No animals inspire more fascination and frissons, but scientists admit to knowing precious little about how the endangered Great Whites get around and get it on as they navigate the globe's oceans.

Like other open water sharks prized for their meat -- and, in Asia, especially for their fins -- the magnificent hunting machines are threatened with extinction, according to experts.

The new study identifies a distinct population and a major new genetic grouping of the Great White in the eastern Pacific, only the third such "clade" ever found.

The other two concentrations of Carcharodon carcharias are off the coast of South Africa, and in the waters between Australia and New Zealand.

Shark movie scares tourism chiefs

A shark's tale:Underbelly stars Gyton Grantley and Damian Walshe-Howling will feature in a new movie about a killer great white on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Reef, a $3.5 million movie which was filmed at Bowen and Hervey Bay, is due for release in Australia next year.

It follows a turbulent year for Reef tour operators, who have been struggling to keep afloat during a tourism downturn.

The film, which is based on a true story, tells the story of four friends who are forced to swim to a nearby island after their yacht capsizes on the Great Barrier Reef.

The group is stalked by a killer great white shark.

The film is being supported by the State Government.

Mr McKenzie said previous movies, such as Open Water, which depicted the story of a couple stranded on the Reef terrorised by sharks after being left behind by their diving boat, had hurt the industry.

Rugby World Cup winner Ben Cohen has shown off his blistering pace - by beating a wolf in a race at Wembley.

The unusual event took place to promote a brand of footwear, under the banner "fast or food?".

Fortunately for Cohen, his lupine opponent - a Canadian timber wolf by the name of Monty - was in a cage, so there was little danger of him ending up as lunch.

Cohen admitted: "It's probably the most surreal thing I've ever done, but I'm always up or a new challenge so I gave it a go. The looks we got from the crowds were very bizarre."

The 31-year-old, who plays for Sale Sharks, is hoping to regain his place in the England team, having not represented his country since 2006.

He's obviously still got the pace for it - even if eyewitness reports suggest that Monty was slightly less committed to the cause than most of Ben's rugby opponents.

In addition to their sight and smell, Great whites, like all other sharks, have an extra sense given by the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which enables them to detect the electromagnetic field emitted by the movement of living animals. Every time a living creature moves it generates an electrical field and great whites are so sensitive they can detect half a billionth of a volt. This is equivalent to detecting a flashlight battery from 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) away. Thus, while a great white's sense of sight is useful, the shark does not depend on it. A shark primarily uses its extra senses (i.e, electrosense and mechanosense) to locate prey from far off. Then, the shark uses smell and hearing to further verify that its target is food. At close range, the shark utilizes sight for the attack.

The Great White Shark mainly uses it's senses like electrosense and mechanosense to detect the prey from a distance. Then the shark uses it's smell and hearing senses to confirm the food. When it reaches a close distance, it uses sight to attack. They have a reputation as ferocious predators.They mostly hunt in a surprise way and attack the prey from below. White Sharks mostly hunt in the morning within two hours of sunrise and the reason for this is given as the sharks are hard to see from below at this time.

Sharks have highly evolved and complex brains. The sensory part of the brain is especially well developed giving these species great senses of smell and taste that enables them to detect their prey at great distances (>2 miles depending on water conditions) and detect pheromones for mating and locative purposes. Their eyesight, functionally similar to mammals, is also very important at closer distances but dependent on water clarity.

All of us who have struggled with credit card debt and job losses know the frustrations of climbing a greased pole. The banks have been putting the screws to us for a long time. As a child, I would hear adults talking about LOAN SHARKS. On TV there were stories of bones being broken for non-payment by such LOAN SHARKS who charged exorbitant interest fees. I was glad to find out, this technique was illegal and US banks could never resort to such tactics to coerce payment. In adulthood, I learned quickly, that there were legal procedures of torture, no physical bone breaking but just as vexing. In Capitalism, the torture is mental and longer lasting. Today’s banks use teaser loans to lure us, once we’re captured by their come-ons they pounce and raise the APR's so high, that there is no escape from debt. I salute this lady who didn't take it lying down! She threw a few punches back!
