Somebody took offense again. An art museum in England is exhibiting some controversial statues, and of course some kook can't just stay away, they have to make sure no one else gets to see them.

A Christian group is taking an art centre to court, claiming it displayed an indecent statue of Jesus Christ.

The artwork was part of an exhibition at Gateshead's Baltic Centre featuring several plaster figures with erections, including ET, Mickey Mouse and Jesus.

Lawyers for Christian Emily Mapfuwa, 40, of Essex, are bringing a civil case for outraging public decency.

It seems a little unkind to demand that the poor guy be eternally flaccid, as well as tortured. And look! Fatwah envy!

Mrs Mapfuwa, of Brentwood, said Baltic would not have dared depict Mohammed in such a way.

ARNHEM - Het centrum van Arnhem is zondagmiddag overspoeld door bezoekers van World Statues 2008. De organisatie schat dat 300.000 mensen zijn kwamen kijken naar de levende standbeelden uit de hele wereld.

Gezien de drukte moeten de bezoekers in sommige straten van het ene naar het andere standbeeld schuifelen. Tot grote problemen hebben de drukte en de hitte niet gezorgd. Wel werd op de Markt een vrouw onwel. Zij kon ter plaatse worden behandeld.

Huge Marcus Aurelius statue uncovered in ancient Turkish city of Sagalassos

The head, right arm and lower legs of a huge statue of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius have been uncovered by archaeologists in the ancient city of Sagalassos in Turkey.

The 15-foot statue was originally located in the frigidarium, the coldest and largest room in the Roman baths at Sagalassos

Archaeologists now believe the frigidarium contained a gallery of large imperial statues running around its long walls, offering a treasure trove of antique images.

Marcus Aurelius

ruled from 161AD to 180AD and won fame for his standing as a Stoic philosopher, as well as for his wise governance of the empire.

Sagalassos,

was destroyed by an earthquake between 540AD and 620AD

Professor Marc Waelkens

said Marcus Aurelius' eyes were "in deep contemplation, perfectly fitting an emperor who was more of a philosopher than a soldier."

Prof Waelkens believes the room housed representations of the whole Antonine dynasty

CAIRO (AFP) - Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed four small statues of the Sphinx, the mythological figure of a lion with a human head, the Higher Council of Antiquities said on Friday.

The headless sandstone statues were found on a road linking the ancient temples of Luxor and Karnak in southern Egypt, antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass said in a statement.

They were unearthed in an area once occupied by a police station that was demolished as part of a project to rescue artifacts, Hawass said.

The statues date from the reign of King Nekhtnebef who founded the 30th Pharaonic dynasty (363-380 BC), Hawass added.

The same team of archaeologists also found a sandstone block engraved with the name of Queen Cleopatra.

How would you explain that all these "structures" passed the quality control and house inspections? Only by the possible fact that controllers and inspectors were drunk too. Or just near-sighted. I really want to believe the latter, but in some countries they are actually neither drunk or blind - but handsomely bribed. See for yourself:

Do you guys have any short term memory? Do you have anything? You just said, yeah let’s be clear about it, you can’t just overthrow a government, occupy a capital, knock over their statues, stack their prisoners, refer to the, refer to the horrific level of civilian casualties as birth pangs of democracy. Of course obviously this situation isn’t just the dangerous escalation of once mordent cold war hostilities. Texas executed convicted murderer Jose Medellin this evening after a three hour delay while the Supreme Court reconsidered his case. The court voted 5-4, usual suspects, to allow the execution to proceed (PDF). Justice Stevens switched from his agreement with Chief Justice Roberts, and Justices Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy, and Alito in Medellin v. Texas (PDF), which was decided just five months ago.

Medellin's case took on international significance after the World Court (to which the U.S. is a party) ruled that his execution should not proceed. Medellin, a Mexican national, was properly convicted under the statues of Texas and in compliance with the Texas Constitution and the U.S. Constitution. However, he was not afforded the proper procedural protections under various treaties the U.S. has signed and ratified. The Supreme Court's March decision held that those treaties were not self-executing and could not be applied to the State of Texas absent some federal enabling legislation

Dozens blinded in India looking for Virgin Mary in the sun

At least 50 people have lost their sight after staring at the sun hoping to see an image of the Virgin Mary, according to reports.

Alarmed health authorities in India's Kottayam district have set up a sign dispelling rumours of a miraculous image in the sky and warning of the dangers of looking into direct sunlight.

Forty-eight cases of sight-loss, allegedly caused by photochemical burns on the retina, have been recorded at St Joseph's ENT and Eye hospital in the region since Friday.

Despite warnings, and the potentially harmful effects of their actions, believers are allegedly still flocking to a hotelier's house in Erumeli near where the divine image is said to have appeared.

The hotelier, who has since moved, had claimed that statues of the Virgin Mary in his house have been crying honey and bleeding oils and perfumes.

Statues lose home

Treasures in Muskingum County will be going to highest bidders

Down a lonely gravel road in the northwestern corner of Muskingum County, one man's legacy perches forgotten on a remote hilltop.

From the 1920s through the 1940s, the 62-acre Baughman Memorial Park was a destination for families from across the state who flocked to see its larger-than-life stone sculptures of former presidents and generals.

Now, this patch of Ohio history is for sale.

The park is the boyhood home of Daniel Brice Baughman, whose father, Noah, bought the land as a stone quarry. Daniel Baughman died in 1957, but not before covering the hillside with giant stone tributes to American leaders.

The park, which was dedicated by the state in 1931, will go on the auction block at noon Saturday. The auction is being conducted by Kiko Auctioneers of Canton and will include property, oil and gas rights and a modern log home.

The statues will be sold separately, a move that upsets some locals and historians.

In Pontremoli, the old medieval district of Piagnaro winds up the hill. At the top is the Piagnaro castle, which houses an entire population of stone people waiting to reveal to you - pilgrims of the 21^st century - the mysteries of society 5000 years ago. These statues are called the Stele, human images carved by the first inhabitants of Lunigiana on stone from the Apuane Alps. They are thought to represent the benevolent spirits which protected families and villages, or socially important people, and give us a fascinating insight into Neolithic art.

Thieves posed as firemen

Scrap metal thieves made off with five tonnes of metal from a steel plant after posing as firemen.

The crooks had turned up at the Mittal Steel plant outside Galati in Eastern Romania in a fire engine saying they had been told a blaze had broken out.

But while some of the gang checked for signs of a fire the rest loaded the truck with steel worth £15,000 on the scrap metal black market.

They were foiled when police stopped their fire engine after reports that it had been stolen from the local fire brigade.

Soaring metal prices - caused by demand in China and India - have led to a huge outbreak of scrap thefts all over Europe.

In Britain this week police launched a blitz on the crooks who get rich from stealing lead from church roofs, railway tracks and cables and even bronze statues.
