Half of US kids will get food stamps, study says

CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say.

Food stamps are a Department of Agriculture program for low-income individuals and families, covering most foods although not prepared hot foods or alcohol. For a family of four to be eligible, their annual take-home pay can't exceed about $22,000.

According to a USDA report released last month, 28.4 million Americans received food stamps in an average month in 2008, and about half were younger than age 18. The average monthly benefit per household totaled $222.

Overall, about 49 percent of all children were on food stamps at some point by the age of 20, the analysis found. That includes 90 percent of black children and 37 percent of whites. The analysis didn't include other ethnic groups.

and this one i copied again from someone on the board. hers was made with the aspen paper and she made a boy card and i think it may have been a 4 x 8 card but not sure. i loved the look of it and tried it with the eversong creative basics paper from last year. my card is a 6 x 4 2/16. stamps not ours.

Her mother, Loretta, 45, heard April screaming and crying after the incident and found her sitting on the kerb sobbing.

She said: 'It is unbelievable. How could someone do something like that?'

Grandmother Norma Peachey, 72, from Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, added: 'It is despicable. Sandy was such a little dear - so tiny she could have fitted in a coffee cup.'

A teenage girl looked on in horror as a sick yob killed her ten-week-old puppy by stamping on its head, it was revealed today.

April Alderton, 15, was carrying her Jack Russell Sandy through Priory Park in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, when she put the dog down on the ground for a few seconds.

Tiny Sandy then wandered over to a group of three teenage boys wearing dark jeans and hooded tops - when one of them lashed out and stamped on her head.

Horrified April tried to give Sandy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation at the scene before taking her to a nearby vets, but the puppy died from a fractured skull.

April was given Sandy just four weeks ago to help her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The teenager today spoke of her grief at the puppy's brutal death at the hands of the thug, on Monday morning.

Baguio Country Club

In the year 1900 the U.S. Secretary of State Elihu Root ordered the 2nd Philippine Commission "Do not forget to look for that cold place!" The Commission by then had heard of this fabled "paradise" from the Spaniards who were leaving after the Philippines had been purchased from Spain. The cold place was "Kafagway" inhabited by 30 Igorots, 10 llocanos and a white man-a German named Otto Sheerer.

The Americans were in search of a place of relief from the tropical heat that had become unbearable to the white man. Once chartered into a city, this colonial hill station became "Baguio", a haven of hills and dales, virgin forests, brooks and glen, and that much coveted cool place for rest and recreation.

Baguio Country Club after a hundred years remains a bastion of cordiality if not brotherly love. The story of Baguio Country Club is the history of Baguio herself.

Manila Central University

The Manila Central University had very humble beginnings. In 1903, at the request of several students from the University of Sto. Tomas and other individuals, Dr. Alejandro Albert organized a private review class. This review class developed into the Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila in 1904, with Dr. Albert as director, a post he held until 1915 when the Liceo was transformed into the Manila College of Pharmacy with Messrs. Albert, Alfredo L. Guerrero, Antonio C. Llamas, Feliciano Paterno and Filemon Tanchoco, all faculty members of the institution as incorporators.

In 1948, it became the Manila Central University (MCU) after having opened the College of Nursing and Graduate School and more than sufficiently meeting the requirements for a university. In 1949, the MCU inaugurated its 10-hectare campus in Caloocan City.

Philippine Se Jo Tong Lim Family Association

Se Jo Lim Family Association is an informal association founded in 1908 by elder clansmen led by Lim Kong Chin, Mariano Lim and others to promote unity and foster friendship among clansmen. It was formally inaugurated on the birthday of their ancestor Pi Kan, the 25th day of October in the Chinese Lunar calendar in 1908. The Association adopted the name Se Jo Tong to illustrate brotherhood with other organizations that existed in Manila at the time.

The association has diligently performed its avowed duties of helping unfortunate clansmen, assisting during sickness, fostering friendship among their members and clansmen, promoting cordial relationship between fellow organizations and working for harmony and improvement of the Philippine society.

Centennial of the University of the Philippines

1. The UP Official Seal - the bird depicted in the logo of the University of the Philippines is an eagle. Its widespread wings symbolize the vision of the university to be a center of academic freedom. It also represents the UP students who are trained to offer their lives in the service of the Filipino people.

2. The UP Carillon- more than half a century ago, in 1952, the UP Alumni Association, headed by then President Hermenegildo R. Reyes, gifted the university with 46 carillon bells housed in a 130 feet tower designed by National Artist Juan Nakpil, known then as the Memorial Campanile.

3. The Oblation was made by Professor Guillermo E. Tolentino with the help of his student apprentice, Anastacio T. Caedo. Caedo served as the model for the sculpture.

clipper's remarks: The Go Families continued to grow and spread through out the country so that by 1948, after World War II. the first Liong Tek Go Family Association provincial chapter was established in Leyte, Samar. Two years later, in 1950 another chapter was established in Cebu. In 1958, the Liong Tek Go Family Association celebrated their 50th Golden Anniversary.

The Go Families' ancestors, starting from Tai Bei Kong took the first step to migrate sometime from 618 AD in the Tang Dynasty, continuing through 1368 A.D. in the Ming Dynasty and up to 1644 during the Ching Dynasty.

Some eventually found their way to the Philippines where they settled, established their businesses, got married, raised and educated their children. By 1908, the Go families in the Philippines had grown substantially that it was increasingly becoming difficult to keep track of who belonged to which family and how each were related. It was then, 100 years ago that the Go Family in the Philippines decided to establish the Liong Tek Go Family Association, initially as a social club, to keep the families in touch with each other.
