The year was 1977, the magazine Better Homes And Gardens. And because we were too busy working to find the time to water the plants, we'd be better off making plush, as in stuffed, plants.

The examples here were made of corduroy. Which means when you'd dust them, you'd get that 'woosh-woosh' sound. And dust them you must because they are going to be pet hair magnets. But of course, if you can't keep a plant alive I don't suppose you have any pets... Don't worry, there are patterns for stuffed animals in lots of places.

Computer geeks do so love using weird and oddly poetic buzz words to describe new trends. From these formidable minds, we mere mortals were handed such gems as “phishing”, “blog”, “spam”, “digg” and “cookies”. Yes, cookies.

Here’s another one that you’ve probably heard being mentioned in your travels on the internet: cloud computing.

It does sound a bit up in the air, so I’m going to try and describe it in as simple a way as I can.

At its most basic level, cloud computing is an internet-based service that you can use - without having to understand the technology behind it - to satisfy whatever computer need you may have.

In other words, its using software available “in the clouds” of the internet, so to speak.

You do whatever you want done via the internet, with software installed on a “virtual” computer.

Those interested in outdoor recreational pursuits will find Valdez, Alaska a destination for all seasons. This community is located on the northern shore of Port Valdez in northeastern Prince William Sound and backs against the rugged coastal Chugash Mountains. Port Valdez is the closest saltwater accessible by residents of interior Alaska living along the Richardson Highway running from Copper Center towards Fairbanks.

Tolling for Silver salmon in Port Valdez during late August is one of the best fishing experiences found in Alaska. This is a terminal fishery supported by the Valdez Fisheries Development Association (VFDA), a private non-profit fish hatchery based in the community. Once this annual run of Silvers is in Port, the fishing is fast, furious and exciting. Silver salmon are remarkable fighters, making aerobatic twists in the air and threatening to break free at any moment. The Silvers are plentiful in most years and a typical bag limit is six fish per day.

The econobox, however, left everyone colder than a January day in Nome.

Experienced Zen meditators can clear their minds of distractions more quickly than novices, according to a new brain imaging study.

After being interrupted by a word-recognition task, experienced meditators' brains returned faster to their pre-interruption condition, researchers at Emory University School of Medicine found.

Giuseppe Pagnoni, PhD, Emory assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and co-workers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine changes in blood flow in the brain when people meditating were interrupted by stimuli designed to mimic the appearance of spontaneous thoughts.

The study compared 12 people from the Atlanta area with more than three years of daily practice in Zen meditation with 12 others who had never practiced meditation.

"This suggests that the regular practice of meditation may enhance the capacity to limit the influence of distracting thoughts.

So, why haven’t the media picked up on it?

Here’s the deal. Researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada found a cheap and easy to produce drug that kills almost all cancers. The drug is dichloroacetate, and since it is already used to treat metabolic disorders, we know it should be no problem to use it for other purposes.

Doesn’t this sound like the kind of news you see on the front page of every paper?

The drug also has no patent, which means it could be produced for bargain basement prices in comparison to what drug companies research and develop.

Scientists tested DCA on human cells cultured outside the body where it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells, but left healthy cells alone. Rats plump with tumors shrank when they were fed water supplemented with DCA.
