I Dream About Sarah Palin. Do You?

Night after night, she appears in my dreams, always as a scolding, ominous figure.

One Obama-supporting colleague dreamed she had urged her young son to kill Palin with a string bean. Another dreamed she was at a fashion show and Palin served her crème fraîche on little scooped corn chips.

I suspect we are not unusual. Palin has gripped the American imagination in a way that seems designed to burrow into our dream lives. Palin's supermom abilities provoke envy and anxiety in women, especially other working mothers. Her instant celebrity and dazzling speech have panicked Obama supporters who thought they had the election in the bag. And then there's her sex appeal. A couple of conservative men I know have mentioned that they've been having sexual fantasies about the Alaska governor. I'm sure they're not alone.

A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment's employees.

Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.

'I was dumfounded. I thought I was dreaming,' the husband told the newspaper on Wednesday.

The couple, married for 14 years, are now divorcing, the newspaper reported.

It's a great premise, and Gordon explores it thoughtfully. At the start of the book Monica gives a talk at a friend's gallery. Mid-talk, she takes an unplanned detour. This quote gives a sense of her ironic voice:

And he stood up, just there, in front of everyone, and said, "Right here."

The man who volunteers is a cipher known only as "B". His life apart from Monica is vague. His explicit purpose is to be her foil, her support, her lover, her inspiration, her concierge; he's extraordinarily perfect in the role. (Remember, this is Utopia.)

Do men or women dream more about sex?

Both men and women dream about sex in equal measure, according to the findings of a Canadian study.

About 8 per cent of everyday dream reports from both genders contain some form of sexual-related activity,

The most common type of sexual dream content was sexual intercourse, followed by sexual propositions, kissing, fantasies and masturbation.

Both men and women reported experiencing an orgasm in about 4 per cent of their sexual dreams.

Women reported that orgasms were experienced by other people who figured in their dreams, in about 4 per cent of their dreams.

In contrast, men did not report other characters experiencing orgasms in their dreams.

Current or past partners were identified in 20 per cent of women's sexual dreams, compared to 14 per cent for men.

Public figures such as movie stars and politicians were twice as likely to be the object of women's sexual dreams, while men were twice as likely to report dreaming of multiple sex partners.

It might sound like an affair, but what if your "cheating" partner was fast asleep during the act?

This is a condition completely distinct from sleepwalking and is a form of sleep disorder called REM behavioural disorder.

Normally, when a person enters a phase of sleep called the REM (rapid eye movement) phase, in which we can often dream, our bodies are immobilised.

In the case of sleep sex, this doesn't happen and the person can act out their dreams.

He said if what the person was acting out fitted with the dream they might not wake up.

"If you are lying there dreaming about having sex with your wife and you just happen to be having sex with your wife then there's nothing there to stop the dream. You don't perceive that as wrong."

THE STAGES OF SLEEP

Stage 5 - REM sleep, when people can sex sleep

He said people would not necessarily remember what they had done while they were dreaming.

"You only remember your dreams if you wake up during them.

"But even then, it can be very difficult to comprehend that you have done what you dreamed about."

He said finding out what was the trigger of the REM behavioural disorder and eliminating it could help.

Other treatments include medications to induce sleep or reduce muscle tone.

Mr Buchanan said almost half of all sleep sex cases were associated with psychological problems and, in the case of the woman he described, psychotherapy helped.
