It was also a success in the U.S., reaching #3 on the Billboard album charts (#1 and #2 were Hotel California by The Eagles, and the soundtrack to the Barbara Streisand film A Star Is Born). video collective that's in St. Paul to document the policing of the protests
around this week's Republican National Convention.

We are suffering a preemptive video arrest. For those that don't know,
I-Witness Video was remarkably successful in exposing police misconduct
and outright perjury by police during the 2004 RNC. Out of 1800 arrests,
at least 400 were overturned based solely on video evidence which
contradicted sworn statements which were fabricated by police officers.
It seems that the house arrest we are now under and the possible threat of
the seizure of our computers and video cameras is a result of the 2004
success.

We are asking the public to contact the office of St. Paul Mayor Chris
Coleman at 651-266-8510 to stop this house arrest, this gross intimidation by police officers, and the
detention of media activists and reporters.

Tags: repression, government, freedom, constitution, evidence, video, you tube

<clipSource>http://iwitnessvideo.info/blog/index.html</clipSource>

For most people college is a waste of time

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

Imagine that America had no system of post-secondary education, and you were a member of a task force assigned to create one from scratch. We will attach an economic reward to it that seldom has anything to do with what has been learned. We will urge large numbers of people who do not possess adequate ability to try to achieve the goal, wait until they have spent a lot of time and money, and then deny it to them. We will stigmatize everyone who doesn't meet the goal. We will call the goal a "BA."

You would conclude that your colleague was cruel, not to say insane. It's a push by SNCF to expand its contactless payment system, and would allow customers to plug their train passes into a PC at home. There they could add money to their account, avoiding the rush at the station to dump money onto a card as the train is pulling away (something we're very familiar with here in New York City). On the train, the fare would be deducted from the card either by an RFID reader or by an attendant with a handheld tool.

Depending on the program's success, SNCF may try to have all their customers using the system by 2010. The closest thing we have to it here in the States are bank promotions that allow you to marry your metro card with your bank account. Then again, Europe isn't as train-retarded as the US, where cross-country trains are barely used, save for some commercial interests.

Tags: rfid, efficiency

<clipSource>http://dvice.com/archives/2008/08/french_train_ri.php</clipSource>

Corruption seen as grave threat to Iraqi democracy

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: At first I thought that the Iraquis had been quick learners, but it is a way of survival in countries where incomes are low due to greed

Clip Source: www.reuters.com

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Corruption is a grave and gathering threat to Iraq's fragile democracy and its strides in curtailing bloodshed, a senior U.S. official in Baghdad said.

Unchecked, corruption "threatens the stability of the democracy, because people won't support a government that is widely viewed as corrupt through and through," Ambassador Lawrence Benedict, anti-corruption coordinator at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, said in an interview this week.

"Senior officials in the Iraqi government have characterized corruption as the second insurgency -- that's pretty strong language in a place like this," Benedict said. Barack Obama has launched an all-out effort to block a Republican billionaire’s efforts to tie him to domestic and foreign terrorists in a wave of negative television ads.

Obama’s campaign has written the Department of Justice demanding a criminal investigation of the “American Issues Project,” the vehicle through which Dallas investor Harold Simmons is financing the advertisements. The Obama campaign — and tens of thousands of supporters — also is pressuring television networks and affiliates to reject the ads. The effort has met with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks.

“This is a sad ploy to circumvent the First Amendment by a campaign who has no arguments with the merits of our ad. Poland and other states should be under no illusion they can count on the U.S. in a crisis. In the past we left Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the lurch. More recently we haven't done much to help Georgia.

We have already seen how the tiny Georgian armed forces -- with fewer than 30,000 men -- were routed by the Russian invaders.

According to the CIA's World Factbook, Georgia has over 900,000 men between the ages of 16 and 49. It could easily create a larger military force than it has, but that would require spending more on defense. By the CIA's estimate, its defense budget was just 0.59% of GDP in 2005.

According to the International Institute of Strategic Studies, one country in Eastern Europe spends more than 2% of GDP on defense. Bulgaria at 2.2%. Romania is in second place at 1.9%, followed by Poland at 1.8%.

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

Eastern Europeans are rightly alarmed about the brazenness and success of the Russian blitzkrieg into Georgia. For many living in Russia's shadow, this is reviving traumatic memories -- of 1968 for Czechs, 1956 for Hungarians, 1939 for Poles. It does not help that senior Russian generals are threatening to rain nuclear annihilation on Ukraine and Poland if they refuse to toe the Kremlin's line

Even those states which, unlike Georgia and Ukraine, are already in NATO can take scant comfort. As Poland's foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, says, "Parchments and treaties are all very well, but we have a history in Poland of fighting alone and being left to our own devices by our allies."

Warsaw's response has been to draw closer to the United States, by rapidly concluding an agreement in long drawn-out negotiations over the basing of U.S. interceptor missiles on Polish soil. That's a good start, but it's a move of symbolic import only

Tags: eastern europe, georgia, ukraine, poland, hungary, czech republic, bulgaria, romania, nato, russia

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121962284006967693.html?mod=opinion_main_commentaries</clipSource>

Lou Dobbs: Media 'in the tank supporting the Obma candidacy"

clipped by: n2sooners
clipper's remarks:
HANK SHEINKOPF, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Good for democrats, not so good for the nation in the long term. Barack Obama is interesting, he's new, therefore he is news. OK. The fact that a black man can reach that pinnacle of success, raise the amount of money, run this kind of organization, beat Hillary Clinton is big news. At some point there has to be some fairness in the discussion. The problem here from the beginning is from day Obama showed up, I was wondering when the reporters will start chiseling his face on to Mt. Rushmore and the guy hadn't even won the nomination yet. That's the danger here, Lou. And people know it and they're not stupid. Average guy says wait a second, I want news and he isn't getting it.

Clip Source: newsbusters.org

LOU DOBBS

My colleagues in the national media are absolutely biased, in the tank supporting the Obama candidacy while claiming the mantle of objectivity.

Well, I think the way the national media in this country right is performing, is disgraceful.

"The Washington Post" has put Barack Obama on the front pages of the Washington Post three times as many times as Senator McCain.

"Time" magazine has run seven covers with Obama.
