to the media. Why is it only a Kuwaiti outfit publishes it?

Psychic Vampires

When an attack takes place, the Psychic Vampire receives an energy surge while the victim experiences fatigue.

People who "suck" the energy of others are called "psychic vampires." This "sucking" takes place when one's energy is depleted and needs to be replenished so he or she "sucks" the energy of another person. Has anyone noticed that virtually every one of the players, political and military, have already begun chipping away at the September milestone? That, shock and horror, they begin to talk of the urgent need for American troops to remain in Iraq at the present level of 160,000 or maybe even more until 2009?

The Iraqis bide their time and dream, as ever, sweet dreams of bloody revenge and communal slaughter and laugh at the to-do list of impossible American benchmarks. We talk of Iraqi "national" goals while the Iraqis talk of old, dark tribal and sectarian goals and we pass in the night like so many camel caravans.

All of the forecast models predict Ike will hit somewhere north of Corpus Christi to near the Texas-Louisiana border.

Hurricane force winds extend 115 miles from Ike's center and tropical storm force winds extend 255 miles.

"About 1 a.m. Saturday it's going to begin to make landfall as a Category 3 -- it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's a Category 4," Yanez said. "It is going to spend much of Saturday moving out of here."

A 15- to 22-foot storm surge is expected wherever Ike makes landfall.

"That's the most dangerous part of a hurricane," Yanez said.

Isolated tornados are expected on the east side, commonly called the "dirty side," of the storm. Some wind gusts in Houston could reach 100 mph.

Instead of focusing on personal Web sites and blogs, UA psychology researchers used stream of consciousness writings in their research to determine a more accurate measure of individual personlity traits.

Stream of consciousness, a century-old literary device, is helping University of Arizona researchers get to the core of individual personality.

But UA assistant psychology professor Matthias R. Mehl and Shannon E. Holleran, a doctoral degree candidate in psychology, wanted to delve into the difficult-to-measure, private nuances of personality. So they set out on a study using stream of consciousness writing.

They found that reading private thoughts manifest in a writing surge resulted in the ability to make “surprisingly accurate” measures of a person’s personality traits.

Mehl said “the general sense is that just by looking at someone’s picture or Web site or by reading somebody’s blog, you can get a very good sense of what that person is like.”

That may not be entirely true.

So how might we alter our experience of time? The first option might be to manipulate brain chemistry, in particular the dopamine system. Patients with disorders of this system, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's or schizophrenia, also suffer disturbances in their perception of time. It turns out this is because their neurochemistry - specifically their dopamine system - somehow alters the speed of their subjective internal clock. "Schizophrenics have too much dopamine activity in the brain so their clock is so fast that it feels like the whole world is crazy," says Meck. "If you block dopamine receptors with drugs you can bring the speed of their internal clock back to an acceptable level."

Recreational drugs that affect the dopamine system can also alter our perception of time. Stimulants such as cocaine, caffeine and nicotine make time pass faster, while sedatives such as Valium and cannabis slow it down.

Feeling rushed by the modern world is nothing new. People have been fighting back since the industrial revolution. But as the pace of life escalates ever upwards, more and more people are striving to slow down and regain a sense of control over time.

Groups dedicated to slow living, such as Germany's Society for the Deceleration of Time and Italy's Slow Food, Slow Cities, and Slow Sex movements, report a surge in interest. "It's not just hippies or worn-out baby boomers," says journalist Carl Honoré, author of In Praise of Slow: How a worldwide movement is challenging the cult of speed (Orion, 2004). "It's young people in their 20s. These are people on the front line trying to get in touch with their inner tortoise, and I think that's very revealing. We all want the technology, but we don't want every moment of the day to be a race against the clock."
