Dozens of UN peacekeepers punished for abuses

The United Nations says at least 50 peacekeepers have been punished by national authorities in the last three years for committing sexual abuses while on UN missions.

The data, released Thursday, comes after repeated requests from media for the punishments meted out to peacekeepers accused of rape and other abuses in conflict areas such as Congo, Haiti, Sudan and Ivory Coast.

The UN said the punishments ranged from reduction in military rank to eight months imprisonment.

No data on the nationalities or identities of the peacekeepers were revealed.

The UK arm of the human rights charity Save the Children released a report in 2008 that found more than 50 per cent of 250 boys and girls living in towns in Haiti, Sudan and the Ivory Coast said they knew of at least one incident of coerced sex and sexual touching involving boys and girls in their communities.

Southern Sudan leader Salva Kiir has made his strongest call for full independence when the region's status is decided at a referendum due in 2011.

He said voting for unity with northern Sudan would make southerners "second class citizens" in their own land.

A referendum in the now semi-autonomous oil-rich south was part of the 2005 deal that ended decades of civil war.

"When you reach your ballot boxes the choice is yours. You want to vote for unity, so that you become a second-class (citizen) in your own country, that is your choice," he told the congregation at St Teresa's Catholic Cathedral in Juba.

In the past, the Khartoum government had insisted that 75% of voters must agree to independence.

Mr Machar said all southerners would be allowed to vote, including those in Khartoum and those outside Sudan.

Hussein was jailed in September after refusing to pay a fine for the same offence but released after a day in prison after the country's journalists' union came up with the payment.

Two Sudanese women were sentenced yesterday to 20 lashes for 'indecently' wearing trousers.

The case came weeks after a similar case sparked worldwide controversy.

The two women were arrested at the same party as Lubna Hussein, a former journalist who was also charged with wearing trousers and who publicised her case as part of a campaign against Sudan's public order laws.

Judge Hassan Mohamed Ali sentenced each woman to 20 lashes and a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds (£66) in Khartoum East court on Thursday afternoon.

The women's supporters told journalists the punishment, often carried out immediately after a conviction, was postponed after the women launched an appeal.

Hussein, who was at the court on Thursday said the latest sentencing showed her campaign still had a long way to go.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security agents on Wednesday arrested a Sudanese man who tried to hijack an airliner armed with a plastic knife, security sources said.

The passenger grabbed the knife from his meal tray after the Egypt Air plane left Turkish airspace bound for Cairo. He then demanded the crew divert the aircraft to Jerusalem.

Egyptian onboard security officers reacted immediately, calmed the passenger down and arrested him while the flight continued without disruption. No one was hurt in the incident.

It was not immediately clear what his motives were.

FREED aid worker Sharon Commins was embraced in a wave of love when she returned to the arms of her family early today.

Last night the Commins family finally had their daughter Sharon back in their arms after 106 days in captivity in Sudan and they simply couldn’t contain their joy.

Asked what she wanted most, she said: “ Champagne, eggs Benedict and a bed that doesn’t smell like onions.”

And to sleep “for more than three minutes at a time”.

Scant details of her ordeal have already emerged, including mock executions, where the women were forced to kneel on the ground and shots were fired around them.

She also hinted that she and fellow victim – Ugandan Kawuki – were subjected to physical violence, but did not want to speak about individual incidents.

She did not know that they were set to be released until 15 minutes before they were put into a car and driven away.

Marc Sageman is a forensic and clinical psychiatrist who has
served as a Naval flight surgeon, then as a CIA officer who between
1987 and 1991 was in Islamabad and New Delhi directing the U.S.

multilateral program with the Afghan Mujahedin.

He
concludes that “effective counter-terrorism strategy [is] on the
brink of completely eliminating al Qaeda.” There will be no
organization to return. This is the result of effective
international and domestic intelligence cooperation as well as good
police work. So why, one asks, is the U.S. expanding its war in

Afghanistan?

Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs. The key to MSF’s ability to act independently in response to a crisis is its independent funding. Eighty-nine percent of MSF's overall funding (and 100 percent of MSF-USA's funding) comes from private sources, not governments. In 2006, MSF had more than three million individual donors and private funders worldwide.

MSF is neutral. The organization does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care on the basis of need alone, and pushes for increased independent access to victims of conflict as required under international humanitarian law.

At times, MSF may speak out publicly in an effort to bring a forgotten crisis to public attention, to alert the public to abuses occurring beyond the headlines, or to challenge the diversion of humanitarian aid for political interests.

Greed by corrupt corporations and individuals over those resources has driven political instability since the 1960's. That instability allowed terrorists from Rwanda and Uganda to fuel violence in the border areas.

Like Darfur in the Sudan, if we look aside, the violence picks up again. Please don't look away until the world agrees to stay the course and end the violence.

US military deaths in Afghanistan region at 779

As of Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at least 779 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Of those, the military reports 600 were killed by hostile action.

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 72 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, three were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.
