In the digital age, anyone with a laptop, a wi-fi card, and a place to sit at Starbucks can put material into cyberspace. The digital revolution means everyone's an author, every day is National Writing Day. And this sudden democratizing of the writing process generates its own set of complaints:

* it's wrong to give so many people access to authorship -- after all, most people won't be very good at, and some people are going to write things that we don't agree with

* computers make writing too easy -- something so important should only come with effort -- no pain, no gain -- maybe we should increase the entrance fees?

* we need to control, license, censor what's on the 'net: after all, the web is full of lies, misinformation, nonsense, pornography, fraud, Nigerian money scams, and hate, not to mention all those pictures of little cats

But despite the complaints, writers everywhere are grabbing their keyboards...

Clip Source: illinois.edu

It's National Writing Day: I wrote today, did you?

Senate Resolution 310 proclaims today, Oct. 20, as the National Day on Writing.

With everybody except a few conservatives celebrating writing, it might surprise us to look back and see that people once thought writing was actually a bad thing

Socrates also objected to writing because it wasn't interactive -- this was long before instant messaging -- and because the written word gave only a distant and incomplete picture of the reality to which it referred. Writing, Socrates complained, can't answer questions the way a real live human being can. If you ask a piece of paper something, all it can do is repeat the same words over and over. Writing, Socrates told his companion Phaedrus, is like a broken record.

And it's not just writing. Every time a new communication technology comes along, critics complain about it.

And the typewriter? Even worse -- it not only increased the distance between the author, the written word, and the reader,

<clipSource>https://illinois.edu/db/view/25/13953</clipSource>

Facts about famous brands

clipped by: Stumblerz

Clip Source: www.stumblerz.com

Facts about Companies

Here are some tidbits about some of the most famous companies around the world, on how come they got started and how they got their name etc.

-AltaVista means high view in Spanish.

-Fanta was made by Max Keith in Germany as a replacement for the American Coca Cola during the world war II. Rapists don’t survive the Holocaust. Rapists don’t sit in the cubicle across from us at work, and send us funny xkcd cartoons. Rapists don’t have uneventful, long-term relationships with their college girlfriends. Rapists don’t show up on set every day, directing a critically-acclaimed movie. Rapists don’t get married, nervous in a tux at the end of the aisle. Rapists don’t spend their weekends browsing at the farmer’s market, and then stop for brunch and do the NYT crossword. Rapists don’t co-write this screenplay with us. Rapists don’t hang out at the pub with their friends, watching football and drinking just half a pint of beer, because they’re driving.…

We tell these myths to ourselves and each other often, but of course, they are lies. A rapist is nothing but a man who doesn’t listen when you say stop.

Clip Source: poptext.wordpress.com

The international film-making community is rallying to Polanski’s cause

all pledging support to this man who – to state the obvious – admitted raping a child.

I should be surprised, or outraged, but I can’t be; because they’re just doing what everyone does, which is desperately perpetuating the myth that Rapists Are Not One Of Us.

While society seems to be able to process the idea that we could all conceivably be murderers, given the right mix of anger, hatred, desperation, or otherwise pressured circumstances, we can’t bring ourselves to admit the wide range of men who have, will, would, or could rape. Rape, the myth goes, is something Other. It is separate, and dramatic, and above all, perpetuated by men we don’t know.

Rapists are not loving fathers, or supportive brothers, we tell ourselves – and each other.

Rapists don’t go home for the holidays and help with the tree, and watch the big game with their father, and throw the football around with their nephews.

Tags: rape, justice, culture, rape-apologists, rape-culture, roman-polanski

<clipSource>http://poptext.wordpress.com/2009/10/01/polanski-rape-and-the-myth-of-not-like-us/</clipSource>

New Starbucks VIA Challenge

clipped by: ronhuxley
clipper's remarks: Have you tried the new microcrystal "instant" coffee by Starbucks. I was doubtful about how normal it would taste - I hate the taste of regular instant coffee. Starbucks is offering a challenge to see if you can really tell the difference. I love this new VIA by Starbucks. I have to say that I can tell a bit of difference but it isn't a bad taste difference. Starbucks and its latte-frothing emulators have helped to kill off community
life, according to an academic who conducted a study of the world’s biggest
 coffee chain.

Small and widely spaced tables, free wireless internet access and a preference
for take-away customers are among the conversation-killing factors that have
encouraged patrons to cut themselves off, Bryant Simon claimed.

Many branches had community message boards and – borrowing from sociology –
the company marketed itself as a “third place” between work and home. But
Prof Simon, an academic at Temple University in Philadelphia, said the
 communal feel was an “illusion”.

“People immediately create their own little private, gated communities. You
come in, set up your laptop and put on your headphones,” he said yesterday.
“You couldn’t be more alone in public if you wanted to be.”

The next step is to serve an ad for a steaming cup of java on a mobile Web page just as the cell-phone Web surfer is passing a Starbucks (SBUX ). Within five years, online ad networks such as TACODA and Specific Media Inc. plan to apply behavioral techniques"using surfing data"to target ads to broadband-enabled digital television. It's not hard to imagine the day when multiple TVs tuned to the same channel in the same household will serve up different ads. "There is no question behavioral targeting will be a major component of television," says Dave Morgan, TACODA's founder and chairman.

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_17/b4031097.htm?campaign_id=rss_topStories

Clip Source: www.businessweek.com

Stay tuned for a message from your cell phone, which seems to know an awful lot about you

Advertising is about to get very personal. Marketers are taking tools that they already use to track your Internet surfing and are preparing to combine that information with cell-phone customer data that include not just the area where you live but also the street you're standing on. The aim is to target the exact person who is most likely to buy a product at the precise moment they're most likely to buy it. It's the ad industry's dream come true: a perfect personalized pitch. For privacy advocates, though, this combination of behavioral and geographic targeting is an Orwellian nightmare.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Campaigns that combine Web data with location information to target ads from nearby businesses to individuals are just a couple of years away, mobile marketers say.

Tags: cell-phone information, marketing logistics, technology

<clipSource>http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_17/b4031097.htm?campaign_id=rss_topStories</clipSource>

Starbucks coffee

clipped by: ann8374

Clip Source: apps.facebook.com

<clipSource>http://apps.facebook.com/bumpersticker/recently_popular_stickers/list/2</clipSource>
