An alarming trend that we’ve noticed at the Militant Geek HQ is the sloppy usage of the terms ‘geek’, ‘nerd’, and ‘dork’. It was almost as if certain individuals assumed that they meant the same thing! For the record Geeks are those that have technical aptitude, nerds are bright but socially awkward, and dorks are just inept excuses for protoplasm. Top 30 Firefox themes

Don’t particularly like the default theme on Firefox? One good thing about Mozilla’s browser is that you can install a new one, choosing from hundreds with different, original styles. From your top menu bar, just select Tools>Add-ons. When the window pops up select the ‘Themes’ tab and press the ‘get themes’ link at the bottom right of the window. You’ll be taken to a Mozilla page which lists up loads of different themes, organized by category, from retro to animals, sport, modern or more. On Softonic, we’ve selected a few that we particularly like, including the Vista-aero theme, Mostly Crystal and Doodle Plastik.

If you aren’t convinced by these, we suggest taking a look at Mashable’s list of 30 Firefox themes.

I quite like FOXSCAPE, with its Netscape-like interface, iFox Smooth, with its Safari for Mac feel, or Ubuntu Human theme, great for Linux fans.

The man who lives with bears

IT looks like a circus performance as the man reaches up to cuddle an 8ft-tall grizzly bear.

But amazingly, this is NOT a trained animal but a wild beast that could kill daredevil Charlie Vandergaw with a single swipe of its huge paw.

The retired schoolteacher risks his life every day to befriend grizzly and black bears.

Despite such cautionary tales, Charlie, 68, is convinced the bears — which weigh up to 500lbs when fully grown — are his friends.

He says: “They’re such big, powerful creatures. They could break my neck with one slap.

“If they wanted to attack me, I wouldn’t stand a chance. But they don’t want to.

“Just to see someone get that close to the grizzlies seems insane, but it’s like taking something out of context.

“You have to see the whole thing — you have to understand the number of years of experience I have. I think you can prevent an attack situation just by being observant.

“Saying all of that, I could get chewed on tomorrow.”

A Dutch professor, JohanHuizinga, in the 'Thirties commented that humans might better have been called Homo Ludens than Homo Sapien. Homo Sapien means thinking man. while Homo Lundens names our species playful man.

Almost all of you have gotten "high." You might call it "getting stoned" or "tripping" or "having a session" or "going on vision quest" or "partying" but the urge to switch channels and move to another and less usual state of consciousness is as old as our species itself. Actually the quest for intoxication is even older!

Siegel proposes that after food, drink and sex, "Intoxication is the fourth drive." He demonstrates through zoological and sociological evidence, that the urge to get high is among the most basic of motivations.

Human beings it seems, are born with the need for periodic variations in consciousness.

The attractiveness of drugs is that they provide an easy quick route to these experiences.

Gamers have devoted countless years of collective brainpower to rescuing princesses or protecting the planet against alien invasions. This week researchers at the University of Washington will try to harness those finely honed skills to make medical discoveries, perhaps even finding a cure for HIV.

A new game, named Foldit, turns protein folding into a competitive sport. Introductory levels teach the rules, which are the same laws of physics by which protein strands curl and twist into three-dimensional shapes -- key for biological mysteries ranging from Alzheimer's to vaccines.

After about 20 minutes of training, people feel like they're playing a video game but are actually mouse-clicking in the name of medical science. The free program is at http://fold.it/.

High-scoring players will be credited in scientific publications the way that top Rosetta@home contributors already are credited for their computer time.

RANGOON: The Burmese army has burnt an undetermined number of bodies at a crematorium sealed off by armed guards northeast of Rangoon over the past week, ensuring the exact death toll in the recent pro-democracy protests will never be known.

The secret cremations have been reported by local people who have seen olive-green trucks covered with tarpaulins rumbling through the area at night and watched smoke rising continuously from the furnace chimneys.

They say they have watched soldiers in steel helmets blocking off roads to the municipal crematorium and threatening people who poke their heads out of windows overlooking the roads after the 10pm curfew.

"We have first-hand evidence from respected Burmese doctors that hospitals and clinics were ordered not to give any treatment to the wounded," said a foreign medical expert, "so it's not possible to assess the victims by those treated in public hospitals.

The Online Journalism Review reports on Jakob Nielsen's use of an eye-tracker to look at how different people read the Web -- particularly news. There are lots of interesting findings, but the best is the revelation that men fixate on any visible genital areas in photos -- even animals' crotches come in for a good eyeballing.

Although both men and women look at the image of George Brett when directed to find out information about his sport and position, men tend to focus on private anatomy as well as the face. For the women, the face is the only place they viewed.

This image of George Brett was part of a larger page with his biographical information. All users tested looked the image, but there was a distinct difference in focus between men and women.

Coyne adds that this difference doesn’t just occur with images of people. Men tend to fixate more on areas of private anatomy on animals as well, as evidenced when users were directed to browse the American Kennel Club site.

It could have been a happy scene from a family zoo anywhere in the world but for what happened next.

A man hoisted up the goat and nonchalantly threw it over a wall into a pit full of hungry lions. The poor goat tried to run for its life, but it didn't stand a chance. The lions quickly surrounded it and started tearing at its flesh.

The scenes witnessed at Badaltearing Safari Park in China are rapidly becoming a normal day out for many Chinese families.

Baying crowds now gather in zoos across the country to watch animals being torn to pieces by lions and tigers.

Just an hour's drive from the main Olympic attractions in Beijing, Badaling is in many ways a typical Chinese zoo.

Next to the main slaughter arena is a restaurant where families can dine on braised dog while watching cows and goats being disembowelled by lions.

The zoo also encourages visitors to "fish" for lions using live chickens as bait.

"In China, if you love animals you want to kill yourself every day out of despair."

By the time they arrive in Beijing, most athletes have resigned themselves to the possibility of undergoing a battery of tests for banned substances, like anabolic steroids and certain cough medicines.

But some female athletes may find they are asked to submit to an entirely different examination — one that will test whether they are, in fact, women.

Some medical ethicists have said the practice is too intrusive. “Real people are going to be hurt by this,” said Alice Dreger, an associate professor in medical humanities and bioethics at Northwestern University.

“Real Olympic athletes who have spent their whole life waiting for this moment.”

At first, women were asked to parade nude before a panel of doctors to verify their sex. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, officials switched to a chromosomal test.
